SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Five of California's 10 largest fires ever are still burning.The largest of the state's wildfires, the August Complex fire, is now California's largest wildfire on record, burning 471,185 acres since Aug. 17. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Dramatic video shows what happened after a liquor store owner caught thieves taking off with a pricey bottle in University City.The theft that spurred Haithem Ballo into action unfolded on in afternoon in September. Surveillance video shows two women entering Courtesy Liquor and Deli. Ballo says the two women asked about his day and browsed the store. They asked about prices, pulling out inexpensive options and put them back on the shelf.A few minutes later, one of the two grabs a 0 bottle of Johnnie Walker Scotch Whisky. At the checkout, one of women is seen walking out. The other woman waits. I know they are thieves," said Ballo.Ballo is heard shouting as he takes off after them, with one thought in his mind."I feel like they robbed me, and I have to get it from them," said Ballo.RELATED: Plant thief targets Poway business, other thefts nearbySurveillance video shows Ballo yanking the driver door open and jumping onto the truck. He grabs at the bottle, in the hands of a woman in the back. With the truck on the move, he's struck in the head with the bottle. A man in the passenger seat punches him in the face, before Ballo finally jump off, allowing the truck to speed off."We work hard for this money, got a big family. It's not easy to let people steal from you," said Ballo.Ballo says the three he saw are part of a ring of at least eight thieves that have stolen pricey liquor from the Vons store next door, repeatedly for the past six months. He says the same two women were recorded stealing from Vons this weekend. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hours spent in after-school programs can play an important role in a child's development.Advocates say they're essential to closing the achievement and opportunity gap, providing underserved students with additional academic hours, enrichment activities, and a safe environment.While California fares better than many states when it comes to availability and affordability, some programs still end up filling to capacity.RELATED: Summer literacy program turning the page on povertyFor K-8 programming, before and after school programs are funded through the state of California's After School Education and Safety Program (ASES) or the federally-funded 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st?CCLC). California's ASES program is funded through a 2002 voter-approved initiative and current funding is 0 million for programming throughout the state. School sites receive funding based on their Free and Reduced Priced Meals (FRPM) rate through a competitive grant process.While the costs, demands, and expectations of ASES programs have consistently increased, advocates say the funding has not kept pace for over a decade.The 2017-18 budget raised the daily funding formula from .50 to .19 per student, only about half the funding needed to keep pace with the minimum wage.Some schools offer fee-based options in addition to their free programming.BY THE NUMBERSAccording to San Diego County Office of Education:K-8 students are also served at 21 independent charters throughout San Diego County. Some K-8 school sites are at full enrollment, while some school sites do not have full enrollmentSchools serving 9-12 students are able to through 21st CCLC (ASSETs) funding. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Gun control activists filled Balboa Park Thursday, demanding gun control for the safety of students.Wendy Wheatcroft, the director of "Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense In America, says the event was in response to the school shooting in Parkland, Florida.  As a mother of three, she was horrified.“I want to be able to do everything in my power to make sure they grow up in a safe environment,” Wheatcroft said.RELATED: Victims of Parkland shootingWheatcroft says California has some of the toughest gun laws in the country and should be the model for the federal level.“In California, we have a gun law called the gun violence restraining order and this allows people to remove weapons from someone they deem to be a threat to themselves or others,” she said.  “If they had this law in Florida, they could have prevented this from happening.”RELATED: Vigil held for Parkland shooting victimsJim Miller is with the San Diego Gun Owner’s Political Action Committee. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Former KUSI anchor Sandra Maas is suing the station for million, alleging retaliatory termination and violation of the Equal Pay Act. Maas’ attorneys claim McKinnon Broadcasting Company and the company's actions “have caused, and will continue to cause, Maas emotional distress and loss of earnings."Maas was hired by KUSI in 2004 as a morning news co-anchor. In 2010, she was promoted to evening co-anchor. The lawsuit states Maas initiated additional duties for herself in 2016 when she started writing, producing and anchoring a weekly segment called “Healthy Living.” In 2017, court documents say Maas suspected she was underpaid compared to her male peers. The lawsuit claims her suspicions were confirmed when a former manager told her a male co-anchor was being paid ,000 more than her per year. The lawsuit states that in December of 2017, Maas brought up the issue of pay inequity during contract negotiations and “was given the runaround.” After sending a written complaint to her manager and the station’s general manager, Mike McKinnon Jr., the lawsuit says McKinnon told Maas he “did not like the tone of [her] email.”The last few paragraphs of the lawsuit claim failure to provide equal pay to women, gender and/or age discrimination, failure to prevent discrimination, and retaliation.
