WASHINGTON, April 25 (Xinhua) -- Study by scientists at the Rockefeller University shows that anti-inflammatory drugs reduce the effectiveness of the most widely used class of antidepressant medications, the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), taken for depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder and anxiety disorders. This discovery, published online Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, may explain why so many depressed patients taking SSRIs do not respond to antidepressant treatment and suggests that this lack of effectiveness may be preventable. The study may be especially significant in the case of Alzheimer's disease. Such patients commonly suffer from depression and unless this can be treated successfully, the course of the illness is likely to be more severe. Depression in the elderly is also a risk factor for developing Alzheimer's Disease and researchers have suggested that treating depression in the elderly might reduce the risk of developing the disease. In the recent study, investigators treated mice with antidepressants in the presence or absence of anti-inflammatory drugs. They then examined how the mice behaved in tasks that are sensitive to antidepressant treatment. They found that the mice's behavioral responses to antidepressants were inhibited by anti- inflammatory/analgesic treatments. They then confirmed these effects in a human population. Depressed individuals who reported anti-inflammatory drug use were much less likely to have their symptoms relieved by an antidepressant than depressed patients who reported no anti- inflammatory drug use. The effect was rather dramatic since, in the absence of any anti-inflammatory or analgesic use, 54 percent of patients responded to the antidepressant, whereas success rates dropped to approximately 40 percent for those who reported using anti-inflammatory agents."Many elderly individuals suffering from depression also have arthritic or related diseases and as a consequence are taking both antidepressant and anti-inflammatory medications. Our results suggest that physicians should carefully balance the advantages and disadvantages of continuing anti-inflammatory therapy in patients being treated with antidepressant medications," leader author Paul Greengard said.
CHENGDU, May 8 (Xinhua) -- As a brand-name herbal capsule for cardiovascular disease in China, Di'ao Xinxuekang only needs to wait for another 15 years before reaching the EU market."The Dutch medical supervisors have recognized it as a qualified drug, but we still lack the evidence of 15-year presence in the EU market," said Ji Jianxin, a research manager with the drug's developer Di'ao Group based in southwest China's Sichuan Province.Di'ao, one of the largest Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) manufacturers, has been quite depressed, as many other TCM enterprises in China, by a European Union directive on traditional herbal medicinal products fully implemented from the beginning of this month. The directive requires that all herbal medicinal products, must obtain a medical license from any EU member state before it can be allowed in the EU market. It introduced a so-called simplified registration procedure with a seven-year transition period for traditional herbal medicinal products to be licensed, including Chinese and Indian ones. However, not a single Chinese herbal medicinal product has been granted the license so far, mainly due to the prohibitive registration cost and lack of required evidence to prove the product had a 30-year history of safe use, including 15 years in the EU.With a history of more than 2,000 years, TCM did not enter into the EU market until mid-1990s, and it has been imported into the EU and sold to European customers as food supplements instead of drugs. Most Chinese producers and importers did not reserve the customs papers a decade ago, thus unable to prove the 15-year use of their products in European markets. While TCM's globalization won't be doomed by one single EU directive as TCM export value to EU only takes up 14 percent of the total in 2010, experts and industry insiders still have had serious concerns about its future."Most TCM even don't have standardized labels that can help consumers to find out its origin," said Xian Sheng, from the China Association of TCM Export Companies.

BEIJING, March 11 (Xinhuanet) --Women who have a cup or more of coffee everyday may reduce their risk of stroke by as much as 25 percent, according to a new study in the Journal Stroke Thursday. This study, led by Swedish researcher Susanna Larsson of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, followed more than 34,000 Swedish women aged 49 to 83 who were free of heart disease. After 10-year of follow-up, there were 1,680 strokes, and the study found that those who drank at least one cup of coffee each day had a 22 to 25 percent lowered risk of stroke, compared with women who drank less. The study further suggested coffee can help prevent cognitive decline and can boost vision and heart health. It is also related to a reduced risk of liver cancer."We used to worry that (coffee) raises blood pressure and causes increased heart rate, but it appears to be less risky than we thought," said physician Claudette Brooks, spokesperson for the American Stroke Association. Now, exactly what it is about coffee that may lower stroke risk is unknown. But the researchers speculated that coffee might reduce inflammation, lower oxidative stress and help make the body more responsive to insulin. However, some experts kept skeptical about the real impact coffee would have on reducing the incidence of stroke."The problem with this type of study is that there are too many factors unaccounted for and association does not prove causality," Dr Larry B. Goldstein, director of the Duke Stroke Center at Duke University Medical Center said."Subjects were asked about their past coffee consumption in a questionnaire and then followed over time. There is no way to know if they changed their behavior," Goldstein added. In any case, the good news for coffee junkies is that at least drinking coffee don't increase women's risk of stroke.
