Have you ever considered traveling alone? It can be intimidating, especially as you get older. But Leyla Alyanak, who is in her 60s, says she prefers it. “Ninety percent of the time I travel on my own, and I love it," Alyanak says. She's traveled all over the world, from Kyrgyzstan and South Korea, all by herself. Alyanak took her first solo trip when she was just 15 years old. One of her favorite perks of traveling alone is the freedom. "The freedom to decide what I want to do, when I want to do," she says. While being adventurous is exhilarating, Alyanak says there are some downsides to traveling solo.First, it can be expensive. Because you’re alone, you don’t have someone to split the costs of lodging and other exposes. Secondly, there are times were a solo traveler can experience loneliness. However, Alyanak says traveling solo does force you to meet new people. Then, there’s the issue of safety. "Yes, there is a little bit more of vulnerability but nothing you can't prepare yourself against,” she says. “All you have to do is expect things are going to be like that you just need to be a little bit more careful and watchful." If traveling solo sounds fun but you're still unsure, Alyanak recommends planning a solo trip close to where you live. When you’re ready to go abroad, choose a country where English is prevalent, like Canada, England and Ireland. "Then, they should embrace a country where the tourist infrastructure is really good, but at the same time, the language is different,” Alyanak recommends. “But enough people do speak English in places like Mexico, Italy, Spain." Once you're feeling really adventurous, try a place with a language barrier. Alyanak says your saving grace will be the smartphone app Google Translator. "Going to a country where you don't speak the language or any of the languages, that can be a little unsettling, so I’m really glad I had the app with me. It made all the difference." She says all her experiences while traveling solo has given her a newfound confidence. "Take it easy,” she says. “Take baby steps. Start small and just relish the freedom that you are going to have all on your own." Former Peruvian president Alan Garcia died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head as police were preparing to arrest him on corruption charges Wednesday.His death was confirmed by current President Martin Vizcarra, who expressed his condolences over Twitter."Devastated by the death of former President Alan Garcia, I send my condolences to his family and loved ones," Vizcarra wrote.Garcia, 69, was rushed to the hospital in the capital Lima on Wednesday in critical condition, the state news agency Andina reported."The former president made the decision to shoot himself," his lawyer Erasmo Reyna said outside the Casimiro Ulloa hospital.Carlos Morán, the interior minister, said in an interview with CNN affiliate TV Peru that police arrived at Garcia's home at 6.30 a.m. to execute an arrest warrant.When police arrived, Garcia asked them to call his attorney and then he entered his bedroom, Morán said. Moments later, a gunshot was heard. Four Arkansas teens were going door to door to raise money for their high school football team when a woman held them at gunpoint, police say.The 10th-grade boys, who are all black and who were not identified because of their ages, were selling discount cards for restaurants and stores in Wynne, Arkansas, on August 7. Jerri Kelly, who told police that she is a former law enforcement officer and the wife of a county jail administrator, stopped them in front of her home, according to a police report.Kelly, who is white, said she saw the boys making a ruckus, according to the police report. She called the Wynne Police Department to report "suspicious persons" and in a later statement said, "All males were African American, and I know this residence to be white."As the boys approached her home, walking up her driveway and standing in her yard, Kelly picked up her revolver and came out to ask what they were doing, according to her statements. Even though they said they weren't stealing, Kelly told police, she instructed them to get on the ground.One boy told officers that he thought it was a joke until Kelly said to "get on the f***ing ground and spread your legs," the police report says.When they were on the ground, the boys said in their statements, she told them she would shoot if they moved. She asked whether they knew who she was and whose house it was. When the boys tried to explain what they were doing, they told police, she accused them of lying."I thought she was going to shoot me in the head, how she was acting," one boy said in his statement.When officers arrived, they found the four boys lying face-down on the ground, with their hands behind their backs, and Kelly standing about 10 feet from them with a gun drawn, according to the police report.
