SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The family of a man who died after sky-diving in Otay Ranch created a Gofundme page for his two sons left behind.Jonas Wingen said his brother, Joe, died Sunday after suffering a medical emergency while sky diving."Deployed his chute, everything was fine... While he was descending something happened, he had a heart attack I'm not sure," said Wingen.Joe's two sons, Jo Jo and Riley, now moving to Lake Elsinore to live with their mom, while grieving the loss of their father."Jo Jo, it's hitting him hard, he's 14... Riley's handling it well," Wingen said. He said the family created a Gofundme to help ease some of the hardship and support the boys' future."Jo Jo is going to get braces... We're going to put some of it in a college fund for when they hit 18," he said.Riley created a memorial video showing how much they idolized their dad, remembering jam sessions and adventures. Wingen said Joe liked to ride dirtbikes, go surfing and play instruments."You know he worked hard and he played hard. That was Joe, and he loved his two boys," he said. "The last thing he said to me was, 'I'm going sky diving tomorrow wish me luck, woo!'"Wingen said Joe's last text he sent captured his essence: "fears lead to an average life."Wingen said their family is planning a celebration of life for August 5, which would have been Joe's birthday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The National Institutes of Health highlighted research Tuesday out of UC San Diego that could unlock a new way to treat COVID-19.The research reveals new insight into how the coronavirus hijacks cells, and how doctors might be able to set traps or decoys to combat the virus. The findings were published in the journal Cell last month.“It does open up another avenue for a potential treatment,” said UC San Diego distinguished professor Dr. Jeffrey Esko. “It’s not a cure. It would be something that would tamp down infection potentially.”Since January, scientists around the world have understood that SARS-Co-V2, the official name of the new coronavirus, enters cells by latching onto a specific receptor on the cell’s surface, called ACE2.The UCSD team, led by Dr. Esko and visiting scholar Dr. Thomas Clausen, discovered that this entry mechanism is actually a two-step process, and the virus must also attach to a long chain of sugars called heparan sulfate.“We’ve shown this is fundamental to the infectious mechanism, so it needs to be part of every study from now on,” said Clausen.All cells are coated with a complex layer of sugars, or carbohydrates, called glycans. Heparan sulfate is one type of glycan that is known to play a key role in the infection process in several viruses, including herpes and other coronaviruses.It’s a complicated process to picture so the researchers offer an analogy: imagine a bird, soaring over trees, hunting a worm on the forest floor. The bird is the coronavirus and the trees are the thick layer of glycans that coat the surface of the cell.To reach the worm, which in this case is the receptor ACE2, the bird must navigate its way through the trees, specifically through heparan sulfate.The UCSD found that by removing the heparan sulfate trees with an enzyme, they were able to prevent the virus from infecting cells. In laboratory testing, they also found a second technique worked to foil the virus: introducing more trees as bait.The team found that heparin, an FDA-approved drug that is similar in structure to heparan sulfate, successfully acted as decoy. Heparin is a widely used drug designed to treat blood clots. Since blood clots and strokes are common complications with COVID-19, many doctors already administer heparin to patients.The UCSD team demonstrated that the two approaches can block infection in lab-grown cells about 80 to 90 percent of the time.“Certainly in the laboratory you can demonstrate that it works, but to deploy it and use it as a therapeutic has not been demonstrated,” Esko said.The NIH noted that more studies are planned to explore whether heparin, heparan sulfate, or drugs that target heparan sulfate might yield a viable COVID-19 treatment.Dr. Esko said he’s already been in talks with companies that plan to use their study as a rationale for a clinical trial.“It is very humbling when you realize we’re working on a pandemic right now, and maybe what we’ve done can contribute to a treatment for the disease,” he said. 3038

July 1, with those who violate San Diego parking rules receiving written warnings. Starting Wednesday, July 15, citations with fines will be issued.City officials said resumption of parking enforcement is “identified as one small step toward restoring San Diego’s economy.”“We know many residents are looking forward to visiting their favorite restaurants, breweries, cafes, shops and stores, and restarting our local economy. As the City begins to take careful and measured steps to reopen, we need to make sure parking enforcement, especially in our business districts, allows for a healthy flow of customers, ensures accessibility and reinvests back into our communities,” said San Diego’s Deputy Chief Operating Officer Erik Caldwell.Chris Clark, with San Diego’s Small Business Alliance, added, "Like all San Diegans, local business owners have shouldered the burden of our unprecedented situation the past few months. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The California Department of Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC) made changes making it easier for businesses to sell alcohol.This week, the agency made major changes allowing restaurants to sell beer, wine and pre-mixed drinks or cocktails for pick-up or delivery as long as it is sold with food and has a secured top.While the changes will help many business owners, some San Diego bar owners say the ABC needs to take a look at other parts of the law as well."I know my seven employees are hurting, and I am too," said Tony Raso of Bar Sin Nombre.Raso said when the statewide order came down to close, he did. He has bar food he can sell, but where his problem comes in is with the beer that's already on tap."My struggle has been with all of the draft beer," he said. "We're primarily a draft house, and most of my money is in draft inventory."According to the ABC's website, restaurants "selling beer, wine, and pre-mixed drinks or cocktails for consumption off the licensed premises may do so when sold in conjunction with meals prepared for pick-up or delivery. Any such alcoholic beverages must be packaged in a container with a secure lid or cap and in a manner designed to prevent consumption without removal of the lid or cap."Raso said while he appreciates the relaxed restrictions, he's still sitting on at least ,000 in kegs he can't sell."Allow us to repackage the beer from the taps," Raso said.
