BEIJING, April 24 (Xinhua) -- The People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy should comprehensively push forward its modernization to constantly enhance its capability to carry out its missions in the new century and new phase, Chinese President Hu Jintao said here Friday.     Hu, also chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the remarks when meeting with veteran officers and model soldiers of the PLA Navy Friday night, a day after the 60th anniversary of the founding of the PLA naval force.     Hu first paid respects to the veteran officers and model soldiers for their contributions to the development of the navy and extended regards to all members of the navy. BEIJING, May 14 (Xinhua) -- Two revised rules involving a planned Nasdaq-style stock market, the Growth Enterprise Market (GEM), will take effect on June 14, according to the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) Thursday.     The two rules involve establishing an independent committee to approve listings for the GEM and the management of sponsors of IPOs.     The two rules are taken as a key step closer toward introducing the much-anticipated GEM, a board intended to nurture innovation-driven start-ups as the government tries to help smaller companies get financing and encourage technological advances.     The rules are the same as the drafts issued on April 17 to solicit public opinions, said the CSRC.     Under the rules, the new panel will have 35 members. Five will come from the CSRC and the others from the accounting, law and other sectors. The panel won't include members of the review panel for IPO application on the main board.     Under the rules, the sponsors of IPOs on the GEM are required to monitor the companies' performance for three years, up from two for companies on the main board.

BEIJING, July 3 (Xinhua) -- Rainstorms since early the week have swept a wide swathe of south China, leaving dozens people dead or missing and forcing hundreds of thousands to evacuate.     In Jiangxi Province, two people were killed, three more were missing and more than 100,000 have been evacuated following the heaviest rain this summer, local flood control authorities said. The rain damaged 178,000 hectares of crops, caused 8,231 houses to collapse, and incurred a direct economic loss of 1.31 billion yuan (191.7 million U.S. dollars). SINGAPORE, April 25 (Xinhua) -- Singapore's Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew met with visiting Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong here on Saturday.     During the meeting, Liu said that China-Singapore relations have developed rapidly, and cooperations in various fields between the two countries have made great achievements.     She said that the friendly and mutually beneficial cooperations between the two countries have shown great foresight and have been advancing with times.     "The Suzhou Industrial Park has set a successful example for economic and technological cooperations between China and foreign countries. The Tianjin Eco-City, construction of which started last year, unveiled a new chapter for bilateral cooperations in sustainable development and environmental protection fields. The bilateral trade and economy relations have entered a new stage with the China-Singapore Free Trade Agreement coming into effect this year," Liu said.     Liu noted that the all-round development of the China-Singapore relationship is conducive to the two peoples and promoting prosperity and stability in the region.     "Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew, who is a key founder of the China-Singapore relationship, has devoted enduring effort for the friendship between the two countries."
