Former "The Daily Show" host Jon Stewart had not so nice things to say about Sen. Rand Paul, who was one of two no votes in a bill to provide healthcare to 9/11 victims, including nearly 90,000 first responders. On Tuesday, the U.S. Senate approved a lifetime extension of the 9/11 Victim Fund. Paul, along with Utah Sen. Mike Lee, were the only two senators to vote against the bill. The vote had already been passed in the House, and now awaits President Donald Trump's signature. The bill comes six weeks after an emotional appeal to Congress by Stewart. While the passage of the bill delighted Stewart, Paul's no vote still irked the comedian. 659

FORT ERIE, Ontario, Canada — Strong winds and a massive amount of ice created an unusual scene along the Niagara River in southern Ontario this past weekend. Video posted on Twitter by the Niagara Regional Police Service in Canada on Sunday shows what is being described as a "ice tsunami.”Strong winds blew the ice over a retaining wall from the river, create a large pile of ice along the road. This forced the Niagara Park Roads Department to close the parkway to protect drivers. Wind gusts up to 60 mph have hit the region, downing trees and causing power outages throughout western New York. 616

For these high school seniors, the pool has become their life. So much so, the twin brothers, Cade and Zachary Griffith, both just committed to play water polo in college. The brothers say their decision on where to go to school was tough and overwhelming, but they both decided on Austin College, in Sherman, Texas. “So lucky; we got lucky on that, says the twin’s mom, Lisa Griffith. Their choice was unexpected, because they'd never heard of Austin College before hiring the college athlete recruiting company NCSA. NCSA recruiters knew of Austin College’s plan to start a new water polo program this fall and that they were in need of team members. Lisa Strasman, president and COO of NCSA, and her team help student-athletes navigate the recruitment process. “A lot of kids think the only schools that offer their sport are those they see on ESPN,” Strasman says. “Reality [is] there's so many college opportunities across the country.” NCSA and other companies like it take the student's GPA, sport and education interests and pour through thousands of schools to find the ones that may be a good fit. They then make videos introducing student-athletes to coaches. “People think that college coaches will just discover them. In most cases, that's not reality,” Strasman says. “It's very important that student athletes are proactive."The Griffith's paid ,000 for each of their sons, but NCSA helps families for free, if their parents qualify as low-income. Many of NCSA’s employees are former athletes or college coaches. Online reviews about athlete recruitment companies are mixed. Some families say they have successfully navigated the recruitment process themselves. "I think everybody's situation is different. For us, it was definitely an investment," says Lisa Griffith. Her sons are happy they had the help. “It was just a really easy process to do,” says Zachary Griffith. 1907

FORT THOMAS, Kentucky — Thirteen-year-old Lilliana Schalck, who died unexpectedly this past weekend, was a flyer, her father said. At just 4-feet-10-inches and 80 pounds, the cheerleader was perfectly suited to being tossed into the air by her teammates, topping their human pyramids and landing safely.“Everybody liked her,” father Dan Schalck said. “She was supportive on the mat. Doing her thing, she was fierce, but when it comes to anyone else, she was very supportive.”Doctors still don’t know exactly what happened to the eighth-grader Saturday. Her father was waiting to watch her perform in a Columbus cheer competition when she told her teammates she had begun to feel sick. Her limbs tingled; she felt weak.Dehydration, Dan thought at first. Maybe anxiety, although she had never struggled with that before. The team called an ambulance, and Lilliana was alert enough on the ride to respond to questions. Doctors ferried her from the ambulance to the emergency room to intensive care. Whatever happened, they couldn’t stop it. Less than two hours after she had begun to feel sick, she was gone.“At one point, the medical staff said, ‘If anyone’s close to her, you need to call them,’” her father said. “And I’m like, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me. How can this be?’”He still doesn’t know. But Monday night, the wound still fresh, he was comforted by the Highland Heights community’s outpouring of love and support for his strong-willed, high-flying daughter. She was a middle school student, but she was talented enough to compete with high schoolers. She was a ferocious competitor, but she loved her friends. Even as the Schalck family struggled with overwhelming grief, Dan remained grateful for the kindness of the people who knew her.“There are really kind and good-hearted kids,” he said. 1815
