Jeff Marquise is taking small steps in distance, but he's making huge strides for science.Eight years ago, Marquise was paralyzed from a mountain biking accident.“It was a gap jump and I sort of just rolled over it and went over the handlebars on the other side of the jump and came down right on my head,” he recalls. “I sustained a C5 and C6 burst fracture.” Those injuries left Marquise unable to walk. Now, with the help of new technology and old-school physical training, he is leaving his wheelchair and walking again. “No one thought I could stand up on my own or step on my own,” he says. “So, being able to do it with the implant has brought some hope back to the equation.” The implant is an epidural stimulator that’s embedded near the spinal cord. Electricity then triggers the nervous system which can help restore brain-to-spine connectivity. Researchers at the Kentucky Spinal Cord Injury Research Center at the University of Louisville are calling this a scientific breakthrough.“It gives us hope that we know now that the spinal cord has this capability,” says Claudia Angeli, Ph.D., of the University of Louisville. “So, it’s a matter of being able to tap into that.”While Angeli is not calling this a quick fix for paralysis, she is finding excellent results.“You can actually see that activation of the muscles,” she says. “It’s the spinal cord responding to information. So, the more activity the more responsive or the more excitable the spinal cord is.”That excitement can be felt across the country.A recent study by the Christopher and Dana Reeve foundation discovered that there are nearly 1 in 50 people living with paralysis in the United States. That breaks down to about 5.4 million people, or the combined populations of Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Washington, DC.“It is life changing,” Marquise says. “But I’m always careful not to oversell it. It’s not walking around the house doing chores.”While being brutally honest, Marquise says he’s also very happy to get back on his feet again. “When you first get hurt, a lot of people are told that they are not going to be able to walk again,” he says. “So, being able to do it in this setting has brought a ray a hope for me and other people.” 2235

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A Florida man's good deed is not going unnoticed after he bought over 100 generators and food to send to the Bahamas. Alec Sprague, who lives in Jacksonville, said he went a Costco to buy a generator, and saw a man purchasing over 100 of them. Sprague said the man was buying the generators and food to send to the Bahamas. In a Facebook post, Sprague stated, "Was just in Costco off Collins getting a generator (at 0 each) and this guy right here is purchasing over 100 generators and food to send to the Bahamas! All I could do was shake his hand and thank him! There still are good people in the world!" To help donate, 659

In a speech from the Senate floor Thursday, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) slammed the House's adoption of articles of impeachment as a "predetermined end" to a "partisan crusade," but did not give any specifics about the impending trial to be held in the Senate.McConnell's statement comes hours after the House of Representatives voted to impeach President Donald Trump in a vote that was largely along party lines. All but two Democrats voted in favor of the articles; no Republicans voted in favor.McConnell warned the impeachment risked "deeply damaging" institutions in the United States and claimed it could open the door for more partisan impeachments in the future."If the Senate blesses this historically low bar (of impeachment), we will invite the impeachment of every future president," McConnell said.Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York), responded shortly thereafter, claiming McConnell failed to offer a defense for President Trump's actions in McConnell's 30-minute speech.Schumer also slammed Trump's decision to not participate in impeachment proceedings, and said Democrats would welcome the Trump administration to offer their own defense."Why is (McConnell) so afraid of relevant witnesses and documents?" Scumer said. "...can none of the president's men come defend him under oath?"McConnell also claimed that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was "afraid" to send the articles of impeachment over to the Senate for a trial. Pelosi said Wednesday night that the House would delay sending the articles to the Senate until she could get assurances that the Senate would hold a fair trial.Last week, McConnell told news outlets that he is openly conferring with White House counsel on defenses for Trump. The comments sparked a call among Democrat lawmakers for McConnell to recuse himself during the Senate trial. 1866

In the wake of the death of an eight-year-old boy while in custody of Customs and Border Protection, the agency announced a series of policy changes on Tuesday night.First, Border Patrol is conducting secondary medical checks on all children in CBP care and custody with a particular focus on children under 10.Second, Border Patrol is working with Immigration and Customs Enforcement on available surge options for transportation to Family Residential Centers and supervised release, CBP said. The agency also is reviewing other custody options to relieve capacity issues in the El Paso sector, such as working with nongovernmental organizations or local partners for temporary housing.Third, CBP is considering options for medical assistance with other governmental partners, the agency said. That could include support from the Coast Guard, as well as possibly more aid from the Department of Defense, FEMA, Health and Human Services, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Finally, CBP is reviewing its policies with a particular focus on the care and custody of children under 10, both at intake and beyond 24 hours in custody, the agency said.On Tuesday, Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-Texas) offered his condolences to the boy's family and called for a congressional investigation of the death."While the CBP notified Congress within 24 hours as mandated by law, we must ensure that we treat migrants and asylum-seekers with human dignity and provide the necessary medical care to anyone in the custody of the United States government," he said in the statement.Guatemala's Foreign Ministry in a statement Tuesday also asked for an investigation and access to the boy's medical records. The ministry said CBP alerted Guatemalan officials of the death on Tuesday. The boy arrived in El Paso with his father December 18 and was transferred to the Alamogordo CBP station on Sunday, according to the statement."The cause of death of the minor is still being investigated and the medical records have been requested in order to help clarify the cause of death," the statement said.Guatemala's Consul General in Phoenix, Oscar Padilla Lam, met with the boy's father in Almagordo to "hear his version of the facts," according to the statement. The Foreign Ministry said it will provide assistance and consular protection to the father and assume responsibility for the repatriation of the boy's remains. The CBP news release says the Department of Homeland Security is experiencing "a dramatic increase in unaccompanied children and family units arriving at our borders illegally or without authorization," and per law, holds such individuals at federal facilities until they are deported or released into the United States with a notice to appear in court."During their period of detention they received medical screenings and further treatment as needed," it said. 2879
