BEIJING, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- China's railways will carry 235 million passengers during the 40-day Spring Festival travel rush, up 6.1 percent year-on-year, the Ministry of Railways said Friday.A daily average of 5.88 million people will make trains trips from Jan. 8 to Feb. 16, the ministry said in a statement on its website.Economic hubs such as Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai and Hangzhou and the inland provinces of Sichuan, Hubei, Jiangxi, Anhui and Hunan will see the most activity during the period, as millions of rural migrant workers and students head home for family reunions, according to the statement.The ministry has arranged for extra trains in anticipation of the rush, the statement said, but added that "the conflict remains between passenger demand and railway capacity."Railway authorities have long been under pressure to increase capacity and improve ticketing services, as many citizens find it extremely hard to secure a single ticket during major holidays.The ministry has begun allowing customers to book their tickets online or by phone to ease the ordeal of buying tickets. BEIJING, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) -- China has launched a one-year inter-agency national campaign aiming to return most street children home, the Ministry of Civil Affairs (MCA) said Monday.The MCA will lead the campaign, which is joined by the ministries of education, public security, financial, health, human resources and social security, and housing and urban-rural development, an MCA statement said."We will try our best to identify most street children in cities and send them home by the end of 2012," the statement said.Minister Li Liguo of Civil Affairs said, ministries concerned should strengthen communication and coordination, and speed up the revision of regulations on the relief of city beggars and vagrants.The MCA also urged provincial governments to set up special offices coordinating the campaign. Several provinces, such as Hebei and Yunnan, have been working on this, the statement said.Police will step up their efforts to identify and rescue street children who wander near railway stations, major tourist sites, business areas and subway stops, while civil affairs departments will assist investigation and provide shelter for homeless children, the statement said.Urban communities and neighborhoods are asked by the ministry to report homeless children to local police. Police and civil affairs departments will cooperate to ascertain the whereabouts of their parents or guardians.In home places of street children, education departments are urged to send them to schools or vocational schools, and those from needy families will have their tuition reduced or waived.Health departments are required to offer street children easy access to medical facilities in emergency cases. Hospitals listed in the campaign will treat sick street children free of charge.

QINGDAO, Shandong, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) -- China's largest rail vehicle maker, CSR Corp. Ltd, over the weekend launched its first test train that features speeds reaching up to 500 km per hour.The six-car train with a fairshaped head is the newest in the CRH series. It has a maximum tractive power of 22,800 kilowatts, compared with 9,600 kilowatts for the CRH380 trains currently in service on the Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway, which hold the world speed record of 300 km per hour.The grey-color train carrying testing and data processing facilities was designed and produced by CSR Sifang Locomotive & Rolling Stock Co., Ltd (Sifang Locomotive), a CSR subsidiary based in the coastal city of Qingdao in eastern Shandong province.Ding Sansan, the company's chief technician, said the concept of the the super-speed train design was inspired by China's ancient sword. The bodywork uses plastic materials reinforced with carbon fiber.Shen Zhiyun, a locomotive expert and academician with both the Chinese academies of sciences and engineering, said the testing of the super-speed train with speeds of up to 500 km per hour will provide useful reference for current high-speed railway operations.

WASHINGTON, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- The use of acupuncture for children is common and acupuncture is generally safe for children when performed by "appropriately trained practitioners," Canadian researchers reported Monday in online journal Pediatrics.Researchers at the University of Alberta looked at data from 37 studies of needle acupuncture, spanning 60 years, on children from birth to age 17, and assessed the association between needle acupuncture and various levels of adverse events in children. They found that of 279 adverse events identified, 253 were mild, one was moderate and 25 were serious.Serious side effects included bleeding, infections, and heart and lung problems. One child may have contracted HIV. But the researchers said the serious side effects were related to substandard conditions from the care provider, rather than acupuncture's technique itself. They concluded that in trained hands, pediatric acupuncture is safe.Acupuncture has been around for thousands of years, and traditional Chinese theory suggests needle placement helps balance the body's energy flow, called "qi". Acupuncture is sometimes used to treat headaches, migraines, back and joint pains, cramps, and chemotherapy-induced nausea. Estimates show 150,000 U.S. children undergo acupuncture each year.
