The US stock market sank deeper into the red following sluggish economic reports on Monday and bad news from a couple of blue-chip giants. The Dow fell 600 points by late afternoon, or 2.6%. The S&P 500 lost 2.6% and retreated to its lowest level of the year. And the Nasdaq joined the Dow & S&P 500 in negative territory for 2018. All three indexes have plunged about 7% so far this December. The Dow closed down 507 points for the day.And the Russell 2000 index of small-cap stocks tumbled into a bear market, marking a 20% decline from the record highs notched in late August.A weaker reading from the New York Federal Reserve about manufacturing in the Empire State and a drop in confidence from the nation's homebuilders weighed on the markets."Investors are zeroing in on this idea of slower growth for 2019," said Michael Arone, chief investment strategist at State Street Global Advisors. "More people are worried about a recession in late 2019 or 2020."The political noise in Washington isn't helping either. President Trump, in a tweet Monday morning, repeated his criticism of the Federal Reserve for its recent rate hikes. The Fed meets Wednesday and is widely expected to raise rates again. But Trump tweeted that "it is incredible that with a very strong dollar and virtually no inflation, the outside world blowing up around us, Paris is burning and China way down, the Fed is even considering yet another interest rate hike. Take the Victory!"The Fed is supposed to be politically independent. Any evidence that it might be swayed by attacks from Trump could unnerve the markets."If the Fed doesn't raise rates it will look like it's succumbing to the bullying of Trump's tweets," Arone said. But Nancy Perez, managing director at Boston Private, said the Fed is likely to slow down its pace of rate hikes in 2019 simply because the economy is slowing, not because of pressure from Trump.Perez added that the recent market turmoil is justified because investors are readjusting to this fact."We have been getting a bump in profit margins due to lower taxes but the earnings growth itself is not sustainable," Perez said. "Projections will come down and volatility will continue." 2247

The virus has seniors trapped, stuck inside for their own safety. But even quarantined inside nursing homes, the novel coronavirus still managed to find a way in.Tonya Dubois is the director of nursing for the Hillsborough County Nursing Home in Goffstown, New Hampshire. At one point back in May, 150 residents here were infected with COVID-19. By the time the outbreak was over, 50 seniors had died from complications related to COVID-19.The staff was heartbroken.¡°What people had to see, it was very hard,¡± Dubois recalled as she held back tears. ¡°These staff members stayed and held patients' hands; they never died alone.¡±Limiting the virus spread has been hard. Months later, only two people in the nursing home now have COVID-19. That¡¯s thanks in part to a no-visitor policy here and across the country in other senior care facilities. Isolating for safety though has also come at the expense of senior¡¯s mental health.¡°A lot of them don¡¯t get to talk to people all day. Some have families, and some don¡¯t,¡± said Tammie Richard, who also works as a nurse at Hillsborough.Through much of the spring, Richard noticed how depressed residents were getting without haircuts. Because of the virus, the facility¡¯s beauty parlor had to be been shut down. Richard, who's also a cosmetologist, decided to take her show on the road.Or at least down the hallway. She found a way to do trims, cuts, and color safely. While wearing PPE and sanitizing her equipment, she able to cut residents' hair one room at a time.¡°The touching, touching, and talking to somebody, the hour, the half-hour they love getting their hair done. I just want them to feel comfortable, relaxed, and happy,¡± Richard added. With residents here cut off from the outside world, a simple cut is doing wonders for these seniors¡¯ mental health. Because Richard is a licensed nursing assistant, she's considered essential. She and another cosmetologist on staff can check the resident¡¯s vital signs, while at the same time taking a little more off the top.Nursing homes nationwide are now adopting similar ideas.¡°It makes them not feel as depressed. It makes them have a different level of comfort. It makes them feel normal again,¡± Richard said about the cuts she¡¯s been giving. Not only is she keeping seniors looking young, but she's also helping them stay young at heart. 2343

The term "money laundering" was never more appropriate than this week, when Dutch police found around 0,000 stuffed inside the drum of a washing machine.A man present in the house during Monday's raid was arrested on suspicion of -- yes, you've guessed it -- money laundering.Authorities were checking for unregistered residents in western Amsterdam when they found the load."The municipal administration revealed that no one lived at the address," the police told CNN in a statement. "When the police did a search through the house they found €350,000 hidden in the washing machine."The police also confiscated several mobile phones, a firearm and a money-counting machine during the raid. The suspect, who is 24 years old, has not been named. The police news release included a picture of bundles of €20 and €50 bills crammed into the washing machine. They said in a statement that the raid was part of an investigation into "housing fraud, money laundering and other [signs] of crime." 997
