SOLANA BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) -- A city of Solana Beach plan to redevelop part of the City Hall parking lot into affordable housing didn't generate any interest from developers. The city says not one builder responded to the request for proposals it issued last spring to build 19 affordable units on the City Hall property, which is across the street from its exclusive coastal bluffs. Solana Beach Mayor David Zito said it's hard to pinpoint why no developers were interested since none applied. "Projects that include affordable units can be more challenging to deal with due to potential local resistance," Zito said. "This provides an initial barrier that simply needs to be overcome. Developers would typically want the possibility of a greater return in order to take on additional risk and these types of projects typically provide less return."Zito added another issue was the requirement to keep the public parking at City Hall, which raised costs. Solana Beach, with a rent that averages more than ,000 a month, currently has zero affordable housing units. The coastal city approved a 10-unit complex down the block from City Hall in 2014. It survived a lengthy legal challenge but still has not broken ground largely due to funding. That has left many workers who have jobs in the city's restaurants, hotels and quaint shops to commute from far away, or to live in groups nearby."In my complex there's like four people living in a condo," said Mary Lou Bottino, who has lived in Solana Beach for more than 20 years. Solana Beach is now turning its attention to its 117-space Distillery Parking lot across from Fletcher Cove. SORRENTO VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) - A Marine veteran suffered major injuries after a wrong-way driver crashed into him on I-5 early Saturday morning.Friends have identified the victim as Luis Maldonado. He was transported to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla. His service dog Jax, who was also in the car, was taken to an animal hospital and is expected to survive.The wrong-way driver died at the scene. California Highway Patrol suspects he was under the influence of alcohol. He has not been identified.Maldonado's friends have set up a GoFundMe account to help pay for the mounting medical costs.  622

(KGTV) - A Solana Beach cafe is rebounding after a theft over the summer, new coronavirus restrictions and wintry weather.Back in August, seven of Homestead Cafe and Market's tables and chairs were stolen. Police found the culprit and got back most of their outdoor dining furniture.The entire time, the community has wrapped their arms around the mom and pop shop."People are still coming by wanting to bring stuff asking what we need," co-owner of the restaurant Marie Brawn said, thankfully."They wanted to make sure that we knew that they still want a place like this to be around after this whole mess," she said alluding to the constantly changing coronavirus guidelines for restaurants.She said many small businesses like them in the area have been shutting down."It's a bit of a roller coaster, it's been very humbling," co-owner Jamie Brawn said.The couple was ahead of the curve when the county announced San Diego was in the purple most restrictive tier this week. They already had all their dining outside.When they made that move, they were ahead of the forecast, thinking to add a waterproof custom made patio cover and heat lamps."Through the generosity of our neighbors, we were actually able to do it and get ready for winter coming," Marie said.She said a couple of loyal customers even came and sat under their new patio in the rain last weekend.Inside their cafe has been redesigned into an organic market, filled with produce, specialty cheeses, Italian sauces, beer, wine, breakfast items. They also have items for those with dietary restrictions and gifts for the holiday season.The market helps them with the overhead, keeping the business afloat.On top of it all, they're balancing distance learning with their two boys and charity work, feeding families in need in North County. "Food insecurity even before the pandemic was a huge thing on our minds and something that with the pandemic we want to keep going," Jamie said.They've donated 28,000 meals since April and hope to fund-raise through the end of the year to supply more families more food as the holidays grow closer. 2132
