A man charged with murder in the Gary, Indiana area remains at large after he escaped from a prisoner transport vehicle on Monday.According to the Chicago Tribune, Leon Taylor, 22, escaped from a vehicle driven by a private contractor when the driver stopped at a McDonald's drive-thru near Gary.Video released by the Lake County (Indiana) Sheriff's Office shows Taylor open the door of the vehicle while it was stopped in the drive-thru. Taylor ran across a busy street as the driver of the vehicle chased him.Taylor was being extradited from Texas to the Lake County Jail in Crown Point, Indiana, by REDI Transport. Initially, the REDI Transport driver told the Lake County Sheriff's Office that Taylor had escaped from the video."After watching this video, I am highly disturbed and disappointed by the procedures the private transportation driver used during the transfer of this suspect to our jail," Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. said in a news release. "I find it appalling that REDI Transports failed to use appropriate caution and may have put the public at risk."Police initially said that Taylor had been wearing a belly chain, handcuffs and a leg brace at the time of his escape. However, according to WLS-TV in Chicago the sheriff's office says the video now shows that Taylor likely was not handcuffed and that security footage shows him struggling with the leg braces throughout the trip."We believe shackles could have prevented the suspect from getting away," Martinez said.REDI Transport, which is based in Green Bay, Wisconsin, says it has opened an investigation into the incident."REDI Transports continues to cooperate fully with those investigating the prisoner escape that occurred yesterday afternoon in Gary, Indiana," the company said in a statement on Tuesday. "We are also conducting our own internal investigation into what happened and are determining what procedural or process changes may be needed to ensure this does not happen again."Taylor is wanted on murder charges in connection with an East Chicago, Indiana homicide. A female orca whale is still apparently grieving her dead calf and still swimming with its body after more than two weeks, authorities say."It's heartbreaking to watch," said Michael Milstein of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's West Coast Region. "This kind of behavior is like a period of mourning and has been seen before. What's extraordinary about this is the length of time."The adult -- Tahlequah, or J35 as the whale has come to be known by researchers -- and corpse were last seen definitively Thursday afternoon, 17 days after the baby's birth. The female calf died after a few hours.The mother, preventing the body from sinking to the ocean floor, has been carrying it and nudging it toward the surface of the Pacific off the coast of Canada and the northwestern US.Orcas, also called killer whales, are highly social, and this pod was spotted Friday afternoon near Vancouver, British Columbia.Another struggling female in the same pod -- J50, also known as Scarlet -- was shot with antibiotics to fight an infection, since scientists worry that she has been losing a frightening amount of weight.These are grim signs. The Southern Resident population the females belong to has about 75 members, and has not had a successful birth in three years. A man in Gloucester Township, New Jersey who was being booked for an outstanding warrant found himself in even more trouble after deputies said he vomited 32 small bags of heroin last week, the Courier-Post reported. Michael Rosario, 24, was arrested last Thursday after he was pulled over for speeding, and then was charged with giving police a phony name. Rosario allegedly sped past police, and switched seats with his passenger after he was pulled over. Police said they found six bags of heroin and 13 empty bags with heroin residue, the Courier-Post reported. Once at the county jail, police claim that Rosario vomited one large bag filled with 32 smaller bags full of heroin, prompting additional drug-related charges. Rosario was then taken to an area hospital, but has since been returned to the jail.  859

A high-speed police pursuit has ended in a Phoenix neighborhood as police continue to search the area for at least one suspect.Police say they were following a possible stolen vehicle and attempted to pull the driver over Tuesday when the suspect refused to stop.Helicopter video showed the white SUV in the Biltmore area around noon, going the wrong way in traffic and driving on light rail tracks near Central Avenue and Thomas Road to avoid stoplights. Video from helicopter showed what appeared to be stop sticks deployed on the vehicle that caused a tire to blow near a neighborhood in west Phoenix. The vehicle was then seen driving through multiple front yards and sidewalks around 12:30 p.m. The occupants of the car bailed in front of a home on foot. Police say one woman, the passenger in the vehicle, was taken into custody. The male driver is still missing and believed to be hiding in the neighborhood.Police say the male suspect is believed to be responsible for at least three carjackings. During one of the carjackings Tuesday, a Phoenix police officer tried to intervene and fired shots toward the suspect. A California utility company said its crews found a damaged transmission tower and holes in a power pole at separate locations near the site where the Camp Fire started.More than a month after the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in the state's history broke out, Pacific Gas & Electric Co. released a more detailed account of outages it experienced that day.In a letter to the California Public Utilities Commission, PG&E said one of its employees called 911 on November 8 -- the day the deadly wildfire began -- after spotting flames in the vicinity of a high-voltage tower near the town of Pulga in Butte County.That fire was reported almost 15 minutes after the utility experienced a transmission line outage at the same location, the company said. It was also around the same time the Camp Fire broke out.The electric utility had disclosed in a regulatory filing last month that it "experienced an outage" on a transmission line in Butte County about 15 minutes before the wildfire began but had not released additional details.PG&E said in its Tuesday letter that inspectors later discovered that a hook connecting part of the transmission line and the transmission tower was broken. They also found a flash mark on the tower.The company also detailed a second outage at another location. That incident was reported a few miles away from the first outage and about 15 minutes after the wildfire started.When crews went to check the outage a day later, the letter states, they "observed that the pole and other equipment was on the ground with bullets and bullet holes at the break point of the pole and on the equipment."Meredith E. Allen, PG&E's senior director of regulatory relations, explained that details about the incidents are preliminary and they remain under investigation."The cause of these incidents has not been determined and may not be fully understood until additional information becomes available, including information that can only be obtained through examination and testing of the equipment retained by CAL FIRE," Allen wrote to regulators.The Camp Fire burned through more than 153,000 acres in Butte County, killing at least 85 people and destroying thousands of structures. It was contained November 25 after becoming the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in California history.Cal Fire, the state's forestry and fire protection agency, has said the cause of the Camp Fire is still under investigation.On Tuesday, PG&E said "the loss of life, homes and businesses in the Camp Fire is truly devastating.""Our focus continues to be on assessing our infrastructure to further enhance safety, restoring electric and gas service where possible, and helping customers begin to recover and rebuild.
