LA JOLLA, Calif. (AP) — The X Prize Foundation is developing a contest for technology that can detect and extinguish wildfires before they grow too large.X Prize Foundation chairman Peter Diamandis made the announcement Friday at the Near Future Summit in La Jolla, California. Diamandis says it will take about 100 days to develop the rules for the contest. After that, the foundation will try to find a sponsor and launch the competition.Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom joined Diamandis on stage for the announcement. California has experienced its deadliest and most destructive wildfires in history in the past two years.Newsom has solicited proposals from academics, private companies and entrepreneurs for innovative ways to address California's wildfire problem. The state hopes to test products in the field this upcoming fire season. If a group comes up with an idea worthy of addressing the state's wildfire problems, they could receive anywhere from million to million in prize money. 1006

KANSAS CITY, Missouri — The Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri says it is seeing a disturbing trend in child sexual assault cases.Children are abusing children."I think that was kind of shocking to us all as we were collecting this data, is that almost half of our perpetrators are minors," said Heidi Olson, the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Coordinator. The SANE program's data shows perpetrators are likely to be between 11- and 15-years-old."Another thing we're noticing is a lot of those sexual assaults are violent sexual assaults, so they include physical violence in addition to sexual violence," said Jennifer Hansen, a child abuse pediatrician at Children's Mercy.Recently, the International Association of Forensic Nurses said the hospital is in the top five percent in the United States, which includes hospitals that see adults, in the volume of sexual assault victims they see.Last year, Children's Mercy saw 444 kids who were sexually abused within the last five days. That number rounds out to around 1,000 a year when they include the children who report sexual assault after five days.Victims are most likely girls around 4- to 8-years-old.Hansen and Olson say the number each year continues to rise. They can't pinpoint for sure if it's because Children's Mercy is a recognized children's facility with the capacity to serve more people, or if more children are reporting the assault now than in years past."To sexually assault someone else, that's a learned behavior," Olson said.Nurses are also finding more and more that pornography is playing a role in these cases. That can include a victim being forced to see porn, a victim reporting that the perpetrator said they'd watched porn, being forced to do something shown in a pornographic video, or a victim being recorded doing a sexual act.Hansen and Olson say they're noticing kids are being exposed to porn at very young ages, around 4- or 5-years-old. They say a child can develop unrealistic and dangerous ideas about intimate relationships by being exposed to violent, graphic porn."We know that it's probably multi-factorial. I think there are lots of things that contribute to this, but that is the question; How are we, as a society, failing in such a way that we have 11, 12, and 14-year-old boys, primarily, committing violent sexual assaults?" Hansen said.SANE nurses can't always identify who a perpetrator is, because they work with victims, but said they've had young perpetrators tell them they've watched pornography and acted it out on someone else. 2592

KENOSHA, Wis. — In an open letter, Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers asked President Donald Trump to reconsider his planned visit to Kenosha on Tuesday."I am concerned your presence will only hinder our healing," Evers wrote in the letter on Sunday. "...an in-person visit from you will require a massive re-direction of these resources to support your visit at a time when it is critical that we continue to remain focused on keeping the people of Kenosha safe and supporting the community's response."In response, the White House said that Trump's visit would continue as scheduled."The White House has been humbled by the outreach of individuals from Kenosha who have welcomed the President's visit and are longing for leadership to support local law enforcement and businesses that have been vandalized," White House spokesperson Judd Deere wrote in a statement. "President Trump looks forward to visiting on Tuesday and helping this great city heal and rebuild."During a press conference on Monday, City of Kenosha Mayor John Antaramian was also against Trump visiting. “We want everything to calm down. We want to give people an opportunity to talk before the president comes into town.”It's been one week since Jacob Blake was shot seven times in the back by Kenosha Police Officer Rusten Sheskey. Days of protests, looting, and fires followed. During unrest last Tuesday night, investigators believe 17-year-old Kyle Rittenhouse traveled more than a dozen miles to the city and later shot and killed two people and injured a third."People are scared, people are tense," said Kenosha resident Austin Kitchens.Later on Sunday, several Kenosha County supervisors also wrote a letter to Trump, countering the governor and asking the President not to cancel his plans to visit."Kenoshans are hurting and looking for leadership, and your leadership in this time of crisis is greatly appreciated by those devastated by the violence in Kenosha," the letter reads. Seven supervisors, including Zach Rodriguez, Gabe Nudo, Amy Maurer, Jeff Wamboldt, Mark Nordigian, Erin Decker, and Lon Wienke, signed it.Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul, a Democrat, also tweeted that the President should rethink his visit. Kaul is leading the investigation into the shooting of Jacob Blake.Other Democrats agree with the governor."There are a number of ways the President can help if wants to be helpful, but ultimately divisive rhetoric at this time will not help our community heal and grieve," State Rep. Tip McGuire, D-Kenosha, said. Some people in Kenosha said they do not want the President to visit. Others, like Ruth Simon, say that while they are worried that tensions will flare again, she's excited for the President to be in Kenosha."Because he's done a lot, I feel he's done a lot for us," Simon said.Republicans in Wisconsin believe the President is visiting at the right time and that his presence will show leadership."I reached out to the President on Tuesday, and he said he would provide additional resources to the city of Kenosha, those were essential to get in," Rep. Bryan Steil, R-Wisconsin, said. "Many men and women stood up to help provide that public safety in Kenosha, and the President is coming to say thank you."Steil said he would be in Kenosha with the President on Tuesday, and it will give him a chance to talk about how the city can move forward."We've now established public safety in the city of Kenosha, we now begin the healing process, and the rebuilding process, and I think it's a great opportunity to have that conversation with the President," Steil said. This story was originally published by Stephanie Haines on WTMJ in Milwaukee. 3665

KOHLER, Wis. – Two major golf tournaments have been postponed due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The PGA announced Wednesday that the Ryder Cup has been rescheduled for September 21-26, 2021 at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wisconsin. It was originally scheduled for September 22-27 of this year. The Ryder Cup is a biennial men's golf competition between teams from Europe and the U.S., which began in 1927.Likewise, the Presidents Cup, initially slated for September 30-October 3, 2021, at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, will now be played September 19-25, 2022.The decision to reschedule the Ryder Cup was based on guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and in conjunction with the state and local health officials.“Unlike other major sporting events that are played in existing stadiums, we had to make a decision now about building facilities to host the 2020 Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits,” said PGA of America CEO Seth Waugh. “It became clear that as of today, our medical experts and the public authorities in Wisconsin could not give us certainty that conducting an event responsibly with thousands of spectators in September would be possible. Given that uncertainty, we knew rescheduling was the right call. We are grateful to PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan and our partners at the TOUR for their flexibility and generosity in the complex task of shifting the global golf calendar. With the decision to play the Ryder Cup in 2021, all subsequent Ryder Cups after Whistling Straits will also shift to odd years: 2023/Marco Simone Golf and Country Club (Rome, Italy); 2025/Bethpage Black (Farmingdale, New York); 2027/Adare Manor (County Limerick, Ireland); 2029/Hazeltine National Golf Club (Chaska, Minnesota); 2031/Europe (to be determined); 2033/The Olympic Club (San Francisco); 2035/Europe (to be determined); 2037/Congressional Country Club (Bethesda, Maryland).Additionally, as a result of the Presidents Cup date change, the Wells Fargo Championship will be played at its traditional venue at Quail Hollow Club in 2021, at TPC Potomac in 2022 during the Presidents Cup year and will return to Quail Hollow in 2023. Presidents Cup 2022 qualifying will be determined at a later date.Tickets purchased for the 2020 Ryder Cup via rydercup.com will be automatically valid for the corresponding day(s) in 2021. In the coming weeks, the PGA of America will contact those who secured tickets via rydercup.com to facilitate refunds for those unable to attend in 2021.Those who have purchased tickets and hospitality packages on the secondary market must contact that specific site directly. The PGA of America will be unable to process refunds for those purchases. 2727

KENOSHA, Wis. – From famous athletes to everyday Americans, people across the country are making their voice heard regarding police brutality.“I’m hurt inside, honestly, and there’s only so much a person can take until that hurt turns into anger,” said Alicia Zamora.Art is how Zamora lets out her pain. In Kenosha, Wisconsin, she’s stenciled in Jacob Blake’s name into a mural on a boarded-up convenience store that she and her sister worked on for three days.“I think a lot of people struggle with trying to do something that makes a big impact on the situation that’s going on. For us, that’s painting and drawing for other people it’s protesting,” said Zamora. The situation she’s talking about is the shooting of Jacob Blake by a Kenosha police officer. While Zamora painted, some big-time basketball stars have been protesting. After Blake was shot by a police officer, Zamora turned to art.Others, including some big-time basketball stars, decided to protest.“Over the last few days in our home state of Wisconsin, we saw the horrific video of Jacob Blake shot in the back seven times in Kenosha. Despite the overwhelming plea for change, there has been no action. So, our focus today cannot be on basketball,” said Sterling Brown, a player on the Milwaukee Bucks.Last week, the Bucks refused to take the court for a playoff game. That started a domino effect that canceled all NBA games for three days, sparked protests in the WNBA, Major League Baseball, the National Hockey League, and Major League Soccer.“That it came at the very last second when all the television cameras were trained on the floor expecting there to be a game, made it that much more powerful,” said Kevin Blackistone a professor of journalism at the University of Maryland and a columnist for the Washington Post.He says athletes have a platform that extends beyond the court and they’re going to use it to speak to Americans. They're using that platform to reach fans at a critical time in history.“They can’t turn away from sports, what happens in sports. And in this case, when they tried to turn away from it, it wound up leading local news,” said Blackistone. At least in Kenosha, many residents are paying attention to what athletes have to say, although their reactions differ.“I think it’s like really telling when you’re telling some Black people to shut up and play a game. You know, where you’re like, ‘Shut up, don’t talk about politics, don’t have an opinion, just shut up and play the game. We pay you enough where you don’t have to have an opinion about all this,’” said a protester named Kevin who wouldn't give us his last name.“I’m disappointed in it. I’ve just become less and less of a fan,” said Alan Eries, who was at the protest supporting President Donald Trump.“They’re people of color, they’ve grown up in these communities. A Milwaukee Bucks player got hassled by the police a while back,” said Kevin. When players did finally return to the fields, the ice and the hardwood, many kept their message strong.“Imagine losing a father, losing their life, while they have kids. Imagine a father, son, brother getting shot seven times in front of their kids. Imagine that. We’ve been fighting this fight for a long time and we’re tired of being tired,” said Jamal Murray, a player on the Denver Nuggets.Tired of how long Black Americans have been asking for fairness and justice.“What is it? Friday marked the 57th year since Dr. King walked down the same bridge in Washington, gave his speech. So, we’re still here, 57 years later on the same problem, which is insane,” said Zamora. For Zamora and those in Kenosha fighting for justice, the words of athletes might not be the most pressing issue, but the voices of professional athletes do matter, just like the voices on the ground.“Anything that we can do to show we are supportive, that’s pretty much what we’re doing. It takes something very small to make a big impact on a community,” said Zamora.Like a mural, outside of a boarded-up convenience store. 4015
