SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The City of San Diego Public Utilities department has spend almost 8 million since 2013 to repair and replace 116 miles of water transmission and distribution pipes as part of a program to upgrade it's aging water system, according to documents given to 10News.Most of those repairs (72 miles) were on cast iron pipes, the oldest ones in the system."We have more than 3,000 miles of pipeline," said department spokesperson Brent Eidson, "To do it properly, we're probably always going to be replacing pipes."The project began in 2007 with a rate increase to pay for the work. As older pipes have been replaced, city officials say the number of water main breaks has decreased.The Public Utilities Department gave 10News the following numbers about the amount of breaks over the past 6 years:2012: 1022013: 952014: 742015: 632016: 852017: 66 (as of October 20)"We know we're not going to stop every break," said Eidson. "But if you look at our track record and our pace of replacement, we've seen a significant decline in the number of breaks that we've had."The project replaces aging pipes made out of cast iron or concrete with new PVC pipes. Eidson said that's the industry standard and they have a life expectancy of 50-75 years. He says economics and budgeting led to delays in the older pipes not being replaced sooner.That changed when the rate increase was approved. Now the goal is to replace 30 miles per year.The city says its water system extends over 400 square miles and moves approximately 172 million gallons per day. It includes 49 water pump stations, 29 treated water storage facilities, three water treatment plants and more than 3,300 miles of pipelines.Through the replacement project, the department hopes to have all of the cast iron distribution lines (6-12 inches) replaced by 2018-19. Their goal for the larger cast iron transmission mains (16 inches or bigger) should be finished by 2023.Right now, they say there are still about 46 miles of cast iron pipes in the system, some of them almost 100 years old.Once the cast iron lines are replaced, they'll shift the focus to the older concrete lines."I look at it like painting the Golden Gate Bridge," said Eidson. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The California Department of Public Health is warning the public after a recall was issued for nearly 50,000 pounds of sausage products due to contamination.According to the department, the products may contain pieces of white, hard plastic. Eddy Packaging Co. Inc. recalled the smoked sausage products due to the contamination.The products were sold at Walmart stores in San Diego, Chula Vista, National City, Oceanside, Poway, Santee and La Mesa.The products being recalled have the establishment number "EST. 4800" inside the USDA mark of inspection. The products were also shipped to food service and retail locations in Georgia, Illinois, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. So far, there have been no reports of illness due to the products. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The coronavirus pandemic is preventing many seniors in skilled nursing facilities from seeing their families. UC San Diego students are working to help combat their loneliness with their Sunshine 4 Seniors project. Students would spend their weekends visiting seniors as part of a volunteer project before classes were canceled at UC San Diego. The pandemic halted their visits. "We came up with this project, which was creating cards for seniors at St. Paul Senior Services," says student Olivia Michael. The goal of the project is for students to "step in and fill the loneliness and isolation that the senior citizen communities are feeling, especially during this pandemic," says Morgan Montoya. The students say loneliness in seniors can have damaging effects on the brain. "Olivia and I are near-cognitive science majors," says Montoya. "Our majors really helped us to understand the problems that loneliness poses. With senior citizens having an abundance of isolation and loneliness, it can actually deregulate the brain and cause a progression of Alzheimer's or depression."The Sunshine 4 Seniors project launched nearly a month ago. So far, more than 200 cards have been sent to seniors in skilled nursing facilities. The students say there are thousands of seniors who are not allowed to see their loved ones during this time. They hope to spread some sunshine to as many seniors as they can. "The goal is just to get as many people writing cards as possible," says Michael. "Any means that you have to do it, I just encourage you to get started." 1586
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The FBI said a bank robber who held up a US Bank in Rolando last week struck again Friday in La Mesa. Surveillance photos show a man entering the Wells Fargo Bank inside the Vons grocery store at 8011 University Ave. in La Mesa just before noon. The man pretended to talk on his phone before demanding money from the teller, agents said. He also threatened “to shoot” if he didn’t receive money, according to the FBI. After approaching the first counter, the man approached several tellers in an effort to get more cash, said investigators. The man spoke to tellers Aug. 15 during the US Bank robbery inside the Vons at 6155 El Cajon Blvd. “Grab a bag. Start with your 100s. Put all the money in the bag and give it to me or I'm gonna [sic] shoot,” the man said, according to agents. A helicopter searched the area near the Wells Fargo Friday afternoon but could not find the man. La Mesa Police said the man is 5’8”, in his mid-20s to early 30s, and has a tattoo of a cross on his forearm. Anyone with information about the robberies was asked to call the FBI. 1088
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The next great food craze could come from the waters of the San Diego Bay. A pair of scientists is planting a seaweed farm in the bay, to test the plant's marketability for use as food, animal feed, fertilizer, and bio-fuel."Kelp is the new kale," says Torre Polizzi, one of the owners of Sunken Seaweed.Polizzi and his partner Leslie Booher just got a 7,000 grant from the Port of San Diego to start a test-farm in the bay.
