SHIJIAZHUANG, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- Four Japanese are being investigated in China for having entered a military zone without authorization and illegally videotaped military targets in northern Hebei Province, local state security authorities said Thursday.The state security authorities in Shijiazhuang, capital of Hebei, have taken measures against the four people according to law after receiving a report about their illegal activities.The authorities only gave one name of the four Japanese nationals, Sada Takahashi."Currently, the case is being investigated," the state security authorities in Shijiazhuang said in a statement.No further details were provided.

KUNMING, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- At least 14 people were injured and more than 7,300 houses damaged in an earthquake that jolted Yunnan and Sichuan provinces in southwest China Sunday.The earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale occurred at 8:53 a.m., hitting an area bordering the two provinces.The epicenter, with a depth of about 10 kilometers, was located at 27.1 degrees north latitude and 102.9 degrees longitude, according to the earthquake network center in Sichuan.Thirteen people were injured in the latest earthquake, and 7,354 houses were destroyed in the quake, including 122 houses being toppled, plus road cave-ins in Qiaojia County of Yunnan, according to Zhou Yingbin, deputy head of the county government.Another person was slightly injured in Ningnan County of Sichuan, local officials said, who added that nobody was reported dead or missing in the quake.

BEIJING, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Ministry on Thursday confirmed it had started preparations for President Hu Jintao's visit to the United States early next year, which the ministry said would be profound and far-reaching for bilateral ties."China and the United States have maintained close communications about the visit, which will be very important and will bring far-reaching influence for bilateral relations in new era," spokesman Ma Zhaoxu told a regular press briefing.Although Hu's U.S. visit had long been under discussion, it was the first time that China's foreign ministry confirmed the visit and elaborated on its significance.Ma said both China and the United States would like to see a successful visit that will boost the positive, cooperative and comprehensive China-U.S. relationship in the 21st century.At their meeting on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Toronto in June, U.S. President Barack Obama formally invited Hu to pay a state visit to the United States early next year. SHANGHAI, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- China's intellectual property rights (IPR) authorities Saturday vowed to play a larger role in the global cause of IPR protection while being more responsible to innovators and the public.The State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) Director Tian Lipu made the pledge at a press conference held to recognize the 25th anniversary of Sino-EU cooperation on IPR protection.Tian said that China and the EU, as two major economies with close trade relations, should further co-operate to create a better environment to encourage and protect innovation in the business world.At the event, European Patent Office (EPO) President Benoit Battistelli told Xinhua he was optimistic about the future of IPR protection in China, given the rapid progress being made in the country.Battistelli said relations between the EPO and the SIPO would "continue to be decisive for the successful future development of the patent system on a global level."Commemorations of the anniversary, held at the ongoing Shanghai World Expo, also included a demonstration of a real-world IPR enforcement case in a moot court setting.The EPO started cooperating with China in 1985. The two sides are currently implementing the EU-China IPR2 project utilizing a 16 million Euros budget that runs over four years to 2011.Both the EPO and the SIPO are among the world's five largest patent offices, together with the Japan Patent Office, the Korean IP Office, and the United States Patent and Trademark Office.China has also grown into one of the most important non-EU countries filing patent applications to the EPO, with the number of patents submitted increasing from 163 in 2000 to 1,621 in 2009.

No violence or security issues were reported.Zhang Chunxian, the top official in Xinjiang, said holding the China-Eurasia Expo would help remake Xinjiang as a key region for China' s opening-up to its western neighbors.Ying Qian, an expert on regional cooperation with Manila-based Asian Development Bank, told Xinhua that the central government's policy supports for Xinjiang, such as taxation reform for crude oil and natural gas, and tax exemptions and reductions for enterprises in poverty areas, and increased fixed investment will undoubtedly increase the speed of economic growth and attract more domestic and foreign investments to Xinjiang.He said those fixed investments aimed at enhancing Xinjiang's position as the land bridge to connect rest of China to central Asia and beyond will yield most economic benefits for Xinjiang, as well as for rest of member countries of the ADB-supported Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) Program.The program, initiated in 1997 to encourage regional cooperation, includes Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, China (focusing on Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region), Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Mongolia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.The ADB economist said the investments should include key transport links, trade logistics facilities, and most importantly, border crossing points improvements."The CAREC countries need to turn their landlocked status into a land link for Eurasia, and to enable businesses to more readily access regional and global markets," said Ronald Butiong, the ADB economist who heads the CAREC Unit.
