(AP) — When scientists destroyed the first nest of so-called murder hornets found in the U.S., they discovered about 500 live specimens in various stages of development.Washington state officials said Tuesday that the total included nearly 200 queens that had the potential to start their nests.Still, that didn't end the threat from the giant insects that can deliver painful though rarely deadly stings to people and wipe out entire hives of honey bees.Scientists think other nests already exist and say it's impossible to know if any queens escaped before scientists destroyed the first nest.According to the Associated Press, in the first nest back in October, researchers found:—190 total larvae.—108 pupae.—112 workers.—76 queens, most of them being new virgin queens.According to experts, a few dozen people a year in Asian countries have died from them, despite their nickname, and it could be far less than that, the AP reported.According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in comparison, in the U.S., typical hornets, wasps, and bees kill an average of 62 people a year. 1119

(AP) -- A North Carolina man who won a million lottery prize in 2017 has been arrested on a murder charge in the killing of a woman whose body was found at a hotel.The Shallotte Police Department charged 52-year-old Michael Todd Hill of Leland, with murder after the body of 23-year-old Keonna Graham was found Monday in a hotel room in the Brunswick County town.WECT-TV reports that Hill won million from an Ultimate Millions scratch-off ticket in August 2017.A cousin of Graham described her as as a generous, loving and adventurous young woman who enjoyed hiking and bicycle rides. 616

SOLANA BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) -- Solana Beach’s alternative to San Diego Gas and Electric appears to be in store for financial headwinds. A new city report says that the Solana Energy Alliance could run at a deficit for the next two years, which look to be more challenging than originally forecast. The city launched the alliance in June to help the city reach its goal of 100 percent renewable energy by 2035 and provide competition to SDG&E. Currently, more than 90 percent of Solana Beach energy and businesses buy their electricity from the alliance. It saves them about 2 percent from SDG&E. “They’re definitely stepping into deep water to try to do this themselves,” said Solana Beach resident Ed Radcliffe. “I hope they do it right.”Solana Beach City Councilman Peter Zahn said overall the energy program is healthy. It has high enrollment and is paying off expenses from the launch. He said it had higher revenues than expected while also having higher expenses than expected. Zahn said the report examined the alliance’s first three months, so it’s still early. He added a big hit came from a recent Public Utilities Commission decision to hike the exit fees residents pay SDG&E to buy it elsewhere. The Solana Beach city report says the fees could rise by as much as 50 percent. “While we are not happy with some of the factors that have influenced this - like the exit fee - we are really optimistic about going out into the future,” Zahn said.The report said higher energy prices and lower SDG&E electricity generation rates are also impacting revenue.In October, the city of San Diego announced plans to create its own alternative to SDG&E, called a Community Choice Aggregator. A spokesman for Mayor Kevin Faulconer says comparing Solana Beach’s organization to what is in store in San Diego is apples to oranges. SPRING VALLEY (KGTV) -- An hours-long SWAT standoff came to an end Thursday evening in Spring Valley. According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, the incident began around 1:30 on the 10700 block of Jamacha Boulevard. Deputies tried to serve the man with a warrant when he barricaded himself inside his home. The man was taken into custody around 6:30 p.m., the department says. Several nearby mobile homes were evacuated during the standoff. It's unclear at this time what the suspect was wanted for. 522
