LOS ANGELES (AP) — California’s plan to safely reopen its economy will begin to require counties to bring down coronavirus infection rates in disadvantaged communities that have been harder hit by the pandemic. The complex new rules announced late Wednesday set in place an “equity metric.” It will force larger counties to control the spread of COVID-19 in areas where Black, Latino and Pacific Islander groups have suffered a disproportionate share of the cases because of a variety of socioeconomic factors. The equity measure will require that positive test rates in its most disadvantaged neighborhoods, where rates are often much higher, do not significantly lag behind the county overall.Health officials in San Diego, Orange and San Francisco counties said they already have been targeting vulnerable communities with testing for the virus, providing interpreters and taking other measures to address inequality.Supporters of a more rapid reopening criticized the measure. 988
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jon Stewart is returning to TV with a new home more than five years after bowing out as host of “The Daily Show.”The Apple TV+ streaming service says Stewart will host an hour-long current affairs series exploring topics of national interest as well as his advocacy work.Stewart has been an outspoken supporter of military veterans and 9/11 first responders. He and his wife, Tracey, are also animal rights proponents. The Hollywood Reporter described Stewart’s multi-year deal with Apple as “expansive” and said the upcoming show has already been greenlit for multiple seasons.Stewart’s production company will also have a first-look deal for other projects to be developed and produced for Apple, the Hollywood Reporter says. The new series is expected to debut in 2021 — so if Stewart wants to weigh in on a presidential race, as he regularly did on his long-running Comedy Central show, he’ll have to wait until the 2024 contest.Welcome back, Jon Stewart. https://t.co/oXo4nQBsYv— Apple TV (@AppleTV) October 28, 2020 1047

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- California's overwhelmed hospitals are setting up makeshift extra beds for coronavirus patients, and a handful of facilities in hard-hit Los Angeles County are drawing up emergency plans in case they have to limit how many people receive life-saving care. The number of people hospitalized across California with confirmed COVID-19 infections is more than double the state's previous peak, reached in July.A state model forecasts the total could hit 75,000 patients by mid-January.Dr. Christina Ghaly, Los Angeles County's health services director, said plans for rationing care are not in place yet, but they need to be established because "the worst is yet to come." 695
