We're in some strange times right now and it may be hard to tell if it's appropriate to ask for a raise at work. Career experts say it's all about reading the room.“If your company has decided to freeze bonuses and they've laid off or furloughed people, you should still have a conversation with your boss about where that means your compensation will currently be, but you may not go into a nitty gritty negotiation conversation,” said Vicki Salemi, a career expert at Monster.com.If your company is doing well, has been able to keep employees, and has offered different work from home options, then it's fair game to begin negotiating with your manager.Make sure you walk into the conversation informed, though. Do your research on what someone with your experience and your location should make. And most importantly, don't start this conversation over email. Simply ask your manager if they have 15 minutes for a video chat and talk to them face to face.In the case where maybe a raise isn't possible right now, be open to negotiating about perks instead.“In addition to compensation, you can ask for additional personal time and perhaps you can also ask for extended working from home arrangements, after the pandemic or different arrangements, where you can have different things reimbursed to you that they previously didn't approve,” said Salemi. If both a raise and perks are denied, see if there's a chance those could happen later. If not, experts say it could be time to start looking for a job outside the company that will pay you your worth. 1562

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Since the start of his presidency, President Donald Trump and his administration have talked about getting manufacturing companies to come back to the United States, a process known as reshoring. Now, with unemployment at a historic high, another 1.5 million people filing jobless claims last week and still 19.5 million continued claims or people unemployed, the idea of reshoring is being revisited by Congress. Some on Capitol Hill are proposing reshoring incentives for companies in the next stimulus package.“There are a lot of potential ways that the administration and Congress could come up with tax subsidies and tax breaks for companies that produces here,” said Ed Yardeni, an economist and the president of Yardeni Research. While believes there could be some jobs created by companies reshoring in the U.S., it’s hard to say how many. That’s partly because, many companies that would consider reshoring would also consider using artificial intelligence at their production plants.“Clearly bringing back jobs would be great, but I don’t think we go back to the 70s and 80s, where we had a lot more people employed,” Yardeni added. “I would think that if you are reshoring and bring production back to the U.S., you are going to use state of the art technology to do that, so I’m not sure it is going to be a huge win-win in terms of jobs.”Experts, including Yardeni, believe companies that would most likely consider reshoring would be those in the pharmaceutical and technology sector. Their reason for the move is likely less for job creation and more because of national security concerns.Either way, the way to get more jobs out of reshoring may be by doing more than just incentivizing companies to come back to the U.S.“Maybe what we need is to combine reshoring with really focusing on reeducating a lot of the labor force so that they can manage the robots, build the robots, program the robots, as opposed to doing the job the robots are doing,” said Yardeni. 2004

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Election Day is less than 50 days away, but results from the election could take a lot longer. That's because a record number of voters are voting by mail this election and different states have different rules regarding when those ballots can be opened and processed. Absentee ballots or mail-in ballots generally take a lot longer to count compared to in-person voting machines, because ballots need to be opened and scanned. For instance, in the crucial swing states of Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, ballots can't be opened until Election Day. That differs from other states, like Colorado, which can open ballots as they come into election offices. That means it will take election officials in those swing states a herculean effort to process and scan ballots to get accurate results by the end of election night. Each state is facing either pending legislation at their State Capitol or various lawsuits asking the rules be changed. Those aren't the only reasons results may be delayed. In many states, like North Carolina, Georgia, Nevada and Minnesota, ballots are allowed to be postmarked on Election Day. That means it may take a few days to arrive to an election office. "I think we are looking at five to seven days to roughly a week," said Ted Trimpa, a political consultant. "The challenge is you are going to have so many states doing mail-in ballots that have never done mail ballots," Trimpa said. And it may not just be swing states that are the issue. In New York, a state that will almost certainty vote Democrat, primary results from earlier this year took four weeks in some cases. Henry Rosoff, a political reporter with WPIX in New York City, explained New York law requires 48 hours to pass after the election before absentee ballots can be counted. "We are not going to even begin to count half of our votes until 48 hours after Election Day," Rosoff said. "If we were a swing state, it would seem absolutely outrageous," Rosoff said. 1994

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Border Patrol’s parent agency has fired four employees and suspended 38 without pay for inappropriate social media activity. The announcement comes one year after revelations of a secret Facebook group that mocked members of Congress and migrants. Customs and Border Protection said another 33 employees were disciplined with reprimands or counseling. Of 138 cases investigated, 63 were found unsubstantiated. Posts questioned the authenticity of images of a migrant father and child dead on a riverbank and depicted doctored images of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez purporting to perform a sex act on President Donald Trump. 654
