SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One person was injured late Friday after a stabbing near Fox Canyon in eastern San Diego.A 25-year-old man was with two other people in the 4900 block of Auburn Dr. just after 10 p.m. when an unknown suspect walked up to the group and got in an argument with the victim, San Diego Police said.The argument escalated, ending with the suspect stabbing the victim multiple times in the left side of his body, police said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — More than .5 million in fentanyl was seized during a traffic stop in the South Bay this week.A 2004 Mitsubishi Endeavor was stopped for a speeding violation on Wednesday at about 2:30 p.m. heading westbound on State route 905, according to San Diego County Sheriff's Department (SDSO). Border Patrol agents and SDSO Border Crime Suppression detectives searched the vehicle with a K-9 officer and discovered 20 kilograms of powdered fentanyl concealed in the vehicle. Powdered fentanyl is commonly used to produce fake pharmaceutical drugs, SDSO said.RELATED: Drug experts warn of Carfentanil in San DiegoThe seized narcotics have a street value of more than .5 million, according to SDSO.SDSO said the driver of the car, identified as 24-year-old Marilu Escamilla, and her boyfriend, 36-year-old Fernando Camargo, were arrested and booked into San Diego County Jail for felony transportation of controlled substances and other related charges.SDSO said seizures of fentanyl have become increasingly common in San Diego County. Authorities added they regularly seize counterfeit Oxycodone and Xanax pills, which contain fentanyl. According to the county, fentanyl deaths spiked 155 percent from 33 in 2016 to 84 in 2017. Fentanyl is roughly 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine and 50 times more potent than heroin, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says. 1403

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Pacific Beach alone relies on over 4,000 hospitality workers, often working overnight hours.Safety concerns while on the job, closing up, or walking home are an unfortunate reality of the industry.“When you’re out there, and it’s dark, and you can’t see any one thing around you, I can’t tell you how vulnerable you feel, because you’re constantly looking around you," said Marian Novak, Director of the Responsible Hospitality Coalition.Novak has worked in Pacific Beach since 1991 and currently does responsible beverage training for servers.She and other hospitality workers signed up for a three-hour class with IMPACT Personal Safety, a nonprofit based out of Los Angeles committed to ending the cycle of violence.Organized by Discover Pacific Beach, workers were able to learn verbal strategies, awareness skills, and fighting skills.“When people are intoxicated, they literally don’t make the right decisions," said Lisa Gaeta, founder of IMPACT Personal Safety. “Our philosophy is that once you know you can physically defend yourself, then it’s easier to talk your way out. But if you’re afraid that you’re going to be hurt, it's not so easy, which is why we always teach fighting.”Attendees at the class say after just an hour they felt more confident and empowered. 1304

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- People living along the coast in north county say they can't remember the last time mosquitoes were so bad.Sharon Mauro lives near the San Elijo Lagoon in Solana Beach."Oh, we couldn't leave the house without them attacking us," said Mauro.She hired Tony Gallardo of Mosquito Joe to spray her property."The last few weeks have been very busy. Basically, from the coastline all the way to Poway, the mosquito problem is pretty significant right now," said Gallardo.Gallardo says he sprays roughly 15 homes a day."This is kind of a perfect storm in everybody is stuck at home now, they want to be outside. The kids are getting tired of being inside. You get outside the mosquitos are eating everybody up, they're breeding cause they have more food, strange way to put it," said Gallardo.San Diego County Vector Control crews sprayed the lagoon last week. They also discovered a new trouble spot."A new spot showed up, and we didn't find until it was a wee bit too late. We do have it treated now, so it's going to be a one-time event," said Chris Conlan, the county's supervising vector ecologist.Conlan said the recent high tides contributed to the increase in mosquitoes."Whenever we get a very high tide event, especially something like a King Tide, as the water recedes from those high tide events sometimes leaves standing pools, and this mosquito is very good at taking advantage of that," said Conlan.Conlan said the Black Salt Marsh Mosquito doesn't transmit disease, but it's an aggressive "day biter," and can travel up to five miles.Residents worried about mosquitos near their property should contact the county's vector control program. 1675

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- People in the South Bay are still angry about a point-and-reward system for drug arrests that police say was never officially implemented.Team 10 broke the story last week, when an officer shared an email detailing the program."It's completely everything that we are against as law enforcement officers," said the whistleblower, who asked to hide his identity for fear of retaliation.READ: San Diego Police Chief launches internal investigation into "rewards for arrests" emailThe program offered points for different kinds of drug-related arrests in San Diego's South Bay. Whichever officers got the most points would be rewarded with better assignments.Activists in the South Bay say a program like that would unfairly target low-income communities, which already have large drug problems.They also say it shows there are still culture problems within the San Diego Police Department, incentivizing officers to discriminate."We don't want them here," says protest organizer Tasha Williamson. "We don't want them patrolling, we don't want them supervising, we don't want them to have any authority over people. We're all human beings and we want to be treated as such."But new Police Chief David Nisleit says the program never went into effect. He told reporters Friday that the email went out by mistake and was retracted within days."I can tell you right now this program was never authorized. Nor was it ever implemented," he said.
