SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It’s a great time to buy a used car. “These deals are once in a lifetime,” said Ivan Drury, a used car expert with Edmunds. Amid the uncertainty caused by the coronavirus pandemic, used car prices have been decreasing. According to Bloomberg News, the average price of a used car fell 11.4% from March to April. Drury predicts those prices could continue to fall, as desperate rental car companies start to offload unused inventory. Hertz, which filed for bankruptcy on Friday, has a fleet of about 500,000 vehicles. It’s unclear what their plan is for them, but Drury suspects they will only keep enough to maintain a basic level of service. “That influx of used vehicles will have a dramatic impact on price,” he said. Adding to the supply of used cars, Drury predicts that some drivers who have leased cars will hold on to them for a few more months rather than trade them in. But in several months to a year, he expects that could lead to another flood of used vehicles. “You kind of have a perfect storm for used car values to drop even further,” said Drury. 1090

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It all started when La Jolla Shores resident, Penne Horn, had a birthday coming up."It started as a joke. My son asked what I wanted for my birthday and without any thought the words flew out of my mouth 'I want an ice cream maker,'" Horn said. The rest you could say is history.Since the day she received her wishlist item, she like many of us, spent time indoors with her new addition. "I started making ice cream. I just had too much of it and thought there's gotta be something I can do with this," Horn described. So she began to give it away to neighbors. It was so good that nearby residents with a sweet tooth wanted more and insisted on paying her, when a light a bulb went off. "I was hearing stories of families who got dogs in beginning of COVID, then lost their job and couldn't feed family let alone their dogs. I thought I will make the ice cream and ask people for donations. They'll donate and I'll buy dog food, and take it down to St. James church where they'll distribute it." Then new ideas kept getting added to the mix."One lady came to me and said I'll donate whatever if you make an ice cream named after my dog." Then, Twoee's Howling Good Ice Cream was born, named after her own sweet furry companion. "I draw all these different characters of dogs and name the ice cream after their dog."Horn's a former member of the Scripps and Humane Society boards, and she's always given back to the community. "It's part of my life, it's part of who I am."This time around, her community service was something new, a bit more sweet and born out of a pandemic. "There's a little silver lining if you look for it, I never would've started this if it hadn't been for the pandemic. There's good in everything." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — If you're trying to find a precious ticket to San Diego Comic-Con this summer, watch out for villainous scammers scalping fake badges.The Better Business Bureau has issued a warning that third-party sellers may sell fake badges."For consecutive years now, Comic-Con International has sold out in record time and obtaining a badge has become strenuous," the BBB writes. "One of the most pervasive scams BBB has found over the years is the reselling scam in which a scammer claims they bought a badge but can no longer attend the convention."MAP: Where to find you favorite Comic-Con exhibitsScammers may offer their fake badge, tricking customers into thinking they can change the name on their badge to theirs. But they can't and Comic-Con doesn't allow legitimate badge holders to do so."A key factor for consumers to remember is Comic-Con provides a refund at the buyer’s request, making it unnecessary to resell a ticket," BBB adds.The BBB says another common scam with SDCC badges is scammers sell "extra tickets." Comic-Con badgeholders are limited to one ticket each, so third-party sellers can't have extra badges to sell. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It's not often you hear about a bird being rescued from a tree. That's a task San Diego Fire-Rescue was up to in Mission Bay Thursday. Around 12:30 p.m. County Animal Services called for special service when they found an owl entangled in a tree. In a Facebook post SDFR wrote that the owl was caught in fishing line, leaving it suspended from the branches of the tree near 1775 E. Mission Bay Drive. The Engine 20 crew used a ladder to get to the bird and help set it free.  533

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Memorial Day Weekend kicked off Friday night on the USS Midway. As a part of their Legacy Week, they had their annual benefit concert. This year, Daughtry took the stage. Kevin Beam is a big fan and made sure to buy his tickets early, “you got Memorial Day Weekend, Daughtry and beautiful San Diego”. People filled the top deck of the Midway. Ahead of the concert, the USS Midway Foundation presented three ,800 checks to different local charities. The night served as a way for people to remember and honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Penny Erickson was especially grateful for the event Friday, “I’m from a military family my dad was from Pearl Harbor so it means a lot to me.” Chuck Erickson is a volunteer for the USS Midway and a veteran. Friday night, he tells 10News he’s making sure he is grateful all weekend long, “a lot of people lost their lives giving us the freedom we have today”.
