LONG ISLAND, N.Y. — A helicopter crashed offshore near Jones Inlet Wednesday afternoon, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.Officials said the pilot, a 64-year-old man, appeared to be attempting a controlled descent at Meadow Island at around 4:15 p.m. Wednesday. The chopper landed in an area with about three feet of water.Rescue crews from the Coast Guard and several other local agencies responded. The pilot was rescued from the aircraft and taken to a local hospital with minor injuries, including a facial laceration and back and rib pain. He was the only one on board.There was also some damage to the helicopter.Chief Petty Officer David Turner of the U.S. Coast Guard said he did not know the cause of the crash, nor did he know details of the flight plan.There was very thick fog in the area Wednesday, and while Turner did not know if it was a contributing factor to the landing, he said it's difficult to operate in those conditions.Visibility was only a half-mile in the area at the time of the incident with misty conditions in the area."I kept on hearing this helicopter, circling and circling, and after a couple of circles, it didn't sound right to me," said Damian Walsh the man who helped rescue the pilot and took video of the immediate aftermath.Walsh was out on his boat when he says a thick fog quickly rolled in around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon."It turned pretty quickly probably had about 20 yards of visibility," he said.He and another boater rushed to the scene after hearing a loud splash.One coast guard officer told Walsh that the pilot fell 1,000 feet in three seconds.The helicopter fell into shallow water."He was lucky; if he fell 50 yards over, he wouldn't have survived," Walsh said. "I got him on the boat; I called his wife, let her know he was alight."Walsh said he and a couple of other Good Samaritans got him over to rescuers."They wouldn't have found him in that fog. LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A large ``Trump'' sign erected overnight on a hillside near the San Diego (405) Freeway in the Sepulveda Pass was taken down by authorities today.The sign -- consisting of white capital letters similar to the `Hollywood'' sign -- was taken down by Caltrans workers by about 9 a.m.It was not known who put the sign in place. Neither the Los Angeles Police Department nor the California Highway Patrol had any information about the sign when reached by City News Service. Freeway traffic was not affected. Lauren Wonder, chief public information officer for Caltrans, told the Los Angeles Times that the sign was on private property.For that reason, Wonder said, Caltrans workers ``laid it down so it wasn't a visual distraction'' but did not completely remove the sign, which was noticed at about 7 a.m.``This was a life and safety issue because there were concerns about distracted driving,'' Wonder said. 933

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Six Catholic dioceses across California, including Los Angeles and Orange, announced the creation today of a ``compensationalternative to pursuing lawsuits against the church.Diocese officials said the fund will be open to all clergy sex abuse victims, including people living in the country illegally and those who are barred from filing lawsuits because the abuse occurred long ago and is beyond the statute of limitations.``We have been providing pastoral care and financial support for victim-survivors here in the Archdiocese for many years,'' Los Angeles Diocese Archbishop Jose Gomez wrote in a letter to members of the diocese. ``We will continue to do so. But we also understand that some victim-survivors are reluctant to come to the church for assistance. Our hope with this new program is to give these people a chance to seek redress and healing through an independent program.''In addition to Los Angeles and Orange, other dioceses taking part in the program are San Bernardino, San Diego, Fresno and Sacramento -- collectively covering more than 10 million Catholics, or roughly 80 percent of the state's Catholics. Church officials noted that the compensation program will provide a ``non-adversarial'' process that protects victims' privacy -- unlike lawsuits.``Victim-survivors do not need to have a lawyer to participate and there are no fees for participating,'' according to a statement from church officials. ``Settlements for fully completed claims can be paid within 90 days.''Diocese officials also noted that the church itself will have no control over the program, which will be independently administered by mediators Kenneth Feinberg and Camille Biros, who already run similar programs in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Colorado. The California program will be overseen by a board that includes former Gov. Gray Davis and Maria Contreras-Sweet, former administrator of the U.S. Small Business Association.Details of the process for filing claims are expected to be announced at a later date.
