SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities reached out to the public Tuesday for help in identifying a man who robbed a supermarket banking counter in Alpine about four months ago. The thief, who appeared to be in his late 20s or early 30s, approached a teller at the US Bank satellite office in the Albertsons store in the 2900 block of Alpine Boulevard and presented a demand note about 4 p.m. June 4, according to the FBI. After the clerk handed over an undisclosed amount of cash, the robber left the grocery store and fled in a blue Dodge Ram pickup truck. The perpetrator was described as a black-haired, roughly 5-foot-5-inch Latino in blue jeans, a black shirt, tan shoes and a black baseball cap with an ``LA'' logo on the front. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A local meal delivery nonprofit began sales Monday for its 15th annual Mama's Pies Thanksgiving Bake Sale, which raises funds to combat hunger among residents with illnesses like cancer and HIV. During the sale, which runs through Nov. 24, residents can order pumpkin, apple, pecan and Dutch apple pies to be delivered Nov. 27, the day before Thanksgiving. Nearly 20 local bakeries and caterers are expected to bake pies for the annual fundraiser and more pie bakers are needed, according to the organization. ``Our annual bake sale is a time-honored tradition that gives community members from around the region an opportunity to give back to our neighbors in need,'' said Mama's Kitchen Executive Director Alberto Cortes. ``Whether you're purchasing a pie, making a donation or volunteering for pie delivery, every hand up counts.'' SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who ambushed a janitorial worker at a Little Italy coffee shop at knifepoint, tried to sexually assault her and stole her SUV, was sentenced today to 14 years in state prison.Christopher Merron, 28, was also ordered to register as a sex offender for life.The attack occurred around 4:30 a.m. last Oct. 14 as the victim was cleaning the coffee shop in the 1700 block of India Street. Merron pushed the woman into a back room, took her car keys and threatened her with a knife, according to police and prosecutors.Following a struggle, she was able to break free and run out of the building, said San Diego police Lt. Jason Weeden.The assailant fled in the woman's 1998 GMC Jimmy. Merron was arrested in Mission Valley the next day and the victim's SUV was recovered, Weeden said.Merron pleaded guilty in January to assault with intent to commit a sex offense, robbery and sexual battery charges and admitted a knife-use sentencing enhancement allegation. Other charges, including kidnapping with the intent to commit a sex offense, attempted oral copulation, false imprisonment with force and auto theft, were dismissed at sentencing. 1165

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Less than a week after fully reopening its schools, the Vista Unified School District reported a second COVID-19 case involving a Mission Vista High School student, leading to the quarantine of about 150 students and four teachers.According to the district, the second student tested positive for the illness on Sunday. That student attended school Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday last week and is not connected to the other case in a student confirmed last week, the district said."The parents notified us that the student likely contracted the virus while traveling on a club athletic team not affiliated with school," a district statement reads. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities Wednesday publicly identified a Chula Vista city employee found slain in his home near Mount Helix.Chula Vista police personnel conducting a welfare check at the request of a co-worker found the body of 38-year-old Kevin Powell in his residence in the 4400 block of Carmen Drive in Casa De Oro shortly after 1 p.m. Tuesday.Because the neighborhood is in an unincorporated area, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department was called in to take charge of the case, said sheriff's Lt.
