MILWAUKEE — Christopher R. Ward has been charged with second-degree reckless homicide in the death of 14-year-old Jada Wright. Police responded to the scene late last Wednesday night at their home on the city's northwest side. According to police, Jada has cerebral palsy, and Ward was her personal care worker. Initially, the 18-year-old defendant reported to police that Jada had complications with her feeding earlier that night. He said was not involved in her death, and claimed she had a history of injuring herself.Jada's school physical therapist said she never saw Jada injure herself. She also said Jada was missing from school for a month.Ward was taken into custody after an autopsy revealed blunt force trauma to her abdomen. After further questioning, Ward admitted he had become frustrated with the girl while trying to feed her through her feeding tube. She had maneuvered her tube out of her stomach, frustrating him further. In response, he punched her in the stomach. Ward reconnected her tube and left the room. Upon returning, he saw she had vomited on herself, and did not seek additional care for her or tell first responders about his actions.    1207

Nate Silver announced Tuesday that his analytics-based politics and sports site, FiveThirtyEight, will now be operated by ABC News. The site was previously owned and operated ESPN. Both ESPN and ABC News are owned by the same parent company, Disney.Silver, the site's editor-in-chief, also tweeted that the site would continue to cover sports and that ESPN would still showcase the site's sports content."We're super excited to work with @ABC and combine our strengths with theirs as we tackle the 2018 and 2020 elections and other news stories," Silver tweeted.ABC News also confirmed the news on Tuesday afternoon.FiveThirtyEight's move comes at a turbulent time for ESPN. The company recently hired a new president, Jimmy Pitaro, after former president John Skipper resigned following a cocaine extortion attempt. ESPN has also lost millions of cable subscriptions as consumers have begun favoring streaming services over traditional cable packages.FiveThirtyEight was founded in 2008 with the goal of using analytical data to cover sports and politics. The site has won praise for further analytics in sports coverage and correctly predicting the outcomes of all 50 states during the 2012 presidential election. However, the site failed to correctly predict the outcome of the 2016 election, and gave then-candidate Donald Trump just a 29 percent chance to win the electoral college on the morning of Election Day. 1440

NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (KGTV) -- A mother of three shown in a video being detained by Customs and Border Protection agents was released Tuesday on her own recognizance.Shortly after 9 p.m. Perla Morales-Luna and her daughters shared a tearful reunion. A judge said that Morales-Luna, 36, isn’t a danger to society or a flight risk. During the family's reunion, she did say "Thank you" to the press but had no further comment. The video showing Luna’s detention made rounds on social media earlier in March. The video shows Luna being arrested by agents in National City.RELATED: Video of border agents' arrest of mom in National City sparks outrageLuna’s daughters can be heard screaming in the background of the video as their mother is placed into the back of a Border Patrol vehicle. In response to the video, authorities said Luna was detained due to accusations that she runs a criminal smuggling organization in East County.Authorities added that Luna is in the U.S. illegally and is expected to be deported. The case will now go before federal court in San Diego.*This is a developing story. 10News will have the latest tonight on 10News at 11 p.m.  1177

Millions of small, black cerith snails cover one area of Fort De Soto Beach, Florida, stunning wildlife lovers. The shellfish, known as cerith snails, cover nearly the entire length of the beach. Robert Neff snapped several pictures of the bizarre event. “I grew up in Florida and I’ve never seen anything like this. It was amazing to see,” he said. What makes this so odd is Cerith snails don’t typically wash up onto land. They’re usually along the bottom of the ocean in flat reefs or hiding in coral reefs where the temperature is warm. The snails are in an area off the south end of the parking lot at Fort DeSoto’s North beach, which borders the bird sanctuary. Neff said the low tide exposed the snails over the weekend, and many are still at the beach. His photographs, along with video taken by Mark Freels of See Through Adventures, have been widely shared across social media. One former research assistant from the Georgia Sea Turtle Center said it's possible the snails came to the shallow waters because they found food, which was washed up by recent hurricanes, on the beach. Freels said it was a very strange and magnificent sight.“My job is to take people on kayak adventures and you never know what you’ll find. This was very interesting to see,” he said. 1330

MOUNDS, Okla. — Logan Phillips said he was inspired during the teacher walkout and signed up to run for Oklahoma's House District 24 seat on a whim.Phillips figured he would lose, but began legwork for a campaign in 2020. His opponent was 10-year incumbent Steve Kouplan, the Democratic minority leader."I didn't think I had a chance going against Goliath. He could outspend me, out-market me and do pretty much anything when it came to money. So it was just me talking to people," Phillips said.Phillips sat at Mamadou's Restaurant in Glenpool, Oklahoma by himself to watch the results come in on election night. He said even his wife went home early. But the Republican stayed neck in neck with the incumbent all evening."Then the polls and stuff actually went down. So they stopped reporting for about 10 minutes and we were stuck on the last four counties. I was losing within half a point. Then they all came in at the same time and I went up and won by 350 votes," Phillips said.Phillips said he spoke with a couple other lawmakers and put a few posts on social media. That was the extent of his campaign."Straight party voting was huge for the Republican party. They came out and they wanted the Republicans in and I was the Republican. That accounted for 50-something percent of my votes," Phillips said. The representative-elect is a teacher at Tulsa Community College. His father, sister and stepmother are also educators. The family tells KJRH they're excited for new faces at the state capitol."I'm certainly anticipating some great changes. That we could go from being the last in something to being the first in something. The first to see the dramatic change in betterment for all the people, not just the big businesses of the state," Phillips said. The Republican will represent south of Mounds down to Okmulgee. 1870
