Florida Republican Rep. Dennis Ross is retiring after eight years of serving in the US House."After thoughtful prayer and consideration, my wife Cindy and I decided that I will not seek re-election for a fifth-term in office," Ross wrote in a statement posted to Facebook Wednesday morning."I am grateful for this incredible opportunity to serve and I look forward to the next chapter of my life which will include, in some way, continued public service."Ross wrote that he plans on returning to Lakeland, Florida, the district he represents, and practicing law.The Tampa Bay Times was the first to report on Ross' retirement."Eight years takes its time on you. ... There's got to be an exit strategy at some point," Ross, who was elected in 2010, told the newspaper. The retirement announcement of Ross, who joined House leadership in 2014 as senior deputy majority whip, comes the same day that House Speaker Paul Ryan said he won't seek re-election and will hang up his gavel after this year.The-CNN-Wire 1014

Fox News and ABC News report that President Trump has submitted written answers to questions posed by special counsel Robert Mueller. Trump told reporters before boarding Marine One that he finished the written answers on Monday and provided them to his lawyers, and that he expects them to submit the responses "today or soon." "The written answers are finished," Trump said. "The written answers to the witch hunt that's been going on forever."Asked whether he thought Mueller would be fair, Trump said he hopes so.The responses from the President signify a major development in the Mueller probe following months of negotiations between the special counsel's office and Trump's legal team, and could be a sign of the end stages of the investigation. But it's not yet clear whether the answers will be enough for Mueller to finish his investigation, as there could be additional questions — and the special counsel's office could still try to pursue an in-person interview with Trump.Trump and his legal team balked at some of the questions from Mueller that covered the presidential transition and Trump's time in the White House, believing those could be off limits due to executive privilege, CNN has previously reported. The questions also cover only issues related to the potential collusion investigation and not the probe into possible obstruction of justice.Once Trump submits his answers, the ball will be back in Mueller's court to decide whether to pursue additional questions, follow-ups to the President's response or an in-person interview. When Trump's legal team agreed to answer questions about collusion, they put off decisions about answering questions related to obstruction or sitting down for an interview. And Trump suggested in a recent interview with "Fox News Sunday" that those could be off the table."I think we've wasted enough time on this witch hunt and the answer is probably, we're finished," Trump told Fox's Chris Wallace when asked if he would say no to an in-person interview or providing answers on obstruction questions. If Trump's legal team rebuffs further inquiries from Mueller, it will be up to the special counsel to decide whether he has enough to finish writing his report or he needs an interview. Mueller could try to subpoena Trump for an interview, but Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker likely would need to sign off on that decision. The big looming question over the agreement for Trump to provide the written answers related to the period during the campaign is whether that satisfies Mueller's questions about the transition and inauguration. Trump's legal team was provided a list of questions in the spring that included asking about efforts during the transition to establish a back channel to Russia and a 2017 meeting in the Seychelles involving Trump ally Erik Prince, a businessman and founder of the private security company formerly known as Blackwater.The-CNN-Wire 2991

Following Emergency Use Authorization by the FDA and a formal recommendation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) over the weekend, the first Americans began receiving Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine on Monday. As the sun rose on the east coast, medical professionals began distributing vaccines to patients who had lined up for an initial dose.In New York, Gov. Andrew Cuomo was there to witness the first injection in his state. According to Scripps station WPIX in New York City, the first person to receive the vaccine in the state was Sandra Lindsay, a nurse who works at Long Island Jewish Medical Center.Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear was also on hand to see the first injections in his commonwealth. At 2:30 p.m. ET in Washington, D.C., Health and Human Services Director Alex Azar and Surgeon General Jerome Adams will be on hand to witness as health care workers at George Washington University Hospital will be among the first to receive the vaccine. The first injections of the vaccine came the same day that the U.S. is expected to surpass 300,000 COVID-19 deaths. As of Monday morning, Johns Hopkins reports that the U.S. had total 299,000 deaths; the country has seen more than 2,000 deaths a day in recent weeks. On Friday night, the FDA made the much-anticipated move to approve Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine candidate for Emergency Use. The move allows the U.S. to begin inoculating Americans against COVID-19, which is currently spreading and killing at rates not yet seen during the pandemic. The FDA prompted Pfizer to begin shipping the first doses of the vaccine nationwide. On Sunday, the CDC issued a recommendation for the vaccine, giving health care professionals to start distributing shots to those that want them.Pfizer's vaccine requires two doses, which need to be taken 21 days apart. Everyone who receives an initial dose on Monday will need to return next month to complete the process.Pfizer's development of a COVID-19 vaccine — which studies have shown to be 95% effective in preventing the virus — in under a year is nothing short of a medical miracle. The previous speed record for vaccine development occurred in the 1960s when researchers developed a vaccine for the mumps in just four years. However, plenty of obstacles remain for the U.S. amid the pandemic. Anywhere from about 30% to 50% of Americans have expressed skepticism in getting a COVID-19. Health care experts suspect that about 70% of Americans would need COVID-19 antibodies in order to reach herd immunity.A COVID-19 vaccine developed by Moderna is expected to be granted Emergency Use Authorization later this week, and health care professionals could begin distributing that vaccine as soon as next week.An earlier version of this story mistakenly stated that the two doses of Pfizer's vaccine needed to be taken 28 days apart. 2847

Former Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin admitted Friday that it hurt "a bit" to hear Sen. John McCain say he wished he picked Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman as his running mate in 2008."I don't lie, so I'll tell you -- a bit. You know, I think I described it earlier as a gut punch," Palin told NBC News in an interview Friday. "But again, I'm going to choose to look back on the good times that we did have together."In his forthcoming memoir, "The Restless Wave," and in a separate documentary, the Arizona Republican said he regrets not choosing Lieberman, a Democrat-turned-independent senator, calling it "another mistake that I made," The New York Times reported. Palin, the former Alaska GOP governor, was ultimately on the 2008 ticket with McCain.Palin's supporters have jumped on McCain's remarks and implied they mean he regrets choosing Palin as his running mate.Palin told NBC News that she hopes McCain, who is battling brain cancer, finds some "positive aspect in decisions that he's made in the past -- even about that campaign.""It is kind of sad to hear that he and or someone speaking for him does have regrets," Palin said. "And I hope that he finds that kind of peace and contentment also to be able to look back on decisions and realize, really, things work out the way that they're supposed to work out."She called McCain a "friend" and said she will "never disparage someone who has served our country and made a lot of sacrifices as a vet.""I always had a lot of respect for his maverick nature," Palin said. "He going rogue -- wish he would have been kind of going rogue more on the common-sense conservative side of some issues. No, I certainly have respect for many of the things that he's accomplished."Palin told The Daily Mail in an interview published Thursday that hearing McCain's admission that he regrets not choosing Lieberman is "like a perpetual gut-punch," but she attributes "a lot of what we're hearing and reading regarding McCain's statements to his ghostwriter or ghostwriters."The-CNN-Wire 2058

For the first time in three decades, Best Buy has a new logo. The electronics store launched its new-look logo Wednesday to make it "more modern and easier to read, especially in today's digital world.""The updated logo is true to our heritage, but it's really cleaned up," said Best Buy chief marketing officer Whit Alexander, in a statement. "It's an evolution toward the future, and we're excited about that."The redesigned Best Buy logo still features a yellow tag, but the words "Best Buy" have been pulled out of the tag, and the tag has been shrunk. The new logo is already in use on the Best Buy website and Twitter account.
