Alejandro Vazquez Paz, 28, died after falling from a building on the 1500 block of E Street, according to San Diego County’s Medical Examiner. The incident was reported around 8:30 in the morning after transients in the area flagged down police, leading them to the abandoned building. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As a way to celebrate military members and their families this weekend, San Diego County Animal Services will waive adoption fees.From May 24 to 26, the department will take part in the Animals for Armed Forces adoption event to offer the free adoptions for cats, dogs, and rabbits. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Bagging vegetables, opening boxes, organizing volunteers.Every month the parking lot at Unity Church in City Heights becomes a mini grocery store."Without this service a lot of people wouldn't even have a plate on the table to be able to say I had my meal today," said Chanae Jackson.Jackson started this food distribution several years back, partnering with Feeding San Diego to make it possible.She also found others who wanted to give back, including her friend Dede Jackson."You have hungry babies at home these places help they help they help feed your family," Jackson explained.Both women know how appreciated the groceries are because in addition to volunteering, they also take home food.They tell ABC 10News there's always been people lining up, but since COVID-19 hit, those lines have grown. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Community leaders and residents gathered Friday to remember a San Diego civic icon.Reverend George Walker Smith died on Feb.15 at the age of 91. A memorial to honor Smith at Christ United Presbyterian Church, where he led mass for decades, was held at 11 a.m. Friday."We kind of thought of Rev. Smith as the black godfather of San Diego, and of this church, because he helped so many people," Delores McNeely, a church member of 30 years, told 10News in February.Smith was the first African American to be elected in the city when he won the race for the San Diego Board of Education in 1963. He also started the Catfish Club, where weekly lunches served as a gathering for locals interested in civic or political issues in the community.The forums began at the church, but were eventually moved to Channel 10 when the attendance became too large."All the political leaders in the community came, and we had this huge forum, and they listened to him. And if something were going on in the community, the first person that they would call was Rev. Smith," said McNeely. Everyone is always amazed," said Messenger.The view is about to become even more priceless because the Padres aren't expected to open up the stadium to fans when they start the season later this month. Messenger will have one of the only seats in town to watch live baseball."Looking for forward to it. I think people have been isolated and bored. Ready for something positive to happen," said Messenger.In late June, Messenger tweeted a photo of his view of Petco Park, sparking thousands of likes and hundreds of replies."They tell me, 'I'll bring the beer. This season, he plans to share his balcony with other baseball fans."This is a unique opportunity, and I'm happy to share it with people who won't get a chance to watch baseball," said Messenger.He hasn't figured out how he'll divvy up the invites. The financial planner says he won't be accepting money, but probably won't turn down food or adult beverages. He's hoping his plans will also benefit the Padres.
