NEW YORK CITY, NY -- New York Police Department Deputy Inspector Stewart Loo says he's going to do something about hate crimes targeting Asian Americans in the city.He says it's close to his heart."This hit home for me because I have friends, families who are legitimately afraid to go outside because they have feared for their safety.”The new task force was introduced Tuesday by Chief of Detectives Rodney Harrison."This task force has been built and will continue to build trust and understanding between the NYPD and Asian New Yorkers,” he said.The task force was put together in response to a rise in hate crime attacks on the Asian community amid the coronavirus pandemic. A result of the harsh rhetoric surrounding the virus, which is believed to have originated in Wuhan, China, before spreading around the globe.Some Asian New Yorkers bore the violent backlash of rhetoric gone wrong. There have been 21 attacks in the city since March."Asian New Yorkers were attacked on trans, buses, [in] parks, restaurants and walking in their own neighborhoods,” said Harrison. NEW YORK (AP) — In a sign of how the pandemic is remaking Hollywood traditions, AMC Theatres and Universal Studios on Tuesday announced an agreement for a shortened theatrical window, with the studio’s films playing for a minimum of just 17 days in cinemas compared to the typical 90 days.Studios have increasingly sought to shorten that window and deliver new movies more quickly into the home.After 17 days, Universal Pictures and Focus Features will have the option to make their films available across premium video on demand platforms, including Netflix, Amazon Prime and AMC Theatres On Demand.“The theatrical experience continues to be the cornerstone of our business. The partnership we’ve forged with AMC is driven by our collective desire to ensure a thriving future for the film distribution ecosystem and to meet consumer demand with flexibility and optionality,” said Donna Langley, Chairman of Universal Filmed Entertainment Group in a press release.This deal applies to U.S. theaters, international distribution between the two companies is still being negotiated.AMC and other theater chains have struggled during the pandemic as businesses closed earlier this year and indoor spaces face state-by-state guidance on social distancing and reopening policies.AMC says this multi-year deal with Universal is a commitment and belief that customers will come back.“We would note that just as restaurants have thrived even though every home has a kitchen, AMC is highly confident that moviegoers will come to our theatres in huge numbers in a post-pandemic world. NEW YORK (AP) — Professional networking company LinkedIn is laying off nearly 1,000 employees, or approximately 6% of its global workforce, as a slowdown in hiring amid the coronavirus pandemic pressures its business. In a note to employees, CEO Ryan Roslansky said that the positions that will be eliminated are in its global sales and hiring offices. Roslansky said it's the only layoffs LinkedIn is planning. "To continue adapting and accelerating the company as we have been, we need to ensure we are focusing our efforts and resources against our most strategic priorities to set up the company for success today—and well into the future," Roslansky said in the letter. "When we took a hard look at the business, we decided we needed to make some hard calls."Roslansky said 960 roles across their Global Sales and Talent Acquisition organizations would be eliminated.Impacted U.S. employees will receive at least 10 weeks of severance pay and a year of continuing health coverage through COBRA. Orange County Superior Court Judge Gregory Jones on Friday said he was rejecting a bid by prosecutors to drop the case. He set a hearing for June 12 to determine how to proceed. Prosecutors under a new district attorney claimed they didn’t have enough evidence to prove the charges.Attorneys for alleged victims insisted their clients were drugged and sexually assaulted by orthopedic surgeon Grant Robicheaux and girlfriend Cerissa Riley. NEW YORK CITY — Police are looking for a man they say assaulted a New York City bus driver who asked him to put on a mask before boarding the Manhattan bus.According to the NYPD, the unidentified man attempted to get on the northbound New York City Transit Authority (MTA) bus near Madison Avenue and East 29th Street around 2:30 a.m. Monday without a mandatory face covering.The bus driver, 62, stopped the man, telling him he had to put on a mask to ride the bus, police said.According to authorities, the man punched the bus driver in the face before fleeing the bus in an unknown direction.The victim suffered pain and swelling and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, police said.Face coverings or masks are required on all MTA buses, subways and trains as the city continues to battle the coronavirus pandemic.The NYPD has released the above surveillance images of the man for whom they're searching.This story was originally published by Mark Sundstrom and Rebecca Solomon on WPIX in New York City. 1022
