SAN DIEGO, CA (KGTV) -- While many sports have made their return during the COVID-19 pandemic, bowling alleys have remained closed.The Mira Mesa Lanes have been a very important part of the Mira Mesa community for years. The bowling alley off Mira Mesa Boulevard has been known for their special needs and senior leagues, and as a spot for youth bowlers to enjoy the game with family and friends.Those who love the Lanes hope it has not seen its last strike."They have probably the biggest, or the second biggest, youth program in the state. We also have a couple of national champions that bowl there," said Marci Greim, who has started a "Save Mira Mesa Lanes" GoFundMe page.Greim, a mother of two young bowlers, said Mira Mesa Lanes has always been a big advocate of college."The kids, just by participating in leagues, have a portion of their dues set aside for college scholarship money. Then, when the kids do well in tournaments, or other things like that, they are earning college scholarship money. Mira Mesa Lanes has just always welcomed the youth bowlers,” said Greim.Mira Mesa Lanes shut down on March 16 due to the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. They reopened for a few weeks in June, but state restrictions forced them to shut down once again.The alley has been closed ever since."So, they are really on the brink," said Greim. (KGTV) - As COVID-19 cases continue to increase nationwide, the demand for testing grows.CVS Pharmacy has been providing free drive-thru testing sites across San Diego County, but some have reported significant delays in receiving test results.“I thought I would try CVS because they’re popping up all over for free testing and very convenient drive-thru,” said San Diego resident Michelle Naidenoff.“It’s a self-administered test, had the test done, was given a sheet originally it said 2-4 days for results, and then they had crossed it out the time of the testing and said it could be up to 10 days.”Ten days later, Naidenoff still had no answers.“Then, on the 16th day, I called, and I was on hold a couple of times,” she said after being left on hold for too long, she hung up.Five hours later, Naidenoff said her negative test result popped up on the online website.“16 days, I’m thinking it’s basically useless,” she said. “When it comes to slowing the virus down, obviously contact tracing is very important. The fact that they would have such poor quality of care for follow up was alarming.”According to CVS, all patient samples collected through the testing sites are sent to off-site locations. The independent, third-party labs are then responsible for processing and delivering the results, according to CVS. SAN DIEGO, California — With recreational marijuana now legal in California, doctors are warning parents to be extra vigilant when checking their kids' candy on Halloween. They worry that the kids may confuse edibles for candy."There's going to be candy all over the house," says Dr. James Elia from Sharp Grossmont Hospital. "If there are edibles that are in the household and are forgotten to put away, kids may be able to get into them as well."State law allows edibles but has strict guidelines for how much THC can be in them. A package can't contain more than 100 milligrams, and each piece can't have more than 10.Marijuana vendors say new rules also make it harder for the edibles to be confused for candy."You cannot use the word candy and animals cannot be in the shape of certain animals and images that might be attractive to children," says Kyle Dukes from Torrey Holistics. He also noted that state law doesn't allow the edibles to be in any shape the State Bureau of Cannabis Control deems "attractive to children." Specifically, they can't be shaped like fruit, animals or lollipops.Packaging for marijuana-infused food must also be child resistant and clearly labeled.Dr. Elia recommends keeping edibles locked away, similar to the way people treat medicine they don't want kids to get. He says the side effects of THC on children could be devastating."They could experience alteration of mental status, sometimes hallucinations, severe anxiety, severe paranoia," he says. "With children, it's also noted shortness of breath."Elia also says parents should be extra vigilant when checking their kids' trick-or-treat candy, to make sure an edible didn't wind up in their collection."We all have to be concerned about this," he says. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - Christmas morning, more than 700 families drove through a toy and food distribution at the Jacobs Center on Euclid Avenue in San Diego. Families were given boxes of food from the San Diego Food Bank, plus every child was able to get out of their car to receive at least three wrapped gifts. There were also free gift cards available.“My little one smiled. He was so happy,” said Elsa Sarabia, a mom of five who drove through.Sarabia said she works as a chef, and both she and her husband have lost hours at work this year. This event meant more gifts for her children that she might not have otherwise been able to afford.“We don’t have a lot of money to buy stuff for the kids and we appreciate everything you do for us,” she said, thanking the organizers.This is the fourth time this event was held. It’s hosted by Shane Harris and the People’s Alliance for Justice, with support from Supervisor Kristin Gaspar and the San Diego Lifeguards.The event had to adapt this year to be safe due to coronavirus, but Harris said they knew they had to make those changes to continue to fill this need. The breakfast would usually take place in a big hall, but organizers designed a drive-through format for 2020.“Really just trying to make sure the needs of the community are met particularly at a time where COVID-19 has made it really difficult for a lot of families economically,” said Harris.One volunteer was dancing through the whole morning as she distributed food, saying she was glad to give up her Christmas morning if it meant helping those in her community who needed it this year."A lot of these people do appear to be in great need. Many are desperately looking for qualified tutors as families safely go back to school. But we found that the demand for tutors is not matching up with what is currently available.As the start of the distance-learning school year approaches, parents are beginning to feel the pressure."Desperate," parent, Cortney Lemos-Crawford laughed. "Desperate because of my own sanity!"Lemos-Crawford says she and her husband are fortunate to still have their jobs during the pandemic. But it is demanding. Distance learning for their 8-year-old daughter in March was not easy."It's very difficult, as you can imagine, to work full-time and have your child present, let alone present and needing your interaction," she said.She says it was hard for her daughter to concentrate at home, in a relaxing environment, with toys all around. She also does not want her daughter's formative years to suffer because of her own work schedule. So for weeks, she has been searching for a personal tutor.Jamie Evans and her partner Hannah Obradovich are former teachers who now run Ignite Learning Center in La Jolla. They provide K through 12 and Special education support around the county."We have been inundated with parents wanting us to form 'Pandemic pods,' garage groups, working outside, working with small groups with different age children to hire us to be their teachers," Evans said.But Evans says the supply of accredited teachers and tutors are not even close to the recent demand from desperate parents."We are in a rush to hire more teachers," Evans said. "I already talked to three people this morning, and I'm going to an interview right now."Lemos-Crawford says her tutor search so far has come up empty."I've had a couple of leads, but those people have been snatched up," she said.But she is not giving up.
