A new poll found many parents have no plans to get their children the flu shot this year.According to a new report published by C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, 34 percent of U.S. parents say their children are unlikely getting the vaccine this flu season.Dr. Judith Shlay with Denver Public Health says it can be extremely dangerous to opt out of getting the shot. "They can be hospitalized and die from it as we saw last year, and we assume this year will be just as bad as last year," Dr. Shlay says.Of the 1,977 parents polled, the report found 48 percent of the participants said they usually follow the recommendations of their child’s healthcare provider when making decisions about the flu shot. But 21 percent say they don’t remember if their doctor recommended the vaccine.Many adults The NOW spoke with say they don’t remember flu shots being recommended by doctors when they were younger. Dr. Shlay says before the year 2000, they weren't."Before that time period, we were only asking high-risk adults, elderly and at-risk children to get vaccinated," Dr. Shlay explains.Parents says they have their own reasons as to why they don't get their kids flu shots. Some of those reasons include potential side effects, the belief the shot doesn’t work and that their child is healthy and doesn’t need to be vaccinated."You might still get the flu, but by taking the vaccine, you will reduce the disease burden from taking it. A suspect wanted in the fatal shooting of a prominent Houston cardiologist is the subject of an arrest warrant, Houston police said at a news conference on Wednesday.Joseph James Pappas, 65, is the suspect, Chief Art Acevedo said. He has not been seen for the past two days, the chief said.Acevedo told reporters a tip came in Tuesday after surveillance video released a day before showed the suspect, whom someone said they recognized.The suspect's mother was a patient of the doctor and died during surgery 20 years ago, Acevedo said.Dr. Mark Hausknecht, who treated former President George H.W. Bush, was fatally shot as he rode to work at Houston Methodist Hospital on July 20.The renowned cardiologist and the suspect were seen shortly before the shooting riding their bicycles on South Main Street, police said. 825

A Phoenix boy is in the hospital after his mother's boyfriend allegedly broke his bones and pulled out his hair. Phoenix police report that on Wednesday, they arrested 25-year-old Steven Darrell Nelson at his home near 7th Street and Union Hills Drive. Three weeks earlier, a 4-year-old boy who also lives at Nelson's home was taken to the hospital with multiple life-threatening injuries. Pediatricians at Phoenix Children’s Hospital report that the child had a broken arm, broken leg, lacerated liver, bowel perforation, "multiple areas of hair loss from hair being pulled out by the roots," and bruising throughout his body.The boy has been hospitalized for the past three weeks, and allegedly told police, "Steven hurt me." Upon his arrest, Nelson reportedly told police that they were playing when the injuries occurred, and, "he hoped that one day they could be friends."  926

A mural of George Floyd in Salt Lake City, Utah, had black tar thrown on it over the weekend. This is the second time the mural has been defaced, a week after the first vandalism. Police confirmed they are investigating the vandalism and whether it constitutes a hate crime under Utah's new law. As of Monday afternoon, the mural was restored by local artists. The pop art-style mural of Floyd's face was painted by anonymous artists, and has become a makeshift memorial alongside images of others who have been killed by police. Floyd was killed by police in Minneapolis last month after an officer held him down with a knee on Floyd's neck for more than 8 minutes. Floyd is Black, the officer involved is white. A study that was pre-published on Wednesday indicates that a coronavirus mutation is causing the virus to be more contagious, a study authored by the Houston Methodist Hospital found. The study, however, concluded that the virus is not more potent.The study examined 5,000 COVID-19 strains from the Houston metro area. The study found very two distinct waves over the summer.The researchers found that COVID-19 infections from the second wave contained the Gly614 amino acid replacement in spike protein. The researchers said that while this amino acid caused “significantly higher virus loads,” this did not increase the potency of the virus.“We found little evidence of a significant relationship between virus genotypes and altered virulence, stressing the linkage between disease severity, underlying medical conditions, and host genetics,” the study said. “Some regions of the spike protein - the primary target of global vaccine efforts - are replete with amino acid replacements, perhaps indicating the action of selection," according to a summary of the findings.The researchers said that the study is intended to help scientists understand the composition and trajectory of future infection waves.It is important to note that the study has not been peer reviewed, and was limited to cases in the Houston area. 1326
