SAN DIEGO (CNS) - SANDAG and Caltrans opened a southbound Interstate 5 auxiliary lane in the University City area.The new exit-only lane allows motorists to enter the freeway from Genesee Avenue and continue directly to the La Jolla Village Drive off-ramp without having to merge with freeway traffic.The approximately half-mile auxiliary lane is intended to improve traffic flow, reduce travel delays and increase overall safety in the area. Prior to its completion, the heavily trafficked southbound I-5 off-ramp to La Jolla Village Drive often caused congestion on the freeway, posing a safety risk to motorists.Construction for the I-5/Genesee Avenue Auxiliary Lane project began in July 2019 and required careful work alongside freeway traffic. The million project was made possible by the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017, which increased the state gas tax to fund state transportation projects.The auxiliary lane was constructed concurrently with the Mid-Coast Trolley project, which will extend Blue Line Trolley service from Downtown San Diego north to the University community when it opens for service in late 2021.The auxiliary lane runs beneath the Voigt Drive Trolley bridge, one of two locations where the future trolley will travel over I-5. 1278

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County students' performance on standardized tests in English and math mostly held steady from the previous year, according to scores released Wednesday by the California Department of Education.The performance of San Diego County students on the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress tests generally surpassed that of students statewide, according to the department. The CAASPP tests were administered in the spring to more than 3 million students across the state in grades 3-8 and 11. In San Diego County, 26.45% of the more than 250,000 students who took the tests exceeded the state standard in English, up slightly from 25.79 percent the previous year. According to the state, 30.1% met the standard, down slightly from 30.46% last year; 20.89% ``nearly'' met the standard, down slightly from 20.93% last year; and 22.55% failed to meet it, down from 22.82% the previous year. In math, 23.45% exceeded the standard, 21.6% met it, 24.84% nearly met it and 30.12% failed to meet it. The percentages from the previous year were 22.52%, 21.76%, 25.37% and 30.36%, respectively. Statewide, 22.23% exceeded the standard in English, while 28.64% met it, 22.4% nearly met it and 26.73% failed to meet it. In math, 19.69% exceeded the standard, 20.04% met it, 25.41% nearly met it and 34.86% failed to meet it. The statewide scores were all also moderately improved from the previous year. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County health officials have reported 558 new COVID-19 cases and no new deaths, raising the region's totals to 19,929 cases and the death count remaining at 422.Of the 8,505 tests reported Saturday, 7% were positive new cases. The 14-day rolling average for positive tests is 6.1%. The target is less than 8%. The 7-day daily average of tests is 7,853.Of the total positive cases, 2,036 or 10.2% have been hospitalized and 535 or 2.7% of cases have been admitted to an intensive care unit.Two new community outbreaks, one in a healthcare setting and the other in a restaurant-bar, were reported Saturday, bringing the total over the past week to 18, more than double the trigger of seven or more in seven days. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego City Attorney Mara Elliott announced today that the city will use a 5,850 grant to fund a team of specialized prosecutors to handle cases involving drug-impaired drivers.The City Attorney's Office will use the renewed Drug DUI Prosecution Grant to handle cases of both drug-impaired and drug/alcohol-impaired driving, from arrest through conviction and sentencing. The state Office of Traffic Safety administers the grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration."Driving under the influence of drugs can have devastating effects on San Diego drivers and their families," Elliott said. "Our city continues to see DUI cases involving the misuse of prescription drugs, marijuana and illegal drugs, often in combination with alcohol. This grant allows our highly specialized prosecution team to work closely with law enforcement to hold accountable those who endanger our community."Specialized prosecutors working under the previous grant from Oct. 1, 2017, to Sept. 30 of this year filed 228 misdemeanor cases of drug-impaired and drug/alcohol-impaired driving while the City Attorney's Office filed a total of 3,110 impaired driving cases during that time. Every seven years, NIH competitively renews its funding of the HIV clinical trials networks operating in the United States and internationally.During the current application process, the UC San Diego AntiViral Research Center, University of Colorado Hospital, Houston AIDS Research Team and Durban International clinical research sites were chosen to work collaboratively on research priorities for the NIH/National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases HIV/AIDS Adult Therapeutics Clinical Trials Network.The Chennai Antiviral Research and Treatment Center, University of Southern California and University of Miami clinical research sites were also chosen to join UCSD to serve as qualified reserve or protocol-specific sites as needed for future clinical trials."UC San Diego has helped shape HIV/AIDS research and treatment through innovative research since the inception of the adult and pediatric therapeutic clinical trials networks in 1986," said principal investigator Dr. Constance A.
