Beijing's municipal authorities have called for grassroots prevention efforts, with hotlines opened for the public to supervise epidemic control work, according to a meeting on controlling the epidemic chaired by Beijing Party Secretary Cai Qi on Friday night.

Beijing will also support the construction of Xiongan New Area, a new economic zone in Hebei province about 100 kilometers Southwest of Beijing. China announced plans for its establishment last April. It is expected to facilitate integrated regional development.

Beijing issued an orange alert last Friday for air pollution, advising children and the elderly to stay indoors and for certain construction activities to be suspended and heavy vehicles to be removed from the road.

Beijing has raised the  basic retirement pension by 5 percent to around 4,157 yuan (0) per person, which will cover 2.57 million people, said the Beijing Municipal Human Resources and Social Security Bureau on Friday. 

Before Spring Festival in February, the inspection will focus on companies and coal mines with major risks and poor management.
