NANJING -- Police in Nanjing, East China's Jiangsu Province, have nabbed 47 suspects over human trafficking and rescued 40 babies, said senior officers with the Nanjing railway police office on Friday.A group of four women, each holding a newborn baby in arms but never breast-feeding the infants, arouse police suspicion on May 24 on a train from Kunming, capital of Southwest China's Yunnan Province, to Nanjing and were questioned.The women, including one identified as Lang Chunyan from Tancheng County of East China's Shandong Province, confessed that the babies were bought from Yunnan and they had been doing so with the help of two other suspects, Dao Xiufen and Ding Fachang, since 2005. While Lang's husband, Shen Yuzhou, was in charge of selling babies with the help of 10 human traders in Shandong.Lang also confessed that they usually buy a baby girl at 1,500 yuan (US0) but sell it for 8,000 yuan, while a baby boy usually costs them 8,000 yuan and can fetch 20,000 yuan for them.The Nanjing railway police set up a special team of more than 10 policemen to investigate the case.The team arrived in Yunnan on May 27 and arrested Dao, Ding and seven other suspects. Shen was later arrested in Shandong.Investigations found that the gang of human traders headed by Shen and Lang have bought 27 newborn babies in Yunnan during 16 trips and then sold them in Shandong.Forty out of more than 60 babies who were trafficked by the gang have been rescued by police so far, while police were trying to find the others.

BEIJING - China is trying to improve the role of the country's more than 2,400 museums to make them more accessible to the public, according to an ongoing national conference attended by directors of provincial cultural relics departments.The museums, which are sponsored by the government, institutions or individuals, hold nearly 10,000 exhibitions on different themes annually. In all, they received about 150 million visitors each year.A big boost, thanks to government efforts, is that more and more Chinese museums have stopped its long-time practice of selling tickets to visitors.Increasingly, critics had complained that the expensive charges collected by educational and cultural institutions had become a big financial burden on Chinese families.To date, more than 1,000 museums and memorial institutions have been officially made educational bases for patriotism and popular science. They received 32 million underage visitors annually.

BEIJING, March 26 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met with Malawian President Bingu wa Mutharika here on Wednesday, and called for setting up formal mechanism to guide and coordinate bilateral trade cooperation.     Wen told Mutharika that to enhance China-Malawi friendly cooperative ties was in the fundamental interests of both sides, adding China was ready to expand substantial cooperation with Malawi.     The premier called on both countries to confer on setting up a guidance and coordination mechanism for trade cooperation. China would encourage its enterprises to increase imports from Malawi in a bid to stimulate bilateral trade and promote its balanced development. China's production of natural gas rose 23.1 percent last year, faster than in 2006, to 69.31 billion cubic meters as the country used more "clean" energy, an industry association said.In 2006, output jumped 19.2 percent to 58.55 billion cubic meters, the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association (CPCIA) said. It also said that output would likely hit 76 billion cubic meters this year. China used 55.6 billion cubic meters of gas in 2006, an increase of 21.6 percent from a year earlier, according to statistics from BP.China has set a target of raising the proportion of natural gas in its total energy consumption to 5.3 percent in 2010 from 2.8 percent in 2005, amid efforts to curb pollution. Coal now accounts for about 70 percent of total energy consumption.The expansion of the natural gas infrastructure, including pipelines, reflected the rapid increases in output and consumption, the CPCIA said.China plans to start building a second east-west gas pipeline this year. The first such pipeline went into commercial operation in 2004.The new pipeline is scheduled to become operational in 2010 and will have a designed annual transport capacity of 30 billion cubic meters. It will mainly move natural gas from Central Asia to the Yangtze and Pearl River Deltas, the country's two most developed regions.Construction on another pipeline, which will link the Puguang Gas Field in the southwestern province of Sichuan, one of the country's largest, with the Yangtze River Delta, started last August.

BEIJING - Chinese share prices rebounded by 1.88 percent on Tuesday with the Shanghai Composite Index, which covers both A and B shares, closing at 5,285.45 points at the end of morning session.The Shenzhen Component Index on the smaller bourse ended at 17,213.70  points, up 0.87 percent.The rise came after a fund has been approved to open for additional subscriptions late this week, which is believed to be a new signal from the government to back up the stock market.On November 4, China's Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) issued a notice ordering fund firms not to expand the promised scale of their funds within six months.Heavy weights drove up the share prices. Sinopec went up by 6.58 percent while the new market heavy weight PetroChina by 2.88 percent. China Shenhua rose by 2.36 percent.Steel shares also jumped, with Baosteel, the nation's biggest steel producer, rising 4.10 percent to 15.75 yuan, and with Anyang steel up by 9.39 percent to 10.25 yuan.On Monday, the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index dropped 2.4 percent, or 127.81 points, to close at 5,187.73 points, after falling to as low as 5,032.58 points in intra-day trading.Last week, the Shanghai Composite Index fell 8 percent to 5,315.54, the biggest weekly loss during the past nine years.
