Wasn't it great?Last September, as a dismal 66-win season was winding to a close, I had a chance to interview Fowler on my Mighty 1090 morning radio show, "Ben and Woods." I asked him about the possibility of pursing Manny Machado on the free agent market."Machado, I think, is somebody that every team would like," Fowler said before adding the dreaded "but" to the sentence. "But if we're looking at someone who's looking at 10 years and 0 million, I don't think that's something we're looking to do."Then, 145 days later, Fowler made himself into a liar, authorizing exactly what he said he wouldn't do -- a 10-year, 0 million contract for Machado. A source told me the Padres were high on two third baseman in the Reds organization -- big leaguer Eugenio Suarez and top prospect Nick Senzel. But with little movement around baseball on free agents and trades -- and undoubtedly a high asking price by the Reds -- a deal never materialized. The Padres' hole at third remained, and there was Machado, still waiting for the right fit on the free agent market.Finally, don't discount general manager A.J. Preller's powers of persuasion. He was able to convince his bosses that the right guy for the Padres was available now and this was a one-time opportunity."You could wait for some of the young talent that we've built up and look at 3 or 4 years and hope the right guys are out there," Preller told reporters at Cactus League media day in Arizona, "but if pieces that fit for us both in the short-term and long-term are out there, that's how you build a club." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Police are investigating the death of a child at a Tierrasanta home Tuesday.San Diego Police responded to the 3100 Block of Minuteman St. just before 11 a.m. to reports of a four-month-old child not breathing. When paramedics arrived, they began CPR on the infant.First responders were not able to revive the child.Police do not suspect the death to be criminal in nature at this point. However, police said since they are still not sure what led to the baby's death, they are investigating.The child died in a home in a military housing neighborhood.  624

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Pacific Beach residents were seen running for their lives as a pickup truck slammed into several parked vehicles early Thursday.Witness video captured the incident, showing a pickup truck revving its engine, screeching its tires, and slamming into vehicles. Witnesses said at least nine vehicles were damaged. Another video showed neighbors holding the driver down on the ground until police arrived, one neighbor holding the man down in a headlock. Someone nearby could be heard yelling, "don't hurt him," at the group.Police arrive to detain the driver, but it's not clear what led to the dangerous incident.One neighbor who helped hold down the driver said his first reaction was to prevent anyone for getting hurt."My first reaction he needed to get out of the car and restrain him so he didn't hit anyone else," said James Scherr.The driver was taken to a nearby hospital by police for minor injuries. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Officials with the San Diego Padres announced Friday that pitcher Luis Perdomo received a a five-game suspension for his role in Wednesday’s bench-clearing brawl during a game against the Colorado Rockies.The scrum began in the bottom of the third inning when Padres starting pitcher Luis Perdomo threw a 96-mph pitch that nearly hit Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado in the back.Arenado threw down his helmet and bat and charged Perdomo, who countered by throwing his glove at the batter. As Perdomo backed up to avoid an Arenado punch, players and coaches from both sides stormed the field in an attempt to break up the fight.RELATED: Base-brawl: Benches clear in Padres-Rockies game“Arenado has received a five-game suspension for charging the mound and then fighting.  Rockies outfielder Gerardo Parra has received a four-game suspension for fighting during the incident,” the team said in a statement. "Padres pitcher Buddy Baumann has received a one-game suspension for fighting during the incident.  Perdomo, Arenado, Parra and Baumann all received undisclosed fines in addition to their suspensions.,” Padres team officials said.Padres catcher A.J. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One man is dead and another person was injured after two separate shootings just miles apart early Saturday.The first shooting occurred in the Lincoln Park area before 3:30 a.m. near Euclid and Imperial avenues. A suspect wearing dark clothing reportedly shot at a group of transients, according to San Diego Police.One person was hit by debris from the gunshot and taken to the hospital as a precaution.MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhoodA second shooting occurred about two miles away, an officer patrolling Mountain View heard gunshots around the same time. He arrived to find a man lying on the ground on South 45th Street, near Willy Henderson Sports Complex.The Hispanic man in his 20s to 30s was shot multiple times and died at the scene, police said. His identity has not been released.Police are searching for a white Volkswagon seen in the area by witnesses following the shooting.
