TIANJIN, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang on Tuesday urged local officials and enterprises to seize opportunities and persevere in reform and opening-up to achieve stable and fast economic growth.     Efforts should be made to foster new areas of economic growth so as to reach the goal of long-term steady and fast economic development, Li said during an inspection tour from Aug. 18-19 in Tianjin, a north China port city. BEIJING, June 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese shares sank to a 15-month low on Tuesday in very low volume, amid weak investor confidence.     The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index fell 2.76 percent to 2,794.75, its 10th loss in a row. The Shenzhen Component Index fared worse, sinking 4.03 percent, or 395.77 points, to 9,429.50.     The Hushen 300 Index, which reflects about 60 percent of the combined market value in Shanghai and Shenzhen, closed at 2,842.68 points, down 109.57 points, or 3.71 percent. BEIJING, June 23 (Xinhua) -- President Hu Jintao on Monday hailed the country's remarkable science and technology achievements since the launch of its 1978 Reform and Opening-up Drive, but he also admitted that there is "still a large gap" with the world's most advanced.     Among developing countries, China had now taken the lead regarding the general level of science and technological development, said Hu, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee.     He attributed the achievements to the full support of the Party, the nation and the hard work by Chinese scientists and technicians.     Hu made the remarks at Monday's inaugural ceremony for both the 14th Congress of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Ninth Congress of the Chinese Academy of Engineering Science. BEIJING, July 15 (Xinhua) -- A senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) said here Tuesday that China values its relations with South Africa and would like to work together with the latter to expand bilateral exchanges and cooperation and enhance the understanding and friendship between their peoples.     Wang Gang, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks while meeting with Blade Nzimande, secretary general of the South African Communist Party (SACP).     China and South Africa have maintained close high-level visits,frequent exchanges, fruitful cooperation, and coordination in international affairs since their diplomatic relations began in 1998, Wang said.
