Russ Johnson is used to being around all sorts of snakes. From harmless to deadly snakes with enough venom able to kill 10 men with one strike. Johnson headed up to the Phoenix Herpetological Society in north Scottsdale, a rescue for about every type of reptile. One day Johnson was transporting a cobra, pulling its container. He said he didn't know the vibrations rattled the top lose."He was right by my arm and then struck me right here," Johnson said, pointing to his back.Johnson said he knew it was the cobra. "I felt like I had a bad burn in my back."The venom is so toxic that Russ knew it would eventually shut down his respiratory system.  "I could just start to feel the burning spreading and so that mean venom is spreading," Johnson said.  He was rushed to Banner University Medical Center in Phoenix. They're used to treating rattlesnake bites but a cobra? They didn't even have the antivenom to treat him. The closest vial of medicine was more than 800 miles away, in Denver. "It was difficult," said Dr. Michelle Ruha, a toxicologist at Banner. She's also one of Johnson's doctors. She tried giving him antivenom the hospital did have, hoping it would save his life. Nothing was working."He was no longer able to open his eyes," Ruha said. "He was becoming weak. He was having trouble speaking."The only option was to fly the 10 vials of antivenom from Denver to Phoenix. Finally, eight hours after the bite, Johnson was starting to come back. "There was an angel on my shoulder," Johnson said. "Beyond Dr. Ruha, who is my personal angel, and I guarantee you that."Today, Banner University Medical Center has the cobra antivenom on-hand. It's also expanding what types it does carry. It's even getting shipments of the medicine to treat bites from the taipan, the deadliest snake in the world. No. they're not native to the Phoenix but neither is a cobra. Doctors at Banner said they don't want to be caught off guard when a life is at stake. 2052

Right now, thousands of people are without power on the Gulf Coast, and the relentless rains and remnants of what was Hurricane Sally is now soaking the Carolinas and moving northeast. In hard-hit Alabama, where the storm first struck land as a Category 2 Hurricane, debris-laced waters have taken over once-thriving neighborhoods. Swollen and rising rivers are now threatening bridges across Florida. At least two people have been killed since Sally made landfall."Citizens awoke to extensive damage and destructive property, loss of power and infrastructure and sadly even the loss of life," Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey said Thursday. One of those deaths occurred in Georgia, when Sally's heavy rains saturated the soil, triggering the collapse of a tree onto a home."Widespread river flooding is ongoing, and it could continue over the next week in different parts of Florida," Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said Thursday.Thousands of homes and businesses on the Gulf Coast are still without power, 48 hours after Sally made landfall."Power though is a major, major initiative and a priority at this point," DeSantis said. "...they do have crews here working. They are going to be working 24/7 to get the power back on."Now, officials are keeping their eyes on new threats brewing. The National Hurricane Center is currently monitoring six storms in the Atlantic. One of those systems has already developed into a major hurricane, though it isn't expected to impact the U.S. However, Tropical Depression 22 is expected to strengthen into at least a Tropical Storm in the coming days before making landfall in Texas."There are seven systems out there right now," said Greg Michel, the executive director of Mississippi Emergency Management. "One of which the system in the bay of Campeche, we could be doing this again in a few days." 1831

RIVERSIDE, Calif. Officer Moye was able to broadcast an "officer needs assistance" call.Of the first three officers on scene, two of them were immediately engaged, both of them were struck during a gun fire exchange, authorities said. One of them received major injuries to his leg and was taken to the hospital in critical condition. By Tuesday afternoon, “he was conscious and talking, in good spirits," said CHP Inland Chief Bill Dance. The other CHP officer received minor injuries to his leg.The suspect was killed in a shootout with a fourth CHP officer.Officer Moye was transported to Riverside County Medical Center in Moreno Valley and was pronounced dead, authorities said.“This incident shows just how dangerous the job of the California Highway Patrol and law enforcement is in general," said Dance.A "large contingent of security" was established at the hospital out of an "abundance of caution," said Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco.Tuesday, investigators continued the lengthy task of looking for evidence on the side of the 215 freeway."It was a long and horrific gun battle," said Riverside Police Chief Sergio Diaz. "And it resulted in a very extensive crime scene."In addition to the three CHP officers who were shot, police said a witness may have also been hit with something, but it doesn't appear to be gunfire. Video from the scene shows bullet holes in the front windshields of two CHP cars. During a news conference Tuesday, Diaz identified the gun used by the suspect only as a rifle, saying it had not yet been processed.KABC is reporting that family members of the suspected gunman identified him as Aaron Luther, a father of two from Beaumont in his late 40s.Watch the news conference in the player below: 2424
