Standing in the kitchen of her family’s temporary rental home in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, 13-year-old Elizabeth Wilk reflects back on the spring that was taken away from her and countless other teenagers across the country.Wilk was a 7th grader in Baltimore when the pandemic hit, and classes were abruptly halted to stop the spread of the virus. Then in May, her mom got a new job in Maine. There was never a real chance to say goodbye to any of her friends in person.“It felt so sudden,” she recalled. ‘That it was almost like I was too rushed for a lot of sadness.”Before she or her younger brother, Charlie Wilk, knew it, this family of four was packing up a U-Haul and headed to Maine. It was nearly 500 miles away from everything they knew.“It’s been hard to find friends that are my own,” Elizabeth Wilk added about the realities of relocating during a pandemic.Having seen this kind of place in her dreams, Elizabeth Wilk’s mom, Shannon Wilk, always imagined that moving to coastal Maine would be like a never-ending vacation. But this family and so many others across the country have realized it's been hard to put down roots in a new place because of COVID-19. Shannon Wilk spends most of her days working remotely from the basement of her home.“I feel like we’re not really part of this community yet. I get up every morning and I come to my basement,” she said.With millions of Americans out of work though, Shannon Wilk knew that when she landed a new job at Spinnaker Trust in Portland, Maine, she had to take it.“I’m lucky I was offered a job and the job offered stayed in place,” she added.The Wilks’ story is just one among many in the American struggle to cope with COVID-19 as major life plans are panning out in different ways than we imagined.“There comes a point where you have to make the decision, are we going to go or not?” Shannon Wilk said.There has been a bit of a silver lining though. With so many Americans working from basically anywhere right now, it’s given companies new flexibility in who they’re hiring.Shannon Wilk’s boss, Caitlin Dimillo, says her company can now expand their candidate search pool when posting new positions.“We don’t need somebody down the street that can come into the physical office,” Dimillo said.As for the Wilk kids, they are both looking forward to school starting in a few weeks, even if in-person learning is only two days a week. 2405

Sexting among teens and younger children has increased over the past decade and poses a growing challenge for educators and parents, according to a new study.One in four young people said they'd received sexts, and one in seven reported sending them, according to the study, which was published Monday in the journal JAMA Pediatrics. The research included data from 39 separate research projects conducted between January 1990 and June 2016, with a total of 110,380 participants, all of whom were under 18 -- with some as young as 11.The researchers focused on data since 2008 and found an increase in sexting among young people.The increased number of young people involved in sending or receiving sexually explicit photographs or messages has corresponded with rapidly expanding access to cell phones.With that trend in mind, the study's authors suggest that "age specific information on sexting and its potential consequences should regularly be provided as a component of sex education."Why sext? 1013

That fixation on returning to normalcy may be rooted deeply in the kind of purpose most people find in routines."Normal is like this mirage on the horizon of what life was like before February in the United States," explained Mike Serazio, who serves as an associate professor of communication at Boston College.Just the word itself, Serazio says, brings a sense of certainty to people. With COVID-19 impacting nearly every facet of our lives, it's created a longing for the way things were, especially given how stressful life can seem right now."Part of what we seek in normalcy is something that is comfortable, familiar and sustainable. I think we’re all still in a daze in terms of how this has played out,” Serazio added. “The hopes this would be more temporary are not panning out.”Beyond the word itself, there's another reason the concept of normality sticks so profoundly in our subconscious. Nicholas Wagner, who studies psychological and brain sciences at Boston University, says structure and routine help humans navigate uncertainty."That sense of routine and security helps provide us the bandwidth to make advances in other areas of our lives," Wagner said.The loss of normality has deeply impacted kids. For them, patterns and routines are central to development and growth.Wagner's advice for parents who have kids who might be struggling right now is to establish some semblance of a routine. Either setting a specific bedtime or a time during the day when chores need to be done and then hanging a calendar on the fridge that kids can visually reference."That sense of security will establish a new sense of normal for kids." 1790

Several community activists gathered Friday to speak about a Kansas City, Missouri, officer’s arrest of a woman who was nine months pregnant.KCPD said the woman was interfering with another arrest, and that’s why they took her into custody.The woman’s attorney, Stacy Shaw, said the officers arrested her client because they were unhappy she was videotaping them at a gathering for a balloon release.Video circulated on social media of the arrest. It shows the woman face down on the ground with an officer appearing to kneel on her back.The woman was taken to the hospital and has since been discharged.Shaw on Friday said her client is still in pain and can’t walk. Her unborn child is OK, though it remains unclear if she will experience complications related to the arrest, Shaw said.Shaw and other activists present called for the arresting officer and KCPD Chief of Police Rick Smith to be terminated.The group repeated calls for action from KCMO Mayor Quinton Lucas.Among the speakers Friday was Troy Robertson, who said he was present Wednesday when KCPD arrived at East 35th Street and Prospect Avenue and “harassed” the group gathered there, asking them to disperse.Robertson, who police said the owner previously had banned from the property, is the person police were attempting to arrest when the pregnant woman and others allegedly interfered, according to a KCPD spokesman.KCPD said Thursday that the business owner called them to the scene after a fight in the parking lot and asked them to make non-customers leave the premises.Robertson said he “doesn’t see color, only beautiful lives,” and that everyone should be held accountable for their actions.
