The holiday shopping season got off to a hot start on Friday as consumers flooded into stores and logged onto e-commerce sites in search of deals.Real-time figures from Mastercard show that overall sales are poised to hit billion on Black Friday alone. Adobe reported that the Nintendo Switch is the most popular item online, and Sadove said the new line of digital assistants and smart home products are attracting buyers.The strong holiday sales are being fueled in part by a healthy economy, which features low unemployment and some gains in average income. High levels of consumer confidence also help.In addition, the calendar is favorable for a strong holiday shopping season. Thanksgiving came earlier this year, and Christmas falls on a Tuesday. That schedule is expected to result in Sunday December 23 sales that match Black Friday sales figures.Without Toys "R" Us, which went out of business this past year, many retailers are looking for a toy boost.Sadove refers to as a "land grab" of retailers trying to up their toy offerings as a way to attract shoppers.Beyond the leaders - Walmart, Target and Amazon - Best Buy is also making a major push to sell toys. The production company behind the American version of the Russian state-funded network RT has officially filed as a foreign agent with the Department of Justice.T&R Productions LLC formally registered on November 10 as an agent of ANO TV-Novosti, described in the forms as a non-governmental organization "under Russian Federation law," which has principal "responsibility for creating a TV network that will be competitive with other TV networks operating around the world." The DOJ identified ANO TV-Novosti as the "Russian government entity responsible for the worldwide broadcasts of the RT Network"In its announcement, the DOJ said T&R Productions LLC "has operated studios for RT, hired and paid all U.S.-based RT employees, and produced English-language programming for RT, which is both shown on cable networks across the United States and available on RT's website."The DOJ announced the registration and published the forms on Monday. The National Security Division's FARA Registration Unit is reviewing T&R's filings for sufficiency, the DOJ said."Americans have a right to know who is acting in the United States to influence the U.S. government or public on behalf of foreign principals," Acting Assistant Attorney General for National Security Dana J. Boente said in a statement on Monday. "The Department of Justice is committed to enforcing FARA and expects compliance with the law by all entities engaged in specified activities on behalf of any foreign principal, regardless of its nationality."The filing comes after weeks of public pronouncements and increasing tension between Russia and the U.S. over media outlets in the two countries. RT said after initially skipping its October deadline to register under FARA, they were forced to file or their employees could face imprisonment and have their assets seized. While this is technically true under the law, harsh enforcements under Foreign Agents Registration Act are rare, experts say.The DOJ's registration request has prompted Russian officials to retaliate by threatening to enforce harsher restrictions against American news organizations operating in Russia, especially government-funded outlets such as Radio Free Europe and its television sister network Current Time.The filing was made under news director Mikhail Solodovnikov, a former reporter for a Russian TV outlet who said in the forms that he is a U.S. citizen by marriage. He listed his salary as 0,000 a year. He is the sole member and owner over the LLC and produces the various shows for ANO TV-Novosti, according to the filing.Solodovnikov disputed the need for the FARA registration in the filing."The production of shows remains under the independent editorial control of registrant," he wrote. "Registrant respectfully disagrees that FARA should apply."T&R confirms in the paperwork that ANO TV-Novosti is financed by a foreign entity, but the production company also said on the forms that it was not "sufficiently aware" of who controls or funds the NGO.In the filing, Solodovnikov wrote that he does not see RT as political actors, saying that the "primary purpose of T&R Productions LLC is to produce news, talk show, and entertainment programs that are designed merely to inform, not influence. Programs produced cover a broad range of news and talk show topics, reflect balance regarding commentary, and are not aimed to primarily benefit any foreign government or political party."RT was singled out in a January intelligence community report for the impact it may have had on the 2016 U.S. election. The report said RT "conducts strategic messaging for [the] Russian government" and "seeks to influence politics, [and] fuel discontent in the U.S." The report also mentioned a separate Russian-government-controlled website Sputnik as "another government-funded outlet producing pro-Kremlin radio and online content."Federal investigators are also reportedly looking into whether Russian government-funded outlets such as RT and Sputnik were part of Russia's influence campaign aimed at the 2016 presidential election. Yahoo News has separately reported that the FBI interviewed a former Sputnik correspondent about his work at the website.Russian government officials, including President Vladimir Putin said they'd take a "tit for tat" measure against American outlets in Russia in retaliation for the pressure on RT. Last week Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that new action against American outlets would come this week. 4546

The number of people filing for unemployment for the first time is dropping slightly. Just over 800,000 people filed last week, which is less than what was expected. For perspective, only about 287,000 filed the same time last year.The total number of people still receiving some kind of benefits is just under 21 million. Meanwhile, some people who do have jobs are leaving a lot of money on the table in 2020.“If you don’t take time off, you are basically giving the company back almost a paycheck, like here you go, here's my one-week salary,” said Vicki Salemi, Monster Career Expert.Career website Monster found almost half of workers didn't take their full paid time off this year.The pandemic turned work life balance into an all-at-home blended mess for many. Many workers said they didn't take their time because there was nothing to do, nowhere to go, or they were worried about their jobs.Only a small amount of workers are able to rollover their unused time into 2021.Taking time off has been especially critical this year.“You can see things more clearly. You may even be happier thinking about your time off even if that just meant you stayed on your living room couch and binged the latest show,” said Salemi.Some employers, like Monster, even added mental health or additional days off this year, recognizing the extreme stress many were under.Salemi says even if you don’t have big plans for your time away from work, create some sort of framework.“It doesn't have to be rigid, but just so you feel like at the end of the day or the end of the time off, you don’t want to feel like it was for not, like its OK if you're just going to rest this whole time,” said Salemi.If you didn't get in all that paid time this year, depending on your circumstance, it’s worth asking to see if you could carry some over into next year.Now is also a good time to plan for 2021. It’s a government run medical research agency, and about 7,000 scientists work in its research laboratories looking for new ways to improve health and save lives.Next year, more than billion in taxpayer dollars will be spent here to find treatments and cures for the biggest health issues in the country, including heart disease, cancer and Alzheimer’s.Right now, there are about 1,600 research studies in progress.Dr. Larissa Korde is part of one of those studies, working to help find the latest breakthrough in breast cancer.She says the work done at NIH has a proven track record.“Women with her2 positive breast cancer now have numerous effective therapies and tend to live longer than they did before those drugs were evaluated and came to the market,” Dr. Korde explains. “And our research has been involved all along the way.”               With each new study, doctors continue to learn more and hope the next discovery will help save more lives.   1112

The pandemic forced us all to make changes to how we work and learn. It also forced trade schools to find new ways to teach people their crafts.Students who attend Laguna College of Art and Design in California spend a large amount of time in a studio setting, at least they did.When the pandemic hit, faculty had to find a way to create the studio experience virtually.Some of the challenges have been giving students feedback, allowing them to see the work of fellow students and the dialogue that comes with it.“These types of interactions, they're intuitive, they're organic, they flow,” said Hope Railey, chair of fine arts at LCAD. “It’s just part of the day, so now those types of interactions need to be planned.”Railey says 6-hour studio classes take faculty 12 hours or more to put together.She says instructors use pre-recorded lectures and lessons so they can do one-on-one meetings with students.She admits it’s a work in progress, but says students are getting invaluable life lessons through all of it.“They're experiencing some of what life is like after a BFA program,” said Railey. “They're experiencing some of the challenges and kind of facing those challenges and the good thing is, they're getting services and help, like detailed granular help.”Railey says students are helping themselves by asking more questions about how to do things once they finish school, like how to do certain research.She also says doing classes over Zoom allowed the school to bring in artists and speakers they wouldn't normally be able to use. 1553
