CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) - Two political opponents running against each other for the Coronado City Council have formed a special bond which they refuse to let be ruined by the campaign."She's my opponent, but I love my opponent. She's like a mother to me," says candidate Derik Mundt about fellow candidate Mary Sikes.The two have been friendly since Mundt was a teenager volunteering for the Coronado Film Festival, which Sikes ran until her retirement this year. However, they did not realize when they decided to run that they would be doing so against the other."She's a saint," Mundt said. "When you're sick, she brings you soup. That's what she does. She's like the mom of Coronado."Mundt recently found out how true those sentiments were. Last week he began feeling sick, with a fever topping 102. It turned out to be a case of the flu so bad, he was taken to the emergency room. Mundt ended up hospitalized for five days. One of his first calls was to Sikes."My first thought was just to get there and just be there," Sikes said.Sikes visited Mundt in the hospital each day and stayed in touch with his mother to update her on his status. When it became clear he would not be released in time for the final candidate forum in the race, Sikes made a surprising offer."You've come this far and it's so close," she told Mundt. "I'll give your speech tomorrow because I know it by heart."When Mundt was finally released from the hospital Monday afternoon, it was Sikes who came to pick him up and drive him home."Dirty politics don't belong in politics," Mundt says. "This is how it's supposed to be."There are six total candidates running for two open seats on the Coronado City Council, meaning it's possible Mundt and Sikes could both win or lose."What we've been saying to each other all along is if at least one of us gets on, we know that this town will be in good hands," Sikes said. 1917

College enrollment is dropping sharply among high school seniors.A new report finds the number of students who immediately went on to college this year fell by nearly 22% on average.Breaking that down by area, under-served communities have been hit hardest, nearly a 30% drop for low-income high schools and 33% for high poverty high schools.The National College Attainment Network funded the research. They tell us students lost access to support networks when schools went virtual.And then, many students in communities hit hardest by COVID-19 didn't have a choice other than to get a job and support their families.“They get used to that. Their families get used to that. Their families need that from them, and it makes the idea of thinking about college later in life after high school graduation all the more impossible,” said Kim Cook, Executive Director at the National College Attainment Network.The group's biggest message is to stay engaged.It's not too late to apply for federal student aid, like the Pell Grant or subsidized student loans.There are online resources through the U.S. Department of Education and platforms like the Common App that offer chat options to answer questions.Even just a couple classes at a community college will help keep you on track. You can also reach out to institutions you previously applied to but felt like you couldn't go to. Talk to the financial aid office about how your circumstances have changed.“This is all about making it an open conversation and reaching out to those supports and telling them you'd like to enroll and asking them to help you make that happen and what kind of options you have now,” said Cook.The data suggests that declining college enrollment will not only continue, but possibly get worse next fall.This time of year, current seniors should be focusing on keeping grades up and writing essays for applications. 1897

CLEVELAND - This story proves just about anyone can get scammed. A man from Oberlin, Ohio said even though he's an experienced buyer and seller of cars online, criminals got him."You never thought you'd be a victim of a scam like this,” we asked Derrick Macarthy. “Never,” Macarthy told us.He isn't some dumb guy who fell for a scam. “The eBay Motors page looked official,” he remembered.Macarthy was looking for a van, found one on Craigslist. It was 00 and to him that’s a lot of money. "I don't have 00 to just throw away," he told us.The seller sent him a note saying the husband supposedly died 5 months ago. "They told me they had just moved to another state and that they were dealing with eBay Motors," said Macarthy.He wasn't familiar with eBay Motors, but he went to Rite Aid anyway. He bought a half-dozen eBay gift cards and gave the crooks the numbers. Then, he even got a message from them saying "I'm sure you will love this car...take good care of it…I loved this car very much.""They're good, huh?” we asked.“They are. So, buyers beware," Macarthy replied.Beware because Macarthy got another message 30 minutes later saying they needed a thousand dollars more to ship the car to him. Macarthy knew, though, the ad said no shipping fee. So, the red flags went up and called eBay."When you hear, 'You've been scammed,' what goes through your mind?” we asked him.“I just hit the floor,” said Macarthy. He was devastated. He has a family that needs a van. Plus, he never suspected anything because he's bought and sold cars with honest people on Craigslist in the past. "I put the ad on there. (Buyers) responded. Money, title, and keys were exchanged and everybody was happy. (That’s) not how it happened this time."Macarthy said he went to local police but they don't have the resources to track down the scammers who stole his money. "I wish there was some way to get that back,” he told us.eBay Motors has a big warning that even highlights Craigslist for scams like this. The examples include scammers using eBay gift cards.The Better Business Bureau also has warnings and advice.Macarthy has his own suggestions for you. "Things can look very, very real and be the total opposite. So, just be careful."eBay Motors suggests you tell the seller that you'll pay when you pick up the car. CINCINNATI -- While their fellow incoming college students enjoyed Freshman Welcome Week, Natalie Vasu and Kiley Hatfield spent much of their first week at the University of Cincinnati sitting inside at Turner Schneider Hall. Their new dorm room had a broken shower head, broken locks and a thermostat on the fritz, and at least one person needed to be around to greet the repair teams who came to fix them.Those issues were irritating but all had quick solutions, Vasu said. The mold they discovered near four outlets in the room didn't."There were water dripping stains down the outlet," Vasu said. "We're lucky when we went and plugged things in that nothing caught fire or went wrong."The university immediately removed the girls -- Vasu, Hatfield and their two roommates -- from their room and offered them new rooms. Separate ones. Hatfield said she and Vasu were determined to stay together, and after hours of begging, the university agreed to put them up in a hotel as a pair. It's still a short-term fix. The girls don't know what their long-term living situation might be."We don't have a permanent option," Hatfield said. "We have no idea where we're supposed to go."M.B. Reilly, the university's director of public relations, said staff have worked to quickly address all of the issues Hatfield and Vasu raised. The malfunctioning thermostat was replaced within days; the broken shower head was replaced the same Saturday morning they reported it.They will continue to work with the pair to find an acceptable place for them to live."In support of our students, university staff will personally be reviewing alternative UC housing options with them and their parents shortly," Reilly said in a statement.She added no other students in their building had experienced comparable issues. 1820

COVINGTON, Kentucky — The Kenton County, Kentucky Sheriff’s Office agreed to a 7,000 settlement with the families of two elementary students handcuffed by school resource officers in 2014, according to the American Civil Liberties Union.The children were handcuffed above the elbow behind their backs for misbehavior which the Children’s Law Center said was related to disabilities. The Children’s Law Center and ACLU filed a lawsuit against the sheriff’s office in 2015 over the incidents.The ACLU claimed the handcuffings were in violation of the students’ rights. The Covington students -- a boy and a girl -- both had attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, histories of trauma and other disabilities, according to the lawsuit.Video of a boy handcuffed and squirming in a chair even got the attention of the U.S. Department of Justice, which also investigated the school district’s disciplinary practices after the lawsuit was filed. Although the independent investigation did not find the district guilty of wrongdoing, the Department of Justice said that the Americans with Disabilities Act applies to school resource officers, and school policies should dissuade the "school-to-prison pipeline" created by criminalizing misbehavior.In 2017, Covington Independent Public Schools agreed to a settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice and a new set of guidelines for disciplining children with disabilities.Later that year, a federal judge found that it was unconstitutional for school resource officers to handcuff the children.According to the ACLU, “both children had repeated nightmares, started bed-wetting, and would not let their mothers out of their sight,” after the handcuffings.WCPO televisions station in Cincinnati reached out to the Kenton County Sheriff’s Office for comment but has not heard back. 1860
