LONDON (AP) — AstraZeneca and Oxford University have acknowledged a manufacturing error that is raising questions about preliminary results of their COVID-19 vaccine.A statement Wednesday describing the error came days after the company and the university described the shots as “highly effective” and made no mention of why some participants didn’t receive as much vaccine as expected. In a surprise, the group of volunteers that got half a dose in the first of their two shots seemed to be better protected than the volunteers who got full doses. The low-dose group was smaller and younger, however, which could have skewed the results, experts say.In a statement obtained by CNN, Oxford elaborated further, saying that a “difference in the manufacturing process” had led to the error. The university said that it discussed the problem with regulators, agreed to complete the late stage trial with two groups, and the problem has since been corrected. 959

LOS ANGELES (AP) — California is suing a nonprofit that sends care packages to combat troops, accusing it of misleading donors about its affiliations, engaging in political activity and paying fees to its directors' for-profit companies. The lawsuit alleges the charity Move America Forward invaded the privacy of injured veterans by using their names and stories to solicit donations without their permission and falsely claimed to have a partnership with the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center."Our troops and their commitment to our country should never be exploited in deceitful solicitation gimmicks, but unfortunately they are," state Attorney General Xavier Becerra said Wednesday. The lawsuit alleges the charity violated IRS rules by providing free office space for the political action committees Move America Forward PAC and Tea Party Express. The charity also is accused of using charitable donations to endorse the political campaigns of former Republican U.S. Rep. Michael Grimm, who ran unsuccessfully for Congress in New York last year after pleading guilty to tax evasion, and Josh Mandel who briefly ran for the Republican nomination for a U.S. Senate seat in Ohio.Becerra said federal rules ban charities from backing political candidates.Move America Forward said the organization has always been completely transparent and provides proof of tax filings and independent audits on its website."Shame on Attorney General Becerra for his unrelenting harassment," Melanie Morgan, chairwoman and co-founder of Move America Forward, said in a statement. "We look forward to our day in court for all the facts to come to light and for our opportunity clear our name so that we can continue with our business of supporting our brave men and women of the military."Becerra said charity directors Salvatore Russo and Shawn Callahan also operated several separate for-profit entities that charged fees for marketing and other services provided to Move America Forward. For example, a Russo-owned entity called The Campaign Store LLC intercepted online donations and charged fees ranging from 7.55% to 10.06% to transfer the remaining funds to the charity's bank account without adding any value to the transaction, the lawsuit says, calling it a vehicle to "skim" off a percentage of donations. The attorney general said the lawsuit seeks to remove Russo and Callahan as directors and ban them from operating charities in California. Becerra said his office will pursue further penalties but that they wouldn't be criminal because it would be hard to prove intent.Senior Assistant Attorney General Tania Ibanez highlighted the number of military or veterans charities that are operating as unregistered or delinquent, meaning they failed to supply their annual reports to the state. An investigation from June 2018 to June 2019 revealed that over 1,000 charities in California have names relating to the military and 554 were found to be delinquent, Ibanez said. Only half have fixed the problem. The office sent cease-and-desist orders to 498 charities that have not registered with the state.Ibanez said veterans are the group most likely to be exploited, followed by firefighters and police officers.Read the full statement below: 3255

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The ShakeAlertLA app that drew criticism for not notifying users during the July 4 and 5 earthquakes will begin sending alerts for smaller quakes, officials announced Wednesday.Starting this month, the early warning system will alert residents of Garcetti, CalTech and the United States Geological Survey. The previous threshold was magnitude 5.0.``Every day we are communicating the importance of preparedness, so that every Angeleno has the tools and resources they need to build a better life, and then protect that life when disaster strikes,'' Garcetti said.``Updates to ShakeAlertLA will result in an even more responsive application, making our city stronger and our families safer.''The USGS ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning System for the West Coast detects significant earthquakes quick enough that ShakeAlerts can reach people a few seconds before shaking starts.``The USGS, through its scientific expertise, creates ShakeAlert earthquake early warnings, but in order to be successful, our public and private partners must develop technologies to use and distribute the alerts,'' said Doug Given, the USGS' earthquake early warning coordinator.ShakeAlertLA was developed in collaboration with USGS, AT&T and The Annenberg Foundation to combine USGS sensor network with mobile app technology, according to the Mayor's Office. It launched at the end of last year. When people receive a ShakeAlert notification, they are advised to take protective action, such as drop, cover and hold on.More information can be found at www.shakealert.org. 1582

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Chris Evans is using his recent exposure to help get out the vote. The actor’s media attention isn’t for a film role though. No, the “Captain America” star literally exposed himself to fans on social media over the weekend. While attempting to post a video on Instagram on Saturday, Evans accidentally posted an untrimmed clip that showed his camera roll and what appeared to be a photo of an erect penis.Evans, who has 6.2 million followers, quickly took the video down, but not before people saved it and the clip spread across the internet, inspiring many memes and jokes.Evans was relatively silent on the matter until Monday, when he seemed to admit to the mistake in a cheeky way.“Now that I have your attention,” he wrote. “VOTE Nov 3rd!!!”Now that I have your attention?????♂??????♂?....VOTE Nov 3rd!!!— Chris Evans (@ChrisEvans) September 15, 2020 Before that, Evans’ brother, Scott, poked fun at his sibling on Twitter.“Was off social media for the day yesterday. So. What’d I miss?” he wrote. Was off social media for the day yesterday.So.What’d I miss?— Scott Evans (@thescottevans) September 13, 2020 All joking aside, the U.S. is 49 days away from its general election, as of Tuesday.
