SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Days after pleading guilty to misusing campaign funds, Congressman Duncan Hunter has announced he will resign from Congress.Hunter, who represented the 50th District, pleaded guilty Tuesday to a federal charge of conspiracy to misuse campaign funds for personal use. Though after the plea, it wasn't clear if the embattled Congressman would resign.“Shortly after the Holidays I will resign from Congress. It has been an honor to serve the people of California’s 50th District, and I greatly appreciate the trust they have put in me over these last 11 years," Rep. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Brendan Watters had big plans for Ballast Point the moment his company took control March 2. That includes creating new beers, and driving a wrapped bus around San Diego for two months announcing that the iconic craft brewery was back under local control. All of that hit a snag two days after sale closed, when Gov. Gavin Newsom announced a State of Emergency because of the coronavirus outbreak. "So basically a week after we were closing up operations," said Watters, the brewery's CEO, who moved to San Diego after the sale. "We had to pivot straight away."Watters' company, Kings and Convicts, bought Ballast Point from Constellation Brands, a Fortune-500 beverage company that paid billion for the San Diego brewer in 2015. Watters declined to disclose the sale price, but did confirm it was less than billion. He said Ballast Point, which launched in San Diego in 1996, lost some of its local charm under an international brand. He says he plans to bring that back, with two new beers launching this summer and an emphasis on design, such as the famous oceanic art that accompanies each one. Still, he faced an unprecedented challenge two days after closing. The tap rooms all shut down, eviscerating 50 percent of its revenue (Watters estimates total revenue fell as much as 60 percent). Watters says the brewery focused on its distribution, and was aided by a federal stimulus loan. Now, the Miramar and Little Italy tasting rooms are reopening with social distancing alterations, such as spaced out tables, and smartphone ordering systems. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Consumer spending in San Diego was down nearly .3 billion between February and April 2020, showing just how badly the COVID-19 pandemic crippled the local economy.Since stay-at-home orders began in March, SANDAG says taxable sales in the region dropped from an average of .3 billion to billion in April.The largest losses in the region were seen at apparel stores (an 83% decrease in sales) and restaurants (down 67%).On the other side, big-box retailers like Costco, Target, and Walmart have fared well, SANDAG says. Grocery stores and pharmacy, though, were actually down 10% in taxable sales. Home improvement sales were also up, likely due to stimulus checks, SANDAG adds."It is interesting to learn that grocery stores and pharmacy sales are actually down by 10%, while home improvement sales have spiked," said SANDAG Chief Economist Ray Major. "We can assume that during the pandemic, people had more time to work on outdoor landscaping, gardens, and other home beautification projects. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As President Donald Trump threatens to shutdown the U.S.-Mexico Border, San Diego leaders are in Mexico City to strengthen economic ties and talk binational business.Five mayors and nearly 100 elected officials, business and community leaders from San Diego and Baja California left for Mexico Sunday for the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce’s 14th annual Binational Delegation to Mexico City.San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer said the top two issues up for discussion are the continuing Mexican sewage runoff problems that impact our beaches and the free trade relationship between the U.S. and Mexico.Monday, Mexican officials said 70 percent of trade with the U.S. is by trucks, and the Mexican Government is ready to collaborate with the U.S. to ensure border safety and that trade flows efficiently.“Free trade is incredibly important to our region here in San Diego,” said Faulconer. "We have over 100,000 jobs that are dependent upon trade with Mexico.”Faulconer said the goal is to create a safe, secure and functioning border. He is also calling for the approval of the new United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, or USMCA.The Chamber also said advancing USMCA is a key priority of this week's meeting.Monday the delegation will discuss the U.S. Mexico trade relationship, including the border, immigration and economic development. On Tuesday the delegation will discuss the U.S. Mexico water policy.Imperial Beach Mayor Serge Dedina has been pushing for the Mexican government to rebuild basic sewage infrastructure. The sewage runoff from the Tijuana River Valley flows into some of our local beaches, shutting them down for days and sometimes even months.Dedina said he hopes to come back to San Diego with new solutions to resolve the ongoing, decades-old issue.“Will be really pressing really hard with high-level officials to really move this forward so we can continue to have clean beaches,” he said Sunday.The leaders will wrap up their trip to Mexico on Wednesday. 2016
