Demonstrations played out across the country on Thursday, often echoing the same themes of “Black Lives Matter” and “No Justice, No Peace” following Monday’s death of George Floyd, a black Minnesota man who died in police custody. In cities big and small across the United States, people aggravated with the criminal justice system aired their grievances. Many protests remained nonviolent, even as protesters claimed that peace was not an option until justice in their eyes is served. The justice that protesters sought did not come on Thursday.Three days after Floyd’s death, federal and state investigators said now is not the time to press charges against the officers who held Floyd, despite calls from the mayor of Minneapolis, Floyd's brother, and others. Derek Chauvin, a now fired Minneapolis police officer, held a knee against Floyd’s neck for several minutes, despite pleas from Floyd and bystanders. Floyd died moments later. The incident has been seen by millions following a now viral video circulating social media. When asked why the video was not enough evidence to produce probable cause for a criminal charge against, Chauvin Hennepin County Attorney Michael Freeman told reporters, “There is other evidence that doesn’t support a criminal charge.”Within hours, police and protesters clashed in dozens of cities. In Columbus, reporters for WSYX-TV reported that protesters shattered windows of the Ohio Capitol, as well as the Ohio Theater. The station said a news vehicle was also damaged amid the protests. In Denver, police confirmed that several gun shots were fired amid protests. Also, a protester was run over by a car that sped through demonstrations. In Louisville, police there fired tear gas at protesters late on Thursday. Similar scenes played out in other cities across the US. President Donald Trump tweeted late on Thursday, blaming local politicians in Minnesota for the unrest. "I can’t stand back & watch this happen to a great American City, Minneapolis," Trump said. "A total lack of leadership. Either the very weak Radical Left Mayor, Jacob Frey, get his act together and bring the City under control, or I will send in the National Guard & get the job done right."These THUGS are dishonoring the memory of George Floyd, and I won’t let that happen. Just spoke to Governor Tim Walz and told him that the Military is with him all the way. Any difficulty and we will assume control but, when the looting starts, the shooting starts. Thank you!"In a CNN interview, Philonise Floyd, George Floyd’s brother called for peace, but added, “I know firing them that was the first step, but they can go in another county and get a job. But what I'm seeking is that because they executed my brother. I want justice. You know, I want an arrest for all four of those officers tonight. A murder conviction for all four of those officers.”Earlier on Thursday, Rev. Al Sharpton also tried to call on protests to remain nonviolent. “We're all angry, but we use our anger in a different way,” Sharpton said. “But when I got here, someone said to me, are you going to address the violence? The violence I'm addressing is how a man could hold a man down with a knee on his neck for nine minutes. That's when the violence started."Here are some of the scenes from around the US:Flags on fire outside the 3344

Experts say when it comes to drug treatment and recovery, there really isn’t one right answer. But a group in Dayton, Ohio, believes some of the best help can come from those who’ve been through the fight already.“I was there, I was desperate,” said Waldo Littlejohn.“I lost a nephew and a sister to this epidemic,” said Kevin Kerley.” So it’s personal to me.”"I ended up DOA for 23 minutes,” Erica Gross said. The Dayton Fellowship Club, for many, is a house of hope. They help people dealing with substance abuse disorders. The only thing they need to have to walk through the door is a desire to stop using. “In the last four-to have five years it’s really gotten worse,” Kerley said of the opioid epidemic in Dayton.Gross attributes the issue, at least in part, to doctors.“I think a lot of it does have to do with the doctor, doctors prescribe it,” Gross said. “I know for me, that’s something I’ve just now realized is that’s what kind of kicked off a lot of things for me.”Littlejohn adds there are other factors as well.“It can be attributed to lack of jobs, it can be attributed to poverty, there’s a lot of things that can contribute to that,” he said.Kerley said it’s taken over the community he’s known his whole life.“It’s taken over our community,” he said. “I was born and raised in this area and I’ve seen the devastation that it’s done. The kids and the housing and the deaths the plight of the neighborhood, it’s just destroying our home.” Littlejohn has been in recover for 21 years.Having been through the fight himself, he says the country is facing a gigantic challenge in the face of the opioid crisis.“The people coming through this door now are getting younger and younger, but they are still coming, they are still looking for help,” Kerley said. “That means there’s still hope in this community.”Littlejohn agrees.“I’m very hopeful,” he said. “I’m very enthused about it. Our motto is, ‘hope is found here.’ ” “Now people are starting to recognize it,” Kerley said. “It’s sad that it took all of the deaths and it took us becoming No. 1in the state of Ohio for opioid overdoses for people to recognize that the need for help is here.” 2172

During an hour-long press conference at the White House on Tuesday, officials with the Trump administration floated a plan in which they would send cash directly to citizens "within two weeks" in an attempt to boost the economy amid the coronavirus pandemic.Treasury Sec. Steve Mnuchin did not go into specifics about the plan, and said more details would be released in the coming hours and days. Mnuchin added that should such a program go into effect, it would likely be sent to lower- and middle-class Americans within two weeksWhen asked about a plan based on the payroll tax, President Donald Trump said his administration preferred sending cash to individuals directly because it would more quickly boost the economy. Trump later said his administration could also still include a payroll tax as part of their stimulus package, or a combination of cash payments and payroll tax.Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) is among the lawmakers who have 955

DENVER — While riding on two wheels, bicyclist Mike Stejskal has one goal: safety. The long-time bike rider knows how sketchy sharing the streets with cars can be.“The traffic volume is too high and it's stressful interacting with all the cars.,” Stejskal said while riding. "There’s way more chill routes." So before going out for a spin, Stejskal maps out at all the routes that will get him to where he’s going in the least amount of danger.“To me, I don’t understand why we would pick as the same place to send cyclists down as buses,” he said.
