However, due to concerns about structural integrity, the firefighters were ordered out to assume a defensive posture. During this transition from offensive operations to defensive operations, a suggestion was made to take a photo, with the retiring battalion chief, in front of the building.Detroit Firefighters risk their lives everyday entering burning buildings and performing dangerous technical rescues. Saving lives and saving property is our mission, and the men and women of DFD execute this mission without hesitation. I hold them in high esteem; we should all hold them in high esteem for their sacrifices. This momentary lapse in judgment brought great embarrassment to our department and our great city. For this poor judgment, all involved will be held accountable. Because this is a personnel matter, I cannot discuss details of the discipline. However, supervisors and above will receive a greater degree of disciplinary accountability. The list, which names three posthumous recipients, includes sports and entertainment legends such as Babe Ruth and Elvis Presley as well as political and charitable luminaries such as philanthropist Miriam Adelson, Utah Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch and the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.Adelson, the wife of billionaire Republican donor Sheldon Adelson, is cited by the White House for founding research centers committed to fighting substance abuse and, with her husband, establishing the Adelson Medical Research Foundation, which supports research on life-threatening illness. The National Weather Service is projecting Southern Arizona's fire season to be more active than normal."There's leftover dry fuels from last year, and there's newly formed fine fuels," Warning Coordination Meteorologist Ken Drozd said.Above average daytime high temperatures, combined with storm systems bringing wind but no rain, and very dry conditions, are some of the reasons why the NWS projects May and June to have the more fire activity than normal.Due to a wet February, there is now more dry fuel in the region, according to Drozd. Sometimes, significant rain events leading into fire season can delay or shorten it, but that wasn't the case this year."Those new grasses that greened up from that precipitation event have now dried out again, due to the warm temperatures we've experienced lately," Drozd said."The hotter you get, the more you're going to dry things out. It just keeps things dried out unless you get some intermediate rain that'll come in, and again, there's none in the forecast right now."Last year, fires ripped through Southern Arizona from April to July, blackening landscapes and destroying homes in their paths. Young people are particularly feeling this with changes in learning and missed milestones.In a new survey of 14 to 24-year-olds, Mental Health America found 24% of those surveyed think training adults would help with their mental health challenges.About 47% said they want to learn more about how to help their own mental health, which is what one new program developed during the pandemic is trying to do.“What we're hearing is that young people are depressed, that they have very little hope for the future, and they want skills to be able to help themselves and their peers,” said Martin Rafferty, CEO and founder of Oregon-based nonprofit Youth Era.The program Uplift by Youth Era is a five-day event and training that is free for young people.“It’s giving them the skillsets to take a look around in their community and say I can be a part of change. I can help things even in this dark time,” said Rafferty. “You're not alone, and you are powerful and capable of making a difference.”The training includes identifying signs of distress, building coping skills to use during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond, and learning about self-care.Oxford is studying the program and says so far, the results have been positive.The people behind the program say teens have told them it feels more like an event than going to Zoom school.If you know a young person who would benefit from this, they can get more information here. 1503
