SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Starting Monday, CVS Pharmacy will begin giving COVID-19 vaccines to staff and residents at California's long term care facilities. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Some local leaders believe a significant number of homes that could help ease the housing shortage are actually vacant, and it may be time to consider a 'vacancy tax.'On any given night, amid the bright lights of the downtown skyline, are the not-so-bright, 41-story towers of the Harbor Club condominiums. Aaron Howe lives two blocks away."Just kind of empty and lonely. You see a few lights, but it's mostly dark," said Howe.Sources tells 10News, at various times in the past decade, as many as half the units have been vacant, meaning they are not a primary residence. I'm concerned you have people making investments in their fourth, fifth and sixth homes. To tackle the housing crisis, you can't just build something you call housing. According to the the real estate tracker CoStar, San Diego's vacancy rate is about 4.5 percent. A healthy market is around 7 or 8 percent, but those numbers generally account for apartments, not single family homes and condos. Months ago, the San Diego Housing Commission directed staff to look into more accurate vacancy numbers, a first step that could lead to the proposal of a vacancy tax, similar to one enacted in Vancouver, British Columbia in 2017. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Six people were arrested at a Pacific Beach DUI checkpoint Friday night, according to San Diego Police.The checkpoint was held on the 2700 block of Garnet Avenue between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m.According to the department, nearly 1,350 vehicles passed through the checkpoint, 845 were screened, seven drivers evaluated, and six arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.“Checkpoints are placed in locations that have the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence and provide the greatest safety for officers and the public,” the department said. 619

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Some San Diego Police Department officers are being isolated as they await test results for coronavirus, according to SDPD Chief David Nisleit.Those officers were exposed to the virus and are currently under isolation, Chief Nisleit told 10News anchor Jim Patton. A spokesperson from Oceanside Police says they're doing more phone or online reports when possible. Dispatch and officers are also asking more questions about cold and flu-like symptoms.A video from the Chula Vista Department tells the public, "We may ask you to wear a mask."Starting Friday, Chula Vista Police will be taking an extra step. A spokesperson says they'll strongly suggest officers wear protective equipment for all interactions with the public closer than six feet. The San Diego Sheriff's Department, along with El Cajon, Chula Vista, Oceanside, and Carlsbad Police say none of their officers has tested positive.
