GUANGZHOU, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- Police conducted a hostage rescue drill on Sunday in south China's Guangzhou City as authorities beefed up security about one month prior to the opening of the 2010 Asian Games.Police first practiced rescue operation simulating the bus hostage crisis in the Philippine capital about two months ago. Eight Hong Kong tourists were slain during an ill-prepared rescue by the Philippine police against a lone gunman who hijacked a tourist bus in Manila on Aug. 23.Police officers were not told of the time and location of the drill in advance to test the emergency response of the city's police forces, a senior police officer said.During the drill, a group of armed men "hijacked" a bus carrying athletes and gunned down security guards on their way out of the Asian Games Village. After "negotiations" failed, police quickly broke into the bus and seized the attackers.The second part of the drill involved in rescuing "hijacked" foreign athletes in a room in the Village.After finding the hijackers attempted to kill the hostages, the police stormed the room, overwhelming the attackers and freeing the hostages.Chinese authorities have activated over one hundred checkpoints on the roads and waterways linking areas to the hosting cities of the Games on Sunday.A total of 132 checkpoints, scattered in Guangdong Province and five neighboring regions, are responsible for screening people, vehicles and goods, officials with the Ministry of Public Security said.The 2010 Asian Games is scheduled to open on Nov. 12. The events will be held in four cities in Guangdong.

HANOI, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Friday made proposals for boosting cooperation, especially in economy and trade, at a series of ongoing summits between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and its partners including China, Japan and South Korea.He attended the China-ASEAN summit, the summit of ASEAN Plus Three, namely China, Japan and South Korea, and a meeting of the leaders of the three countries.Wen also held bilateral talks with Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the sidelines.CHINA-ASEAN COOPERATIONWen and other leaders at the 13th summit between China and the ASEAN voiced their commitment to further strengthening their strategic partnership and comprehensive cooperation.Wen made a six-point proposal to further enhance the strategic partnership between China and Southeast Asian nations, saying the cooperation has been "most pragmatic, most extensive and most fruitful.""We should continue to pursue peaceful development through friendly cooperation" and must work together to ensure that "the China-ASEAN cooperation stay at the forefront of East Asian cooperation," Wen said.Topping the list of priorities is the further promotion of economic and trade relations between the two sides, Wen said.Wen said China will further expand imports from and facilitate trade with ASEAN members in the coming years in the hope of bringing the annual bilateral trade value to 500 billion U.S. dollars by 2015.ASEAN PLUS THREE SUMMITAt the ASEAN Plus Three summit involving ASEAN and China, Japan and South Korea, Wen proposed that they speed up work on establishing the East Asia Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and boost cooperation in finance and other areas."Stronger ASEAN Plus Three cooperation is essential to the revitalization of East Asia," Wen said at the summit.On the East Asia FTA, Wen said China, as the lead sherpa of the ASEAN Plus Three business cooperation, has put forward the roadmap for ASEAN Plus Three trade facilitation for the next five years."China will consult with other parties and propose specific measures to further advance trade and investment liberalization and facilitation within the region," he said.With China, Japan and South Korea each having their respective FTAs with the ASEAN in place, the three countries should move faster towards the establishment of a free trade agreement, Wen said.China, Japan and South Korea have decided to sign a tripartite investment agreement as soon as possible and complete the joint FTA study involving the government, industry, and academia by 2012, he said.Wen also called for efforts to deepen financial cooperation, saying that the two sides should make the Chiang Mai Initiative Multilateralization more effective and improve its operation procedures.Meanwhile, those countries should probe ways to encourage cross-border bond transaction and settlement in the region, and intensify the capacity-building for the development of the bond market, he said.The premier also called for promoting cooperation in food security, agriculture, infrastructure construction and education.On food security, Wen said China stands ready to join efforts with all other parties to build the ASEAN Plus Three Emergency Rice Reserve. BEIJING, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang said Tuesday that China would coordinate its national family planning policy, stabilizing an appropriately low birth rate and improving the quality of its population."The fact remains that China has a large population. The issue of population is always a major issue for China's social and economic development," said Li at a seminar marking the 30th anniversary of the Family Planning Association of China in Beijing.The government must solve the issue in a way that takes into consideration the whole picture of China's long-term social and economic development, he said.Chinese government statistics show China's population stood at 1.32 billion at the end of 2008, which was about 2.5 times the number in 1949 when the People's Republic of China was founded.The Chinese government adopted a family planning policy in the late 1970s which basically permits most urban households to have only one child.The policy had helped China's total population increase less than 40 percent between 1978 and 2008, whereas it nearly doubled between 1949 and 1978.Li said the government would make efforts to improve the quality of the population, optimize the population structure and spur the rational distribution of the people, so as to turn the pressure of the population into an advantage of human resources.He also said the government would launch measures to narrow the widening ratio of men to women and address problems arising with an aging population.The population aged at or above 60-years-old will top 200 million by the end of 2015, government reports showed.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- China's growth is projected to average 10.5 percent in 2010 and 9.6 percent in 2011, driven by domestic demand, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said in a report Wednesday.The Washington-based international lending agency made the projection for the annual fall meetings this weekend of the 187-nation IMF and its sister lending organization, the World Bank."The slight moderation in recent activity is expected to continue through 2011 in light of tighter quantitative limits on credit growth, measures to cool off the property market and limit bank exposure to this, and the planned unwinding of fiscal stimulus in 2011," the IMF said in its report.The report said this year's sustained growth in retail sales and industrial production confirms that private sector activity has advanced beyond the lift from government stimulus."On average over 2010-11, private domestic demand is poised to contribute two-thirds of near term growth, and government activity about one third, whereas the contribution from net exports will be close to zero," the report said.Despite the robustness in domestic demand, the pickup in inflation in 2010 reflected mainly higher food prices rather than core inflation, the report said.The report said China's increasingly wide trading network is driving growth in numerous economies, especially commodity exporters.The report said Asia's medium-term growth depends on the rebalancing of drivers of growth -- greater reliance should be put on domestic markets instead of foreign demand.The report said such a rebalancing in China, the world's second largest economy, is critical to enhance the role of household consumption in domestic growth.The report also recommended that China implement reforms to health care, education, and pension systems to enhance the social safety net.
