The Venice Film Festival will go from Sept. 2 through Sept. 12. Italy was among the countries hardest hit by the coronavirus pandemic, and the festival will serve as a celebration of its re-opening and a sign that the film world, largely on pause since March, is coming back as well. HAWTHORNE, Calif. (AP) — Billionaire Elon Musk says he's almost completed a tunnel under a Los Angeles suburb to test a novel transportation system that would scoot commuters underground on electric sleds called skates.Musk tweeted Thursday that, pending regulatory approvals, free rides will be offered to the public in a few months. He also posted an Instagram video of the interior of the tunnel.Last year, the Hawthorne City Council approved an approximately 2-mile (3.2-kilometer) test tunnel from Musk's SpaceX rocket plant to a point east of Los Angeles International Airport.RELATED: Elon Musk releases plan for tunnel system under Los AngelesMusk has described a system in which vehicles would descend via elevators into tunnels and move on electrically powered platforms called skates. He envisions multiple levels of tunnels to escape congestion that plagues surface traffic systems."As mentioned in prior posts, once fully operational (demo system rides will be free), the system will always give priority to pods for pedestrians & cyclists for less than the cost of a bus ticket," Musk tweeted.Musk's tunneling operation, called The Boring Co., is currently seeking approval to push into the city of Los Angeles, which requires separate authorization. So far, a committee of the City Council has agreed that the project should be exempt from environmental review.RELATED: What happened to the Tesla that Elon Musk shot into space?Musk suddenly added tunneling ideas to his SpaceX rocketry and Tesla electric car endeavors more than a year ago.A few weeks after tweeting "Traffic is driving me nuts" and "am going to build a tunnel boring machine and just start digging," he said in January 2017 that tunnel was about to get underway. He acquired a tunnel-boring machine that had been used in a San Francisco Bay Area project and put it down a shaft in a parking lot at the SpaceX facility in Hawthorne. He has also tweeted about a vision for a tunnel that would stretch along the Interstate 405 corridor from LAX to U.S. Highway 101 in the San Fernando Valley, a span of about 17 miles (27 kilometers). It's among the most notorious examples of what Musk has called "soul-destroying" Los Angeles traffic. 2238
Harry Leslie Smith, a World War II veteran and fierce critic of austerity politics, has died at the age of 95.Smith's son, John, confirmed his father had died in his adopted homeland, Canada, in the early hours of Wednesday morning."I am an orphan," he wrote on his father's official Twitter account. Smith fell ill and was hospitalized around a week ago, while John kept running his father's account. He added: "My dad had been so dreadfully thirsty because he'd had nil by mouth orders for almost a week. So when he decided that the potential for full recovery was not possible, he was allowed to drink a beer. Sadly though he couldn't eat."Smith was born in Yorkshire in northern England to a family of miners and grew up in poverty. He lived through the Great Depression, a period of his life that had shaped his political views. He served in Britain's Royal Air Force in World War II, but it was in his later years that he became more involved in political debate. He wrote a book, "Don't Let My Past Be Your Future: A Call to Arms," in which he criticizes the austerity policies of the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States, and warns younger generations against the rise of fascism. At the age of 94, Smith started a podcast called "Harry's Last Stand" and launched a fundraising campaign to allow him to tour refugee camps around the world. He was also a vocal supporter of the British Labour Party and advocate for the UK's National Health System, particularly by supporting junior doctors facing wage cuts.He used his Twitter account to amplify his beliefs, reaching more than 250,000 followers.Jeremy Corbyn, the leader of the Labour Party, paid tribute to Smith on Wednesday."We will all miss Harry Leslie Smith - he was one of the giants whose shoulders we stand on. A World War Two veteran who dedicated his life to fighting for our National Health Service, a peaceful world and for countries to meet their moral responsibility by welcoming refugees," Corbyn tweeted. In one post Wednesday, John vowed to continue his father's work: "I know exactly what my steps are. I will follow in his footsteps. I will endeavor to finish his projects." 2164
Holes-in-one are breaking news, but Tony Finau nearly took that literally when he dislocated his ankle celebrating an ace before popping it back in again during the Masters par-three tournament.Finau's ankle-rolling moment was in sharp contrast to the jump for joy of Jack Nicklaus' 15-year-old grandson, who also scored a hole-in-one in the traditional Masters curtain raiser.America's Finau danced backwards down the fairway after holing out from the seventh tee with his wife and four children watching, but turned his left ankle and collapsed to the floor.Finau reached down and repositioned the joint and continued playing in the family friendly event, in which family and friends act as caddies and often hit shots and take putts on Augusta's picturesque short course Wednesday. The 28-year-old was later taken for X-rays, which revealed there was no break."Crazy day," Finau later tweeted. "Thanks for thoughts of concern, messages and prayers from all. I'm optimistic."After an MRI scan Thursday morning, he was cleared to make his Masters debut.Last year favorite and world No.1 Dustin Johnson injured his back falling down stairs on the eve of the Masters and had to pull out. 1193
