Once they arrived and approached the room, officers say the man inside told them he had a gun and to back away. As they retreated, officers heard two shots fired. SWAT was then called to assist and, after the suspect was barricaded inside the room for several hours, authorities entered and found the man dead. According to police, the man is approximately 30-years-old, but his identity hasn’t yet been released. The motel was evacuated during the incident and nearby streets blocked off. 755

ESCONDIDO (KGTV) -- Escondido police arrested a man with prior criminal convictions Thursday after they found him passed out in his vehicle wearing a ballistic vest and loaded rifle magazines in his front passenger seat. He also had other weapons and police gear he'd allegedly stolen from a law enforcement officer in San Diego, authorities said.According to a release from Escondido Police Department, officers found the man after a caller reported him passed out around 1:10 a.m. outside the 7-Eleven on West Ninth Avenue. The caller said the man was likely under the influence of drugs and did not respond to attempts at waking him. When officers arrived on scene, they recognized the man as 30-year-old Thomas Vann, who has prior criminal convictions. He was wearing a ballistic vest with loaded rifle magazines that were "plainly visible" on the front passenger seat.Officers were able to wake Vann and detain him. They searched his vehicle and found four fully loaded rifle magazines, 126 rounds of rifle and shotgun ammunition, and stolen police gear, including a tactical vest, a duty belt, a medical kit, and handcuffs. Officers determined the police gear was stolen Wednesday from a law enforcement officer in San Diego. They also found 392 grams of methamphetamine and 78 grams of heroin.Vann was arrested and booked into the Vista Detention Facility on numerous drugs, weapons, and stolen property charges. 1426

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - Escondido restaurant owners made the decision to stay open for indoor and outdoor dining after a court ruled Friday evening they must be take out only.On Grand Avenue, it looked like a time warp. People were back under tents and umbrellas eating and drinking on the patio and some indoors. At Tony Pepperoni Pizzeria, the sign in the window blinked "Open.""The restaurant business isn't something you can say hey close, open, close," Tony Pepperony Pizzeria Owner Joe Locricchio said. That's exactly what he's been dealing with for the last 10 months."We have livelihoods on the line... I have single mothers okay, they need to buy diapers. I have guys that haven't had a job and they're walking out of here with money every night in tips." Locricchio said his 80+ employees are like family.Staying open hasn't come without challenges. He said he was criminally cited by Alcoholic Beverage Control and issued a cease-and-desist order by the City of Escondido. His restaurant on Grand Avenue just opened 17 days ago. When asked what he had to say to critics who think he should close and are worried about the coronavirus killing San Diegans, he said, "listen, my heart goes out to everybody that's passed away, one death is too many. To those critics who have something to say about my decision, listen I respect their decision. I respect that they have the choice to not have to come here they don't have to support me, all I ask is to support my decision."He said strangers have yelled and ranted to him about his decision. He said what is more compelling, is how the community has shown their support, "it's been an overwhelming response. It makes my hair stand up, I'm going to be honest with you, the community has been unbelievable."Other restaurants are staying open too and Locricchio encourages more to follow their lead. This while hospitalizations continue to soar and health officials say it's safest to stay home.Locricchio said the choice is yours. He said the criminal citation means he could have his Liquor License temporarily taken away. He said the District Attorney will determine whether to prosecute. 2149

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - Westfield Mall will be terminating its leases with two pet stores operating on their properties in San Diego County. It comes after two animal rights groups filed a lawsuit against Westfield and Bark Avenue, the pet store in the North County Fair mall.“We want to shut them down,” said Bryan Pease, attorney for the Animal Protection and Rescue League and Not One Animal Harmed. The complaint accuses Bark Avenue of unfair business practices. Despite a new state law that prohibits the retail sale of cats, dogs and rabbits, except for rescues, Bark Avenue has continued to sell purebred and designer puppies. RELATED: California limits pet store sales of cats, dogs and rabbits to rescue or shelter animals only“On the surface of it, the store is claiming these are from a rescue called Bark Adoptions. Well, Bark Adoptions is a fraudulent rescue that is run by the same people that own the store,” said Pease.A 10News investigation into Bark Adoptions is included as a resource in the lawsuit.Jasmin Ramirez, the manager of Bark Avenue told 10News she had not been served yet so she could not comment on the lawsuit.RELATED: Investigation into pet stores reveals 'puppy laundering scheme'She acknowledged that they will be leaving their location in the North County Fair, but said it was due to recent thefts.“We are currently in our efforts to move locations,” said Ramirez.Pease said lawyers for Westfield also told him they will terminate a lease with the Puppy Patch, a pet store in their National City mall.A spokesperson for Westfield only told 10News, “we don’t comment on litigation.”Both of the store’s leases will end in January. 1674
