SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A growing number of apps and online video games are creating new opportunities for hate groups to recruit young people with little oversight, experts say.The information comes about a month after a 19-year-old honors student allegedly shot four people inside a Poway synagogue, killing one person.Dr. Peter Simi, a Chapman University professor who has studied hate groups for more than 20 years, say they are feeling emboldened in a way not seen before. Simi pointed to the charged anti-immigration and anti-Muslim rhetoric that has become mainstream has given the groups new confidence. "We have a long history of these groups that we don't talk nearly enough about because we're in kind of the denial game," Simi said. "The last several years, the white supremacist movement is emboldened in a way that certainly goes beyond anything I've seen in 24 years."RELATED: Shooting at Poway synagogue leaves one dead, three injuredSimi said the groups will use a soft-sell method, drawing people in with subtle white supremacist ideas. They use that introduction as an avenue for further discussion before growing more explicit. The groups, which have posted fliers on San Diego college campuses, are also recruiting young people through apps and video games.For instance, a suspected hate group targeted Ben Hedgspeth's 17-year-old son through a meme app."They were coming from a particular religious background and they were trying to recruit him into their online chat space," he said. "It frustrates me to know that those people are out there approaching our children."Simi said ignoring the groups won't work and schools aren't always doing enough. To start, subscription programs like Circle and Bark can do things like filter content and set limits. Bark will also alert parents to communication such as hate speech, sex acts and depression. But there's one place safeguards still lag: Video games. Bark Chief Parenting Officer Titania Jordan said it's because people communicate verbally - via headset - on popular online games like Fortnite, Roadblocks and Minecraft. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A person is back in ICE custody and in isolation after they were taken to Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center to be evaluated for possible coronavirus symptoms.The individual was in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement when officials determined the person needed to be taken to Sharp Chula Vista, the county said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man died late Saturday night after a home caught fire in Paradise Hills.Fire crews say the fire erupted just after 10 p.m. on Calle Cumbre Street.Neighbors in the area reported hearing a loud boom before flames could be seen bursting from the homeFirefighters say neighbors then began breaking windows in an attempt to get the people trapped inside the home out.The two men inside the home were taken to the hospital where one of them died. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A popular North Park concert venue has agreed to pay ,000 worth of fines and reimburse the City of San Diego ,000 in police investigation costs.The operators of Observatory North Park agreed to pay the penalties after City Attorney Mara Elliott filed a complaint against the venue on July 3. The complaint alleged the venue's operators were maintaining a public nuisance and operating without required permits. The city attorney's office added that the Observatory has become a source of local complaints for, "noise, violence, teenage drinking, public intoxication, public vomiting, and the accumulation of trash, debris, and human waste."“The Observatory has long dragged its heels on correcting violations that would protect the safety of its patrons and North Park community residents,” Elliott said in a release. “Its managers have agreed to begin following the law, and if they don’t, our Office will be there to hold them accountable.”The building also includes West Coast Tavern next door, which shares restrooms and bar areas with the theater.Between January 2015 and May 2019, San Diego Police received 174 calls to the venue, leading to 500 hours of overtime, the office said.The operators of the North Park venue agreed to address criminal activity and nuisance complaints and obtain all required permits. The venue's mezzanine and balcony will also remain closed until building permits and code violations are addressed. If the Observatory fails to comply with the terms of the agreement with the city, another 0,000 in fines will be issued, the office said.The lawsuit is the latest issue in the city's battle with the venue.
