MUSCAT, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- China's top political adviser Jia Qinglin met Sunday with Oman's Sultan Qaboos bin Saeed in Nizwa city, 140 km from the capital Muscat, during an official good-will visit to promote the bilateral relations.Jia, chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee, hailed the traditional friendship between the two countries and raised proposals to deepen the cooperation.The Chinese people would never forget Oman's assistance for the reconstruction after an 8.0-magnitude earthquake struck southwest China's Sichuan Province in 2008. BAOSHAN, Yunnan, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from mudslides that hit a village in southwest China's Yunnan Province Wednesday has climbed to 24, while 24 others remained missing, officials at the rescue headquarters said Saturday.The mudslides occurred at about 10:20 p.m. Wednesday in a village of Longyang District in Baoshan City.Experts said the area is prone to landslides and it is recommended to permanently remove its population to safer areas, said Zhao Maoqi, vice head of Longyang District Government.Authorities will soon begin to select a site and work on a relocation plan. Local residents are expected to move into new houses early next year, said Zhao.Up to 40,000 cubic meters of debris came crashing down on the village, trapping 71 people from 21 families.An initial investigation blamed the tragedy on loose dirt and rocks sitting atop a steep slope that had been soaked by rain for about 10 days.

FUZHOU, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- Senior Communist Party of China (CPC) leader Zhou Yongkang, while on an inspection tour, has urged officials in the coastal province of Fujian in southeast China to pursue leapfrog economic development.Fujian should make full use of the opportunity for development and put in place the next five-year development plan based upon its real conditions to significantly improve the people's standards of living, said Zhou, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.He further said the province should increase its economic and cultural exchanges with Taiwan.Zhou also told officials to divert more government spending and public services to impoverished areas and low-income residents to boost the development of the old revolutionary base areas, as well as the western and northern areas in Fujian.

BEIJING, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) - China's top economic planning agency Thursday urged authorities nationwide to step up supervision to stabilize prices in food, transportation and tourism during the upcoming holidays.Focus should be attached to cracking down on price rigging, including circulating misleading or false information about price hikes, commodity hoarding or forcing up prices of grain, cooking oil, meat, eggs and dairy products, said an official from the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC).The official also asked involved departments to ramp up measures to regulate prices of public transportation and in the tourism industries, while curbing arbitrary price hikes and irregular charges.Complaints and reports from the public will be accepted at hotline phone number "12358", said the official.This year's Mid-autumn Festival holiday is Sept. 22 to 24, and the National Day holiday lasts from Oct. 1 to 7.
