NEW YORK (AP) — J.C. Penney says it is closing 154 stores nationwide in what it is calling the first phase of its efforts to shrink its footprint. According to USA Today, the retailer received bankruptcy court approval on Thursday to begin liquidation sales at stores that are permanently closing. The Plano, Texas-based retailer said it could take about 10 to 16 weeks to complete the closures. “While closing stores is always an extremely difficult decision, our store optimization strategy is vital to ensuring we emerge from both Chapter 11 and the COVID-19 pandemic as a stronger retailer with greater financial flexibility to allow us to continue serving our loyal customers for decades to come,” said Jill Soltau, chief executive officer of JCPenney in a press release. “I am incredibly grateful to our talented associates for their ongoing dedication and their passion for meeting and exceeding our customers’ expectations during this difficult and uncertain time. All impacted associates will be treated with the utmost consideration and respect.”Penney filed for bankruptcy protection last month, making it the biggest retailer to do since the coronavirus pandemic forced non-essential stores to be shut down temporarily. As part of its bankruptcy reorganization, Penney said it planned to permanently close nearly a third of its 846 stores in the next two years. That would leave it with just over 600 locations. 1431
NEW YORK CITY — Despite initially saying work would begin Thursday on a large "Black Lives Matter" mural on New York's Fifth Avenue, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio's office has now said the painting of the mural will be postponed until next week. The mayor said at his daily briefing Thursday that the delay was due to "logistics" and that his office will have more announcements about the project at a later date.De Blasio first announced the mural in late June, saying it would be painted on the famed avenue, right in front of Trump Tower. The location selected intentionally."Painting 'Black Lives Matter outside (President Donald Trump's) home is a message to him that, in fact, black lives do matter, that black people built New York City and they've never been compensated for all they did," de Blasio said.Dozens of cities across the country have painted similar murals on city streets, following in the footsteps of Washington, D.C.President Donald Trump slammed the planned mural Wednesday, calling it a "symbol of hate" in a series of tweets.Trump claimed the mural would be "denigrating this luxury Avenue" and "will further antagonize New York's Finest."De Blasio fired back on Twitter saying, "Black people BUILT 5th Ave and so much of this nation. Your 'luxury' came from THEIR labor, for which they. have never been justly compensated.""We are honoring them. The fact that you see it as denigrating your street is the definition of racism," de Blasio tweeted. On Tuesday night, New York City lawmakers approved an billion budget for 2021. That budget cuts the NYPD funding from the billion the department received in 2020 to about billion. This story was originally published by Anthony DiLorenzo on WPIX in New York City. 1752
New heart health research found that taking a low-dose daily aspirin to cut chances of a heart attack or stroke may have risks that outweigh the benefits. The latest studies revealed the effects of the blood-thinning, anti-inflammatory drug on patients, who did not yet develop heart disease or other heart-related issues but were at moderate risk.Research found aspirin does help patients with diabetes, who are at higher risk to develop or die from heart problems. However, the risk of serious bleeding far outweighed the benefit of taking the drug. The study found aspirin was not effective in preventing heart attacks or strokes for moderate risk patients, because they had other health issues, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol and smoking.Doctors also cautioned using fish oil supplements, instead of aspirin, would have similar disappointing results. Instead, health professionals suggest eating fish to improve your heart’s health.Fish oil may be more beneficial for people who have already suffered a heart attack. 1043
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) - An election worker in New Haven, Connecticut, has tested positive for the coronavirus, leading to a dozen other workers being quarantined. Maritza Bond, the city's public health director, says the infected employee has not been to work since last week after experiencing possible coronavirus symptoms and that offices in City Hall have been disinfected. The 12 people placed in quarantine were temporary employees who spent Tuesday in the city clerk's office counting absentee ballots. City-Town Clerk Michael Smart has asked the secretary of the state's office for support to ensure elections operations are completed Wednesday. 661
NESTOR, Calif. (KGTV) -- Some South Bay neighbors oppose the city of San Diego’s plans to build a sober-living drug treatment facility at the site of a Super 8 Motel in Nestor on Palm Avenue just west of the I-5.The Otay Mesa-Nestor Community Planning Group voted 9-2 Wednesday evening to not recommend the San Diego City Council approve the San Diego Misdemeanants At-Risk Track (SMART) program treatment center at the Super 8 Motel site. RELATED: City plans to house criminals in South Bay HotelResidents at the meeting said they oppose the facility, mostly because it may interfere with plans to revitalize the area in the future. They believe a drug treatment facility will turn investors away.According to the city, there will be counselors on-site, 24-hour security, and strict rules.According to the City Attorney’s website, “SMART prioritizes chronic misdemeanor offenders with acute drug addictions and complex social service needs. These offenders have one or more drug offenses since Proposition 47 took effect in 2014, and have been arrested at least twice in the past six months for a quality-of-life offense.” 1141
