CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) - The Coronado teenager nearly shot to death in a robbery last spring is now a real estate agent, possibly the youngest in his community. At just 19, Jacob McKanry took the test to get his license just days after getting released from the hospital.The Coronado High School Senior nearly died after he was shot selling jewelry to a couple of guys he met online.McKanry and a friend met the so-called buyers on Orange Avenue around 9 p.m. on May 4th.One of the guys grabbed the necklace while the other pulled out a gun. McKanry tried to get back the jewelry."I just hear a giant boom from behind me, and I feel my insides go like this," said McKanry.He said the shooter than aimed for McKanry's friend."My buddy was backing up, and he fell over a bike rack and the bullet, he shot right as he fell over so, the bullet went right over his head and hit that Which Wich window which definitely saved his life," said McKanry.McKanry was released from the hospital after ten days, but ultimately readmitted with a near-lethal infection.He says he still has pain in his liver and pressure in his lungs. He endured a ten-hour surgery to have the bullet, lodged between his spine and aorta, removed."It went through the back, at first it shattered part of one of my ribs, so that's how it entered into the body. So I broke, for lack of a better term, broke 2 of my ribs, and it took out a baseball chunk size of my liver. It punctured and collapsed my lung filing with blood, fractured my spine, shaved off part of my aorta, causing a pseudoaneurysm," said McKanry.McKanry said he was sure he would die."I leaned over, coughed into my hand, I spit up blood, and I was like well this is bad, I was like I'm pretty much going to die here," he said.His Christian faith brought him comfort."I was at peace, and it's going to be weird when I say this, but I was even happy, obviously, not happy that I got shot, but I pretty much knew where I was going. I knew that I was going to die and I knew that I was going to be soon reunited with the person that created me, so I was just peaceful. I was looking up at the stars and,I was happy, I was ready to go," said McKanry.Today the nineteen-year-old is excited about selling real estate. He's also studying business through Santa Barbara City College.Police arrested 3 teenagers. A judge recently sentenced the seventeen-year-old boy who set up the robbery to three years in juvenile detention. An eighteen-year-old is charged with being the getaway driver, and a second seventeen-year-old is accused of being the shooter. McKanry wants the shooter tried as an adult, but he also has compassion."I hope that he finds God, and I hope that he understands that what he did was absolutely wrong, and I hope that he is able to change his life around," said McKanry.McKanry hopes to use his ordeal to share a message."Always, always, always be thankful for what God lays in your path and never take anything for granted, cause you could go outside one day and it will all be gone," said McKanry. 3055

CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Police arrested a second suspect Wednesday in the shooting of an 18-year-old Coronado High School student earlier this month during a jewelry sale meetup. According to police, Alejandro Guzman, 18, was arrested for his alleged involvement in the shooting of Jacob McKanry, who was shot on May 4 near Orange Avenue and 10th Street. Guzman was charged with robbery and transported to San Diego Central Jail. A 17-year-old male was arrested in Chula Vista on May 22 after police served three search warrants in connection to the shooting. That suspect was charged with attempted homicide, robbery, and assault with a deadly weapon. CVS hears the Amazon footsteps -- and the pharmacy giant is wasting no time trying to get ahead of any Jeff Bezos plan to disrupt the drug store business the way that he has the rest of retail.CVS said Monday that it plans to offer next day delivery of prescription drugs nationwide in 2018. In some urban markets, CVS will even deliver on the same day.A program to deliver both medications and a select offering of other CVS products from the front of the store will begin in Manhattan on December 4.CVS CEO Larry Merlo made the announcements during the company's earnings conference call with analysts.The news comes just a few weeks after reports surfaced that Amazon had received wholesale pharmacy licenses in a dozen states.That move would potentially allow Amazon to sell prescription medications online.The speculation caused the shares of CVS and rival Walgreens to fall, as did pharmacy benefits manager company Express Scripts, a competitor of the CVS-owned PBM Caremark.The stocks of drug distributors Cardinal Health, AmerisourceBergen and McKesson all fell too.This is because investors are worried that Amazon, which is already changing the dynamics of the grocery business thanks to its acquisition of Whole Foods, may look to do the same for drug stores.But Merlo said during the call with analysts Monday that he still sees Amazon as more of a potential ally than threat."You would never close the door on any type of partnership," Merlo said, when asked by an analyst about possibly working with Amazon.Still, CVS seems to recognize that the health care landscape is changing rapidly, and it needs to adjust. There have even been recent rumors that CVS may look to buy health insurer Aetna.Aetna scrapped plans to merge with rival Humana earlier this year due to intense regulatory scrutiny. CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) -- The Hotel del Coronado is suspending hotel operations amid the coronavirus outbreak, the Coronado Times reports. According to the times, the temporary suspension will go into effect Thursday, March 26. The hotel told the Times that security will be on-site around the clock to ensure the protection of the historic site. Community Health Centers that care for hundreds of thousands of low-income San Diegans are bracing for deep cuts. Congress has to act by Sept. 30 to maintain the funds to the centers, or services will start to decrease."This conversation is, do you have a doctor when you need one, who will see you?" said Vernita Todd, Vice President of Health Center Partners of Southern California, an association of 17 health centers in San Diego, Imperial and Riverside counties. The centers are concerned about million of federal money that Congress has yet to renew. The money goes to lower the cost of services like primary care, vaccinations, cancer screenings and physicals. It can help turn a visit that would normally cost 0 into a visit. "If they can't afford it, does that mean they'll forego treatment? Will they forego going to the doctor? Will they skip vaccinations for their children?" Todd said. Earlier this month, Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-NY, introduced a bill to continue the funding for community health centers. It has 13 bipartisan supporters. Her spokesman says she's exploring different ways to move the legislation forward. Todd says she's not concerned the bill wouldn't pass. She just wants it to come up for a vote. But she's worried Congress isn't paying attention to the health center needs because it's focused on issues like Hurricane recovery, repealing the Affordable Care Act, and Immigration. She says the centers would start taking hits Oct. 1, when money for a program that essentially gets doctors to health centers dries up.Then, on Jan. 1, they would lose the biggest lump sum, which could lead to layoffs, closures, and fewer services. There are six San Diego health center locations, including City Heights, San Ysidro, and Vista.
