The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Monday that there are 155 patients under investigation this year for acute flaccid myelitis, a condition that that can cause paralysis and mostly affects children.Of these, 62 have been confirmed by the CDC in 22 states, and the remainder continue to be investigated.Acute flaccid myelitis, also called AFM, is a rare but serious condition that affects the nervous system -- specifically, the area of the spinal cord called gray matter. It affects fewer than one in a million people each year across the country, the CDC estimates. The number of patients under investigation is up from 127 patients a week ago, though no new confirmed cases have been reported. The average age of patients confirmed to have the condition is just 4 years old, and more than 90 percent of cases overall occur in children 18 and younger, according to Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the agency's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. 1003

The Trump administration plans to eliminate routine audits of lenders for violations of the Military Lending Act, according to internal agency documents, The New York Times reported on Friday.Mick Mulvaney, the interim director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, plans to terminate the supervisory examinations of lenders, arguing proactive oversight is not laid out in the legislation, according to the report. The proposal to weaken oversight under the Military Lending Act, which was created to protect military service members and their families from financial fraud, predatory loans and credit card gouging, came as a surprise to advocates of military families, the report stated. Those advocates have pressed the government to put a stop to unethical lenders. The agency has been critical in fighting lender misconduct, rolling out mortgage and payday-lender rules and cracking down on bad behavior by penalizing Citigroup, Wells Fargo and many other lenders. In lieu of conducting examinations, the agency will rely on complaints from its websites, hotlines, the military and people who believe they are victims of fraud, the Times reported.President Donald Trump has tapped Kathleen Kraninger to succeed Mulvaney as chief of the consumer watchdog agency. Kraninger, who works under Mulvaney, is expected to face a tough Senate confirmation battle.Under Mulvaney, the bureau has undergone major changes opposed by both Democrats and consumer advocates. In June, Mulvaney effectively terminated a board of advocates who advised the agency about fair lending and underserved communities. The advisers were told on a conference call that the board would not meet until new members were appointed. The CFPB, however, insisted nobody had been fired. The government watchdog agency, which is charged with consumer protection in the financial sector, was created after the financial crisis with the passage of the 2010 Dodd-Frank Act. 1948

The State of Utah sent face masks showing a handgun and controversial political image to a Salt Lake City family. The free masks are part of the “A Mask For Every Utahn” campaign, where federal COVID-19 money purchased more than two million masks to stop the spread of the virus.“I was just shocked,” said Chrstine Passey-Spencer outside her Rose Park home. Two masks delivered to the family show an American flag with a handgun printed across them with “Don't Tread on Me” written below a coiled rattlesnake.“I think the thing that bothered me most is that I knew my tax dollars paid for this and this is very politically charged speech,” Passey-Spencer said. The “Don't Tread on Me” image stems from the Revolutionary War but has become controversial in recent years. The Gadsden Flag has been used by the Tea Party, anti-gun control activists and white supremacists. In 2016, it was deemed to have “racially-tinged” messaging in some contexts by the federal government.More recently, the image has been used by people believing COVID-19 health restrictions take away their constitutional rights.“We hope this is an isolated incident that we just missed these couple of masks,” said Governor’s Office of Economic Development’s Ben Hart, who oversees the state’s mask program.Since April, the state purchased millions of masks from local and international manufacturers.Hart admits about 100 of the “Don't Tread on Me” masks were included in a shipment last month. Hart says the staff deemed them “inappropriate” and attempted to set all of them aside.“We will not be using taxpayer dollars to pay for these masks. We will be working with the manufacturer and ensuring we do not pay for them,” said Hart. The governor’s office replaced the masks for Passey-Spencer on Tuesday.KSTU's Hailey Higgins first reported this story. 1828

The Seattle City Council unanimously approved a law on Tuesday that will raise the minimum pay for Uber and Lyft drivers. In a statement on the Seattle mayor's website, Mayor Jenny Durkan celebrated the city council passing her Fare Share Plan that would make ride-hailing companies pay their drivers the minimum hourly wage, which will go into effect Jan. 1, 2021."The pandemic has exposed the fault lines in our systems of worker protections, leaving many front line workers like gig workers without a safety net," Mayor Durkan said. "It is more important than ever that we add to the economic resilience of our community of drivers. The Fare Share plan guarantees that drivers will receive fair pay and can provide for themselves and their families."The ordinance guarantees drivers will earn at least The Southeast's first winter storm of the season has faded, with clear conditions expected Tuesday, but tens of thousands of people remain without power after the weekend's record-setting snow. The storm killed three people in North Carolina and grounded thousands of flights in the region, including more than 500 flights on Monday.Early Tuesday, more than 44,500 customers in North Carolina, 20,000 in South Carolina and 15,600 in Virginia were without power, according to Poweroutage.US.PHOTOS: As southeastern winter storm fades, canceled flights and icy roads remainCNN meteorologist Michael Guy said temperatures Tuesday would be cold, but above freezing. "At night there will still be possibilities of refreezing over bridges and overpasses on the roads," he warned. The Virginia Department of Transportation advised drivers to allow extra braking distance and to take it slow."If you plan to travel overnight, watch for slick roads & use extra caution. Dropping temps could cause any moisture on the roadways to refreeze," the transportation department said on Twitter.North Carolina Emergency Management also warned on Twitter that freezing nighttime temperatures could make driving hazardous.
