SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 41-year-old La Vegas man was killed when he crashed his motorcycle into a concrete guardrail on a freeway connector ramp in La Mesa, authorities said Thursday.The crash happened around 5:55 p.m. Wednesday on the connector ramp from eastbound Interstate 8 to northbound state Route 125, California Highway Patrol Officer Jeff Christy said.A man was riding a Harley-Davidson motorcycle when he allowed the bike to veer to the right and strike a concrete guardrail, Christy said. (AP) — A jury is deliberating in the trial of a Southern California man charged with killing a family of four and burying their bodies in the desert.Jurors on Thursday got the case brought by San Bernardino County prosecutors against 62-year-old Charles "Chase" Merritt.Merritt's business associate Joseph McStay, McStay's wife Summer and the couple's 3- and 4-year-old sons vanished from their San Diego County home in 2010. Three years later, their bodies were found in shallow desert graves more than 100 miles away.Merritt was arrested in 2014. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A bill that would keep court hearings related to the release of Sexually Violent Predators open to the public was unveiled Tuesday by a state senator who worked with the San Diego County District Attorney's Office to craft the legislation.SB 1023, dubbed the Sexually Violent Predator Act, would prohibit proceedings related to Sexually Violent Predators -- or SVPs -- from being held behind closed doors, particularly when the hearings involve potentially releasing the offenders to a conditional housing program in the community.Recently, hearings regarding the proposed release and placement of SVP Alvin Ray Quarles, 57, otherwise known as the "Bolder-Than-Most" rapist, were held behind closed doors in San Diego County Superior Court.Judge David Gill kept the hearings under wraps due to privacy concerns over the potential disclosure of Quarles' psychiatric reports.The closed-door nature of the hearings drew protests from victims' advocates, include two of Quarles' victims, Mary Taylor and Cynthia Medina.Sen. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 41-year-old man was jailed Thursday morning on suspicion of seriously injuring his roommate during a fight at a College Area home, police said.It happened shortly before 10:15 p.m. Wednesday at a home on College Avenue near Pontiac Street, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.The 41-year-old man and his 42-year-old male roommate got into an argument for unknown reasons and the argument turned violent, Buttle said.During the fight, the younger roommate punched the 42-year-old man several times in the head, the officer said.Officers responded to the home and took the 41-year-old man, whose name was not immediately available, into custody without incident, Buttle said.The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment of his injuries, which were not believed to be life-threatening, he said. 829
